Coloradoan Ed Dwight Makes History Again With Space Flight

He was supposed to be America’s first Black Astronaut…but….you know…racism…..

Yet a dream deferred turned out not to be a dream denied.

Honoring The Man Who Could’ve Been The First African-American In Space

Ed Dwight, a Denver-based sculptor who earlier in his life was America’s first Black astronaut candidate, finally rocketed into space 60 years later, flying with Jeff Bezos’ rocket company on Sunday.

Dwight was an Air Force pilot when President John F. Kennedy championed him as a candidate for NASA’s early astronaut corps. But he wasn’t picked for the 1963 class.

After that near-miss, Dwight pursued several careers before breaking out as a sculptor. His works, both public monuments and gallery pieces, focus on remembering and celebrating Black history and culture. Among his public commissions are the Underground Railroad monument in Battle Creek, Michigan, and a series of sculptures memorializing jazz greats at the St. Louis Arch museum.

On his flight this Sunday, Dwight, now 90, went through a few minutes of weightlessness with five other passengers aboard the Blue Origin capsule as it skimmed space on a roughly 10-minute flight. He called it “a life changing experience.”

Post Watergate, the GOP came within 25k votes in Mississippi and Ohio of winning the electoral college in 1976.

America was gonna reward The GOP with another 4 years and ignore how much a crook Nixon was.

They’ll do the same for Trump.

So there is now a comprehensive ceasefire proposal, backed by the US and approved by Israel, that would see an immediate temporary ceasefire that would progress into a permanent ceasefire and then into the full reconstruction of Gaza. The pressure MUST be on Hamas to agree to it.

Yes. This. The deal would require a full cease-fire & withdrawal of all Israeli forces. No occupation. Release of the hostages. An influx of humanitarian aid, including housing. Unless you can identify a poison pill, here, we should all praise this deal.

This is true. Biden, as far as I can tell, strategically delivered a proposal Israel had approved. Some have posited that the timing was so Netanyahu couldn’t turn around & tank it. But, either way, this was a very big event. Pretty revealing that the American press didn’t…

Do not trust people who demand perfection from the ending of a war. War does not produce good things. The goal, in ending a war, is to minimize harm. People who make the “perfect the enemy of the good” in such cases are either misinformed or malicious.

CNN: Donald Trump is making this 2024 campaign all about him and not about you. That’s precisely what he did at this rambling… don’t even know what to call it, just a venting session before cameras? He was going on and on for 45 minutes. It was surprisingly incoherent, surprisingly all over the place. He was looking kind of like an old man who was just ranting, breathing heavy, in a self involved way. This wasn’t a great outing for him

Two takeaways flow from understanding what polls are truly measuring and how tuned out a high percentage of voters may be. For starters, Biden’s “message” right now largely isn’t heard by disengaged voters. He cannot persuade people who are not listening. Pronouncements about his “messaging” (usual critical) don’t have much value until the people he needs to reach start listening.

Second, the challenge for Democrats will be to reach the disengaged who would normally lean their way. That means social media, nontraditional media (e.g., “The View”), turn-out-the-vote operations and making the most of high-interest events. (The Biden campaign, for example, announced a massive outreach to African American voters for the summer.) Fortunately for the future of our democracy, the Biden side has a real campaign with hundreds, if not thousands, of people on the ground whose job this will be. The Trump team? It has virtually none.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2024/…
