David was born in Holyrood, Southampton, Hampshire,[2] the son of Tina (née Loftus), a retail assistant at Superdrug, and George David, a carpenter.[3][4] David’s father is a Grenadian and David’s mother is an English Jew related to the founders of the Accurist watch-making company; David’s maternal grandfather was an Orthodox Jew and his maternal grandmother a convert to Judaism.[5] David’s parents separated when he was eight and he was raised by his mother.[6] He attended Bellemoor School.
David’s father played bass in a reggae band called Ebony Rockers. As a teen, David began accompanying his father to local dance clubs, where DJs let him take the microphone.

Ohioans Protest GOP’s Opposition To Unemployment Extension At John Boehner’s Office

After Marvin Bohn lost his job running the dining services program at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, it took two years to find a part-time gig. He said even Burger King rejected him when he applied for a job.
He said he got by thanks to $365 a week in unemployment insurance.
“Unemployment benefits pretty much allowed me to pay my rent, maintain my car, gas, pay utilities and buy food. Beyond that, pretty much nothing. There was no luxuries, but it kept me from being homeless,” he told HuffPost on Wednesday.
That’s why he joined a dozen Ohioans in a small protest outside the Troy office of incoming Republican House Speaker John Boehner on Wednesday. Republicans, Bohn said, “seem to think it’s more important to maintain the tax breaks for the rich than it is to get the unemployed benefits.”
Working America, the community-organizing affiliate of the AFL-CIO, organized the protest. They strung up a few hundred job applications and jobs petitions. “Boehner, don’t do us wrong, stop stringing us along,” they chanted. They were greeted by a handful of Boehner fans.
Working America regional director Dan Heck told HuffPost a friendly Boehner staffer accepted thousands of petitions asking Congress to focus on jobs. Working America claims 50,000 unemployed members in Ohio.
The protest focused on the impending Nov. 30 expiration of federally-funded extended jobless aid. If Congress fails to reauthorize the program, two million people will prematurely stop receiving checks by the end of the year, according to the National Employment Law Project.

You get what you vote for. No need to look for a soup line because there won’t be any. No soup line, no unemployment benefits, no food stamps…nada!

A group of Tea Party activists in Washington D.C. recently told two Hispanic Texas border congressmen to “Go back to Mexico” as they were on their way to vote on the House floor.
Hinojosa, D-Mercedes, said he and Congressman Silvestre Reyes, D-El Paso, were confronted by five Tea Party supporters. “There were five men, all white,” Hinojosa said.
“They first asked Silvestre Reyes, ‘Are you a congressman?’ ‘Yes, I’m from Texas,’ he answered. ‘Are you both congressmen?’ ‘Yes, I am a congressman too,’ Hinojosa replied. ‘Why don’t you go back to Mexico?,” they said.

Melissa del Bosque doesn’t mince words about the implications of the Republican Party’s embrace of the Tea Party and its racism.
I put the blame at the feet of Republican conservatives and some Tea Party candidates like Sharron Angle who are throwing fuel on the fire this mid-term election. They don’t give a damn if they spur racial hatred, just as long as they win their elections. Take Angle for instance. She’s running her poisonous campaign ads that portray Latinos as a terrorist horde slinking along the border fence. Even worse is Georgia Republican state Rep. John Yates who advocates for killing people on sight if they cross the border illegally. Yates, who has served decades in Congress, said during a recent campaign forum that the U.S. government should drop flyers over northern Mexico warning they are going to “shoot to kill,” if anyone crosses the border illegally. Yates thinks killing women and children is a perfectly logical public policy proposal. It’s scary stuff, folks.
And of course who can forget Joe Miller’s admiration of the Berlin Wall (which came down 21 years ago today) and for their practice shooting those who tried to climb over that wall. This racism may not be offensive to the old white males from the South who run the Republican Party, but it is offensive to millions of Hispanic voters as Melissa del Bosque points out so eloquently.
Being told to return to Mexico must have been particularly offensive for Congressman Reyes who is a 26 year veteran of the Border Patrol, and served as Sector Chief for the McAllen and El Paso areas.
Pandering to racists may have paid off for the Republican Party in the short term but it is sure to backfire over the long term.

Right Wing Watch’s latest entry in the “Ten Scariest Republicans Heading to Congress” series (how did they pick just 10, I wonder?) is truly blood curdling:
In one of the Tea Party’s biggest victories, Florida’s Allen West defeated incumbent Democrat Ron Klein in a rematch of their 2008 race. West, an Army veteran, became a YouTube sensation by criticizing “this tyrannical government” and crying out: “if you’re here to stand up to get your musket, to fix your bayonet, and to charge into the ranks, you are my brother and sister in this fight.” He said that the country was engaging in “class warfare” between “a producing class and an entitlement class,” which is composed of Obama supporters.
While serving in Iraq, he was forced out of the Army for his violent handling of an investigation of a police officer. During the interrogation, West dragged “him outside, pushed his head into the sand, and fired a gun next to his face to get him to sing.” According to West: “It wasn’t torture. Seeing Rosie O’Donnell naked would be torture.”

West encouraged his supporters to use violence in suppressing the votes of opponents, saying, “You’ve got to make the fellow scared to come out of his house.”
He maintains that it is “unfortunate” that gays and lesbians are serving in the military, and compares homosexuality to adultery. West is also radically anti-choice. On abortion rights, he has said “I believe all future discussion on this issue should move us toward the elimination of abortion except in the most extraordinary of circumstances,” and accused pro-choice groups of “promot[ing] abortion as a means of birth control.”
West wants to eliminate the progressive tax system. He supports tax cuts for the rich, and calls Wall Street Reform a “sham.” He’s advocated for eliminating the Departments of Energy and Education.
On immigration, he claims that illegal immigrants should not have access to care in emergency rooms, and that Muslim terrorists are coming through the border with Mexico. Radio talk show host Joyce Kaufman, who is slated to be West’s chief of staff, called for illegal immigrants to be “hung on the central square.”
A Republican partisan, West said: “I hate big-tent. I hate inclusiveness. And I hate outreach.” West uses extreme rhetoric against Democrats and liberals. He said that liberals resented the fact that he saved the lives of American soldiers. On the anti-Islam blog Atlas Shrugs, he wrote that progressives “detest anyone who has the courage of conviction and love of America, something which they find unconscionable.” In the same post, he wrote, “”Liberals seek to destroy any institution of intrinsic value: God, country, family, honor, valor, courage, VIRTUE… Why? Because if such things exist, then they must be defended, which brings them back to their fear of action.” He also claims that Democratic combat veterans Joe Sestak and Patrick Murphy “hate the military.”
Read on, there’s more much more. In a way, he’s refreshing. He’s letting it all hang out and there’s do doubt about his agenda.
West was touted not long ago as one of the libertarian darlings of the Tea Party (someone even liberals could work with) until the fourteen libertarians among them figured out that he’s a warmonger and a psychopath. The rest of the Tea Party didn’t mind that at all. In fact, it’s what they love about him.
West raised more money than any non-incumbent in a House race, making it the second-most expensive House contest in the country. He received major backing from the Republican Party and its major players — he was named a “Young Gun” by the National Republican Congressional Committee, was endorsed by Sarah Palin, and got a campaign visit from Rep. John Boehner (R-OH), the presumptive Speaker of the House.

Justices Appear Reluctant to Overturn Calif. Ruling Favoring Consumer Class Actions

U.S. Supreme Court justices appear sympathetic to a couple’s bid for class action status in a lawsuit challenging AT&T cell phone charges, according to one account of oral arguments on Tuesday.
“A victory for consumers and class action litigators seemed possible on Tuesday,” the National Law Journal reports. The case has attracted attention because of warnings a ruling against the couple could essentially end class-action litigation in America.
The couple, Vincent and Liza Concepcion, are suing AT&T for advertising free cell phones while charging $30 in taxes and fees. AT&T’s contract requires arbitration of disputes and bans class actions, but federal courts applying a California Supreme Court ruling found those provisions were unconscionable.
Justice Antonin Scalia was among the justices who appeared unwilling to overturn California precedent, according to the NLJ and the New York Times. “Are we going to tell California what it has to consider unconscionable?” Scalia asked.
Justice Sonia Sotomayor expressed similar misgivings. “We have to serve as reviewers of state law?” she asked.
A lawyer for AT&T, Mayer Brown partner Andrew Pincus, argued that the Federal Arbitration Act, which favors dispute resolution through arbitration, pre-empted California contract law. Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and Samuel A. Alito Jr. appeared more sympathetic to his arguments, the Washington Post reports.

“I had made the line of cushion covers for my new range called Mela, the tagline for which is Fun At Home. Since the Obamas are coming to visit India, I felt it is the right time to launch them in the market,” Kalra, who has her own store in Lado Sarai in the capital, told IANS.
The designer is selling a pack of five pillow cases – a set of two cushions, two vertical pillows and a small pocket cushion at Rs.6,500. While the big cushion covers have an imprint of Michelle Obama and reads “First Lady of Fabulous”, the pocket cushion reads “We love her”.
Kalra explains why she chose to represent only Michelle, and not any Indian political icon.

The creators of ‘What The Fuck Has Obama Done So Far,’ a web site that displays various Obama administration accomplishments, stopped by “The Last Word” to talk about their site on Monday night. The web site, which resembles the format of the 2008 hit site — and later book — ‘Barack Obama Is Your New Bicycle,’ was launched last week and has already been viewed by more than four million people, according to Lawrence O’Donnell.
Shavanna Miller, who came up with the idea, says it only took approximately three hours for her and her two friends to put the site together on a Sunday night.
Co-creator Richard Boenigk discussed the thought behind the site: “When we set out to create the site, we weren’t out to convince anybody who wasn’t already a supporter of the president…. When he was elected, I think people dreamed really big, bigger than they probably had in the past. And I think that left a lot of room for disappointment. So this is a site to remind people of the things he has accomplished.”

Cowboys’ Wade Phillips fired

IRVING, Texas — Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said it was time for a culture change at Valley Ranch.
Monday afternoon, Jones fired coach Wade Phillips following a distasteful 45-7 loss to the Green Bay Packers.
An in-season coaching change is not something I’ve done before, something I was reluctant to do as recently as last week,” Jones said. “But I think what’s best for the organization and the fans is a coaching change.”
The Sunday night loss to the Packers forced Jones’ hand to fire Phillips, a man he just gave a two-year contract extension to in 2010 for leading the Cowboys to their first playoff win in over a decade.
Jones will move on with assistant head coach Jason Garrett in the lead role on an interim basis.
We all knew it was coming.

Americans aren’t buying the GOP agenda

In the wake of the election, conservatives are full of advice for President Obama. The “unmistakable message” of the election, says presumptive House Speaker John Boehner, is “change course,” and that begins by cutting spending and lowering taxes. The election, writes a dyspeptic George F. Will, was “nationwide recoil against Barack Obama’s idea of unlimited government.” A rational and alarmed American majority, says Will, believed that “government commands and controls” were “superseding and suffocating the creativity of a market society’s spontaneous order.”
Were voters really unleashing their hidden Friedrich Hayek and Ayn Rand?
It’s true that conservatives, aroused in part by the Tea Party and its opposition to Obama, came out in large numbers – making up more than 40 percent of the electorate last week. The Obama base, probably exhausted – as Velma Hall famously told the president in an October town hall meeting, “of defending you, defending your administration” – turned out in smaller numbers.
But the whiter, older, more conservative electorate last Tuesday remained skeptical of the conservative agenda. On spending, these voters were of mixed minds. Asked in exit polls what the first priority of Congress should be, as many said spending to create jobs (37 percent) as said reducing the deficit (39 percent). On taxes, the conservative position was taken by a distinct minority of Tuesday’s voters, with 39 percent saying Congress should extend the Bush tax cuts to all, while more than half the voters supported extending them only to those with incomes under $250,000 (37 percent) or not extending them all (15 percent).

U.S. Jobless Claims Fell Last Week to Lowest Level Since July

The number of Americans filing initial jobless claims last week fell to the lowest level in four months, reinforcing evidence the U.S. labor market is healing.
Applications for jobless benefits declined by 24,000 to 435,000 in the week ended Nov. 6, lower than the median forecast in a Bloomberg News survey, Labor Department figures showed today in Washington. The total number of people collecting unemployment insurance fell to the lowest level since November 2008, and those receiving extended payments also declined.
Fewer firings are a first step to improvement in the labor market, followed by faster job and income growth that will help fuel gains in consumer spending. Bigger increases in payrolls are also required to bring down an unemployment rate that’s close to 10 percent.
