Videos | Mitt Romney: CALLING ALL TAX RETURNS! What Is Mitt Romney Hiding?

Check out  the Truth Team’s breakdown of how Mitt Romney’s economic plans would create  800,000 jobs overseas.

Mitt Romney refuses to release his tax returns because he doesn’t want the American people to know whether he’s taken advantage of foreign tax havens to avoid paying his fair share. His corporate tax plan would create 800,000 jobs overseas, which could come at the expense of American jobs. Romney believes in a tax system with two sets of rules – one for himself and others at the top, and another for everyone else.

And the DNC isn’t the only one’s calling on the Mittster to release his taxes. Check it out:

CNN’s Erin Burnett

“It’s time, Mitt. Time to put them on the table. We all know what it is. Your taxes…. Mitt Romney is running on his business expertise. His tax returns are a relevant window into how he conducts his business affairs. If he refuses to release them, it is because: one, he had a lot more money in tax shelters in prior years than he does now. Two, he did something shady. Or, three, he’s stupid.”

Americablog highlights the segment here.

Haley Barbour also renewed his call for Romney to release his tax returns now, joining the GOP chorus of Steele, Bentley, Sessions, Jones, Kristol, Will, and Dowd in urging Romney to come clean.

Did Mitt Romney pay any federal taxes at all in 2009?

On the issue of Mitt Romney’s tax returns, my colleague George Will put it simply: “The cost of not releasing the returns are clear. Therefore, he must have calculated that there are higher costs in releasing them.”

The question is what could be in them that would be so damaging to the Romney campaign. Right now, the most popular theory is that Romney simply didn’t pay any federal taxes at all in 2009. As Joshua Green wrote, ” It’s possible that he suffered a large enough capital loss that, carried forward and coupled with his various offshore tax havens, he wound up paying no U.S. federal taxes at all in 2009.”

But the tax experts I’ve spoken to are skeptical. “Romney had a $4.8 million capital loss carryover coming into 2010,” says Edward Kleinbard, a professor of tax law at the University of Southern California. “So that means no capital gain income in 2009. If you look on the first page , though, he had lots of ordinary income (interest mostly), and dividends, which are taxed at the same rate as capital gains but which cannot be sheltered from tax by capital losses. So presumably he had some positive income tax in 2009.”

Roberton Williams, a senior fellow at the Tax Policy Center, agrees. “It’s unlikely that his taxable income was zero or even close enough to zero that his credits would zero out his tax liability completely,” he says.

Why Mitt Romney should just release his tax returns
Posted by Chris Cillizzaat 12:01 PM ET, 07/17/2012

Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney continues to be steadfast in his refusal to release any more than his last two years of tax returns, a position that has already become a distraction to his presidential campaign and could cause considerably more trouble if he doesn’t figure out a better answer — and soon.

“Perception is becoming Romney’s reality and these issues have now risen above mere distractions,” said John Weaver, a Republican consultant and former senior adviser to Sen. John McCain’s (R) 2000 and 2008 presidential campaigns. “The President has had the worst three months of any incumbent, due to the economy, since George H.W. Bush in 1992, and yet Romney has lost traction among key demographic groups in the vital swing states. He has got to get this behind him or he’s going to face summer definition ala [Bob] Dole and [John] Kerry. ”

Democrats are doing everything in their power to define Romney negatively before the two parties gather for their national conventions later this summer.

The Obama campaign is up with a new — and brutal — ad today in which a narrator details Romney’s complex financial history and then says that it all “makes you wonder if some years he paid any taxes at all”, adding: “What is Mitt Romney hiding?”
