Reconstruction-era opponents of racial equality popularized the charge that protecting civil rights would amount to the end of capitalism.

For years after World War II, the “liberal consensus”—the New Deal idea that the federal government had a role to play in regulating business, providing a basic social safety net, and promoting infrastructure—was a true consensus. It was so widely popular that in 1950, the critic Lionel Trilling wrote of the United States that “liberalism is not only the dominant but even the sole intellectual tradition.”
But the Supreme Court’s 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision declaring segregation in public schools unconstitutional tied the federal government to ensuring not just economic equality, but also civil rights. Opponents of the liberal consensus argued that the newly active federal government was misusing tax dollars taken from hardworking white men to promote civil rights for “undeserving” Black people. The troops President Dwight Eisenhower sent to Little Rock Central High School in 1957, for example, didn’t come cheap. The government’s defense of civil rights redistributed wealth, they said, and so was virtually socialism.

Rather than seeing affirmative action developing out of the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, Katznelson (Desolation and Enlightenment) finds its origins in the New Deal policies of the 1930s and 1940s. And instead of seeing it as a leg up for minorities, Katznelson argues that the prehistory of affirmative action was supported by Southern Democrats who were actually devoted to preserving a strict racial hierarchy, and that the resulting legislation was explicitly designed for the majority: its policies made certain, he argues, that whites received the full benefit of rising prosperity while blacks were deliberately left out. Katznelson supports this startling claim ingeniously, showing, for instance, that while the 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act was a great boon for factory workers, it did nothing for maids and agricultural laborers—employment sectors dominated by blacks at the time—at the behest of Southern politicians. Similarly, Katznelson makes a strong case that the GI Bill, an ostensibly color-blind initiative, unfairly privileged white veterans by turning benefits administration over to local governments, thereby ensuring that Southern blacks would find it nearly impossible to participate. Introduced by Republican Representative Claudia Tenney of a district in Western and Upstate New York that hugs Lake Ontario, the bill has been described by Amnesty International USA Executive Director Paul O’Brien as troubling because it provides no safeguards to prevent it from being misused to harass or intimidate organizations for exercising their rights. “In any other context, this legislation would be seen for what it is, a play from the authoritarian leader’s playbook,” he said in a statement.

Let’s be real—anyone saying Trump didn’t use identity politics is lying. His entire strategy was weaponizing identity to divide people into groups and pit them against one another.
Carville and those who think like him are exactly why we’re failing to connect with Black voters. It’s why 15 million fewer people voted in 2024. Sure, a broken clock is right twice a day, so he sprinkles in just enough facts to seem logical—and mainstream media keeps giving him a platform. Meanwhile, I beat the Democrat he backed in the U.S. Senate race after he called me an idiot.
I don’t hold a grudge against the old man. My issue is with the folks who still listen to him.
At some point, you have to ask: are they Elders, or just Old? Elders offer wisdom and genuinely invest in the next generation. Old people pick favorites and label everyone else as clueless.
This “Carville logic” infects too many consultants, and it’s part of why turnout keeps dropping. Yes, we need a strong economic message, but we also need to embrace the diversity of this nation unapologetically. someone in her comments asked her about the GOP pivoting to try and include Latinos since the Orange Menace got such a good showing from them in 2024.
I disagreed with her response.
You don’t hire Stephen Miller (de-naturalization) and that other creep who said ‘ the entire family can be deported together’ if you’re trying to go after the Latino vote.
She might not remember that George W. Bush got 40% of the Latino vote.
