Open Thread | I Know It’s Too Much Too Hope….That the MSM Stops Trying to Pretend That The GOP Is An Actual Political Party

I want people to never forget this.

George Bush and his Administration lied us into not one, but, TWO WARS.

And, even he, couldn’t get Comprehensive Immigration Reform passed.

Why, you may ask?

Because, Republicans don’t actually WANT immigration reform. If we had actual Immigration Reform, then how could they use the immigration issue to fear monger and peddle in White Supremacy?

The top issue for Iowa Caucus voters was Immigration.

Immigration.

For a state, in the Midwest, over 1500 miles from our Southern Border (don’t kid yourself, they don’t give a rat’s ass about the border with Canada)
For a state that is 90+% WHITE
For a state whose population is 96% U. S. Citizen

THIS state had IMMIGRATION as it’s top concern?

Lips so pursed. Eyes rolling.

So, remember that, when you read things like this:

So, the Senate does all the work to get a bill together that:
Funds the border
More Security for the Border
Funds for Ukraine
Funds for Israel

But, the right-wing clowns in the House refuse to bring it to a vote.

OWN IT MIKE
Why Mike Johnson Is Having a MAGA Meltdown Over the Border Deal
The House speaker is afraid that if the Senate bill passes, the GOP will partially own the border crisis. He—and Trump—also fear the bill will work.

Because Republicans are so profoundly concerned about the border, the House GOP leadership’s first response to the new Senate border security deal was to declare that the House will never even vote on it. Why? Because if it did, the bill would pass the House on a comfortable bipartisan basis, and for Republicans, that is an unacceptable outcome.

House Speaker Mike Johnson’s reaction to the announcement of a deal late Sunday from a bipartisan group of senators was particularly telling. The bill, Johnson said, is “dead on arrival” in the House, because it “won’t come close to ending the border catastrophe the president has created.”

In saying this, Johnson exposed the real GOP calculation: If the bill passes, Biden might no longer fully own what happens at the border. Republicans will have participated in passing a solution, making it harder for them to blame Biden for it. That’s plainly why Donald Trump keeps urging Republicans to kill the bill.

The bill would, in fact, do a great deal that Republicans say they want. It would make it significantly harder to qualify for asylum, and it would channel major new expenditures into border security, expanded detention of migrants, and expedited processing of asylum claims, reducing backlogs in migrant processing—including faster removals of those who don’t qualify.

The Senate bill—negotiated by Republican James Lankford, independent Kyrsten Sinema, and Democrat Chris Murphy—would also create a new authority for the president to effectively shut down asylum seeking entirely once encounters with migrants hit an average of 4,000 per day. At 5,000, it would mandate this.

Trump and his allies are pretend-raging that the deal would “allow” 5,000 migrants to illegally enter daily. In fact, that number refers to encounters with migrants, meaning they’re put into the system where their claims are adjudicated. While many do get released while they await hearings, the law requires that those picked up on U.S. soil receive an asylum hearing if sought. Courts are badly backlogged, and detaining all migrants is logistically impossible, requiring enormous expenditures that the public would never tolerate.

That’s why every president releases a lot of migrants—including Trump, who released hundreds of thousands of them. True, the bill would not reinstate his policy of forcing migrants to await hearings in Mexico or basically end asylum seeking entirely, as the House GOP approach would. But this is what makes the deal a compromise.

This took my breath away. @Heritage president flips the narrative and says “They’re leveraging the border crisis and the needs of our allies in Israel and Taiwan to extract more than $60 billion in additional unaccountable aid for Ukraine.”
This weird bill was THEIR IDEA

This lie is already gaining momentum on the right. Challenge it every time you hear it. The GOP were the ones who demanded the aid package be tied to the border…back when they allegedly cared about the border. They did this. This was their plan.

About Tracy Chapman at the Grammys, and how moved she seemed at the beginning of her performance in response to the cheers she heard from the crowd.

I think that she never grasped how deeply she touched us all those years ago. How her music pierced our souls and never left.

It’s sort of not comparable, but sort of is….Hayden Christensen – who played Anakin Skywalker, and was villified when he was actually doing the movies, is now doing work on Disney+ Star Wars material. They brought him out, at a fan appearance, and the crowd went CRAZY. I mean, an ovation for MINUTES. He was stunned to tears. As someone wrote in post I saw on this, ” We were kids, so, our voices couldn’t be heard. But, you were always OUR Anakin. Now that we are adults, we can tell you how much you were always loved. ”

Tracy touched our soul. For an entire generation, her music wasn’t flashy, but, it spoke to us. We thought that we loved her. We thought that she knew that. Seeing her on that stage, both of us -realized just how much she touched us. Chapman was 24 when she wrote that song. She will be 60 this year.
The song means something completely different to those of us who were young, and now that we’re older. That’s also why WE were overwhelmed when we saw her.

Opinion The GOP dog caught the car. Again.

Welp, the dog caught the car again. After months — decades? — of running on tightening the border, House Republicans are suddenly paralyzed when offered the chance to do so.

A hard-won, bipartisan Senate deal dropped Sunday evening, with tons of items on conservatives’ border-policy bucket list, including many that former president Donald Trump had begged for. These include:

beefing up border security as a condition for giving any more aid to Ukraine (check!)
a tougher and faster asylum-processing system so that those who don’t meet asylum criteria cannot stay and work for years while their cases crawl through the courts (check!)
hiring more personnel for Customs and Border Protection as well as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (1,500 and 1,200, respectively — so, check, check!)
huge investments in fentanyl detection technologies and other anti-trafficking enforcement (check!)
reviving something like Title 42 restrictions, wherein the president can “shut down” most of the asylum system (though this version doesn’t require a public health pretext and has more severe consequences for border-crossers — so, check-plus, perhaps).
House Republicans should have been pinching themselves in disbelief. Yet within hours of this 370-page bill dropping, House GOP leaders ruled out letting their chamber vote on any of it.
