The recipientâJudge John McConnellâpublicly detailed the threats he has endured in recent months.
âItâs the one time that actually shook my faith in the judicial system and the rule of law,â he said.
At the event, Judge McConnell was joined by several fellow members of the federal judiciaryâmarking a rare instance in which sitting judges publicly addressed the threats and harassment they have faced.
Judge Robert Lasnik said he also received pizzas under the name of Salasâs murdered son.
âTwo of my adult kids, who live in other cities on the West Coast, received pizzas that they did not order, and we received one at our home in Seattle. All three were in the name of Daniel.â
To Judge Lasnik, the message was clear:
âWe know where you live, we know where your children live, and they could end up dead like Judge Salas’s son did. That’s a pretty cruel thing to do,â he said.
Judge John Coughenour, who in February blocked Trumpâs executive order on birthright citizenship, said that he had been âswatted.â
âThe local sheriff’s office received a call saying that I had murdered my wife, and they arrived at my house with weapons drawn,â he said.
Judge Coughenour continued:
âLooking back at what happened in Germany, my good friend Judge Lasnik said, âWhere were the judges? Where were the lawyers?ââ
âWe need a call to action in this country from our lawyers and our judges to say ânot in our country, not on our watch,ââ
Judge Salas also spoke at the event, choking back tears as she reflected on the anniversary of her son Danielâs murder by a man who had previously appeared before her in court.
She described the pain of learning that Danielâs name has now been âweaponizedâ to intimidate others.
Judge Salas called on âpolitical leaders from the top downâ to âstop fanning these flames.â
âStop demonizing us, stop villainizing us, because what they’re doing when they do that irresponsible rhetoric is they are inviting people to do us harm,â she said.
âThe facts are that we have political leaders with large social platformsâpolitical leaders with power, right?âcalling us âderangedâ and âidiots,ââ Judge Salas said.
âThat is the inflammatory rhetoric that I think caused the judges that are on here today to come forward.â

ICE lumps together “pending charges” with convictions because ICE doesn’t believe in due process. Most of these charges are not serious, not violent, and many would have had those charges dismissed. ICE is charging people with fake assaults that are being dismissed.
