From the wiki:  Rose Royce is an American soul and R&B band. The group is best known for several hit singles including “Car Wash,” “I Wanna Get Next to You,” “Wishing on A Star”, “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore” and “I’m Going Down“.

The Los Angeles-based group composed of Henry Garner (drums), Terral “Terry” Santiel (congas), Lequeint “Duke” Jobe (bass), Michael Moore (saxophone), Gwen Dickey (lead vocals), Kenny Copeland (trumpet, lead vocals), Kenji Brown (guitar, lead vocals), Freddie Dunn (trumpet), and Michael Nash (keyboards). The group began in the early 1970s, when members of several backup bands from the Watts and Inglewood areas of Los Angeles united under the name Total Concept Unlimited. In 1973, this collective toured England and Japan behind Motown soul star Edwin Starr. Starr introduced them to Norman Whitfield, Motown‘s ‘psychedelic shaman’ who was responsible for bringing a progressive funk-rock slant to the company, via such productions as Starr’s “War“, The Undisputed Truth‘s “Smiling Faces Sometimes” and The Temptations “Papa Was A Rolling Stone”.[1]

  2. Eric Fuller Arrested Over Tea Party Threat: Arizona Shooting Victim In Confrontation With Trent Humphries

A man wounded in last weekend’s shootings in Tucson was arrested today for threats he allegedly made towards a man who expressed support for gun ownership during a taping of an ABC News town hall. AZ Central reports:

The Pima County Sheriff’s Office said it arrested Eric Fuller, 63, who was wounded in the knee a week ago in the shooting rampage that killed six and wounded 13. He was being held Saturday for alleged threats of intimidation and disorderly conduct and will undergo a mental-health evaluation. […] Toward the end of the taping, Amanpour brought up the issues of gun safety and mental health. As one member of the audience stood up and expressed his support for gun ownership, Fuller, seated near the front in an area reserved for victims and special guests, appeared increasingly frustrated and agitated.
Fuller then swiveled in his chair, raised his camera and took a photo of the pro-gun speaker, muttering, “You’re dead,” according to Joel Tranter, who was sitting behind him.

Local Arizona station KGUN reports that the two individuals who set Fuller off were “Ariz. state Rep. Terri Proud, a Dist. 26 Republican, and Tucson Tea Party spokesman Trent Humphries.”

U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords has been taken off a ventilator and is breathing on her own, hospital in Tucson, AZ says.

This is encouraging news. She now has a trach. If she speaks, they could possibly remove the trach. A miracle that Gabby survived this shooting. I get goose bumps everytime I hear how she is progressing. God is good.

Giffords’s breathing tube removed, doctors say

TUCSON – As the grocery store in the Tucson shopping center that was the site of last week’s shooting reopened, doctors on Saturday announced that they had removed Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’s breathing tube
Doctors at Tucson’s University Medical Center said Giffords (D-Ariz.) remained in critical condition and was recovering as planned. A surgical procedure known as a tracheotomy was performed Saturday morning, they said.

The “tracheotomy tube was placed in her windpipe, protecting her airway and freeing her from the ventilator,” according to a statement released from the hospital. Surgeons also inserted a feeding tube to provide nutritional support.

Doctors said these procedures are common among brain-injured patients.

Six people were killed in the shooting last Saturday, and at least a dozen were wounded, including Giffords. One patient was discharged Saturday, authorities said.

At the Safeway grocery store, which reopened at 7 a.m., customers trickled in, a few looking nervously around the area where the shooting happened. A makeshift memorial with flowers as well as red, white and blue ribbons and teddy bears sits in front of the store.

Safeway officials said the store’s 88 employees have come back to work or plan to come back, and the store has provided counseling and other support services. Thirty-one employees were working in the store when the shooting occurred. None of them was hurt.

At 10:11 a.m. Saturday, the time of the shootings, Safeway officials observed a moment of silence to honor those who were killed and injured. Catherine Kloos, a spokeswoman for Safeway, said a memorial in front of the store symbolized what happened there.

Sanders warns Obama not to agree with GOP on Social Security benefit cuts
By Alexander Bolton – 01/14/11 03:24 PM ET
Sen. Bernie Sanders, the Independent from Vermont, is pressing President Obama to keep his campaign promise not to cut Social Security benefits in a possible deal with Republicans.

Sanders has joined a lobbying campaign by more than 200 labor unions and liberal groups pressing Obama to make a strong statement against cutting Social Security benefits in his State of the Union address, scheduled for Jan. 25.

    • GrannyStandingforTruth says:

Sanders is right, they need to leave grandma and grandpa’s check alone. If the GOP get their way, next they’ll be trying to make a law for children to take sole responsibility in being the financial supporter of their aging parents like they have to do for their minor children and eventually no social security check at all.

In addition, in the same breathe taking away elderly people’s independence, which would devastate mentally many elderly people who prefer living alone or love their independence. Elderly people love their children, but they do not want to live with their adult children and their families, be a financial burden or strain on them, or are set in their ways, and like being independent because it gives them a sense of stability and freedom. Also, there are some elderly people that might not get along with their in-laws and vice versa, I know a few of them, and it would cause a lot of unnecessary friction in a household that could even lead to divorce among some couples.

It was a newfound freedom to many elderly people when all of their children became grown and moved out the house on their own. At least I know it was for me because I am able to do what I want to do for a change, enjoy some things I like doing, cook when I feel like it, or whatever. When my children were living with me, their needs came first, it was all about them, and mine…maybe.

The GOP party is the real death panels. They feel like old folks have lived out their usefulness and moneymaking productiveness, so their of no use to society. When I was growing up, it was the old people that kept us alive with their wisdom and guidance.

Matthews: Sarah Palin Uneducated, Interviews Like She’s “Selling Makeup Foundations”
    by Glenn Davis | 10:22 pm, January 14th, 2011
In case you didn’t think enough people were talking about Sarah Palin, earlier today Chris Matthews weighed in. He heavily criticized Palin’s upcoming Hannity appearance…and even had help from Republican strategist guest Todd Harris.

Matthews dismissed the appearance as an “infomercial” and “like…selling makeup foundations.” And while Harris said he had no problem with going on Hannity, he does have a problem with Palin not trying harder to broaden her audience, saying that “she’s missing a real opportunity if that’s all she does.” Matthews even predicted how part of the interview will go:

“She’ll come up with some contortion of how she used [“blood libel”], and Sean will say, “I get it now” or some ridiculous thing.”

Matthews’ other guest, Democratic consultant Steve McMahon, was even less sympathetic to Palin’s cause, lambasting her for “claim[ing] to be the victim” after coming under fire for the now-infamous crosshairs map. Matthews piled on some more, saying he believes it’s “an assumption most people make” that Palin isn’t well-educated, going so far as to say that “there’s a lot of well-educated people who live in the country…the fact is, she doesn’t want to be one of them.”

      OUCH

    • GrannyStandingforTruth says:

More people need to speak out like Matthews did because politics is way out of her league, she is not qualified, and her way of thinking is dangerous. Her and her successionist husband are not good for America. The biggest mistake McCain made was bringing her on the political scene and exposing her to the limelight, which she lust after so much. She is a spotlight hog and feels that her little snarky and belittling comments are all it takes to run a government. Lawd help us all if she were to become President of the USA. People think Bush socked it to us, there would be an uprising sho nuff if she made it into the White House, and it wouldn’t just be poor uneducated people either. Folks with Ph.Ds and even government officicals would be participants in that uprising. I’m just saying.

Obama prepares to engage China on human rights as President Hu visits next week
    By Scott Wilson
    Washington Post Staff Writer
    Saturday, January 15, 2011; 3:40 AM

President Obama is planning to refocus attention on China’s record of suppressing free speech and political freedom in the coming weeks, despite the risk of further destabilizing an important relationship after a contentious year.

After elevating human rights as a guiding principle of his foreign policy at the United Nations last fall, Obama has been looking for ways to engage China’s leaders on the issue without undermining his efforts to enlist their help in dealing with Iran and North Korea, and in reviving the world economy.

Senior administration officials say he is exploring ways to better reach Chinese citizens directly, perhaps by using technology unavailable to many of his predecessors.

He has also been seeking advice from Chinese dissidents and human rights advocates ahead of President Hu Jintao’s state visit next week. On Thursday, Obama met for more than an hour at the White House with five advocates for human rights in China, the first time he has done so in that venue.
