In this episode, Darryl Pinckney discusses his essay “In Ferguson.” He visited Ferguson, Missouri, in November, when a grand jury decided not to indict Darren Wilson, the white police officer who shot and killed unarmed black teenager Michael Brown. The dissatisfaction Pinckney felt as he followed news coverage of events in the area compelled him to visit and bear witness. Once on the ground, he discovered that despite sometimes violent expressions of anger within the community, the danger he felt was always from the police.

Jury selection will begin today in a federal court case that pits musicians Pharrell Williams, Robin Thicke and T.I. (aka Clifford J. Harris) against representatives of the estate of Marvin Gaye. The estate is suing the artists over the perceived similarities between Thicke’s 2013 hit single “Blurred Lines” and Gaye’s 1977 song “Got to Give It Up.”

Things took a strange turn when deposition transcripts revealed that Thicke told lawyers that he didn’t actually have much involvement in the song’s creation, as he was drunk and high on Vicodin at the time. Thicke also backed away from the statements he made to GQ, claiming he didn’t do a single sober interview that year.

The Chicago police department operates an off-the-books interrogation compound, rendering Americans unable to be found by family or attorneys while locked inside what lawyers say is the domestic equivalent of a CIA black site.
The facility, a nondescript warehouse on Chicago’s west side known as Homan Square, has long been the scene of secretive work by special police units. Interviews with local attorneys and one protester who spent the better part of a day shackled in Homan Square describe operations that deny access to basic constitutional rights.
Alleged police practices at Homan Square, according to those familiar with the facility who spoke out to the Guardian after its investigation into Chicago police abuse, include:
Keeping arrestees out of official booking databases.
Beating by police, resulting in head wounds.
Shackling for prolonged periods.
Denying attorneys access to the “secure” facility.
Holding people without legal counsel for between 12 and 24 hours, including people as young as 15.
At least one man was found unresponsive in a Homan Square “interview room” and later pronounced dead.

Paula Patton has booked the lead role in ABC’s drama pilot “Runner,” which is based on the Turkish series titled “Son” – a “Traffic”-like project, but, instead of drugs, its focus is on arms dealing, and seen through the eyes of a woman lead.
Written by Michael Cooney, the ABC remake will center on Lauren Marks, whose seemingly perfect life is ripped apart by one simple twist of fate, and to uncover the truth, she must follow a trail of lies that takes her into the world of cartels and the illegal gun trade between the U.S. and Mexico.
Patton will of course play Lauren Marks.

What is Black Vegetarianism?
I am a blegitarian vacketerian a Black person who does not eat meat and this piece is dedicated to the wonders and (insert outdated slang reference for fantastic)ness of Black vegetarianism. You can read this entire piece or the first sentence of each paragraph and move to the comments sections. It’s your choice.
Black vegetarianism reduces pain and extends life. It’s as if you become a mutant in the Marvel Universe (Storm, Black Panther, Misty Knight, and Luke Cage in one person). When compared to those who eat meat, vegetarians/vegans have lower: risks for heart disease, LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, rates of hypertension, rates of type 2 diabetes, overall cancer rates, risks for obesity and stroke. According to the CDC, the leading causes of death for Black folks are heart disease, cancer, and stroke. Only the cool POC believe in improving their quality of life by cutting out the meat. Think of it as low cost insurance with no mysterious bill after you have already paid the copay.
Black vegetarianism is moderation. There is no need to start fast. You could participate in Meatless Mondays, go “vegan before 6,” or eat at least a few vegetarian meals per week. Hell, you could even have a non-meat potluck as an excuse to be nosy and find out what other people like so that you can judge them after they leave. I would also recommend visiting a vegetarian friendly restaurant. Ethiopian food FTW!
Black vegetarianism is flavorful. A common complaint by those who aren’t vegetarian is the “blandness” and “boredom” associated with eating non meat based items. As if meat has a ton of flavor without seasonings. This is a short list of great tasting soul food dishes I have eaten without any animal products:

HYPERBOLICALLY SPEAKING, EMPIRE IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST SHOW ON TV
If you don’t watch Empire, you’re fucking up. Plain and simple. It is easily one of the most entertaining shows on television for various reasons. Sure, shows like House of Cards are coming back (!!!!!!) and other shows that people watch are good. Good things are great, after all. But you absolutely do not get with any other show what you get with Empire. Do I know this definitively? Of course I don’t; I think Beyonce deserved the album of the year and still haven’t listened to Beck’s album. Pshaw! But I never let a little thing like fact obscure my opinion. Here are 10 reasons (though by all means nowhere close to all-inclusive reasons) why Empire – after 7 episodes no less – is (hyperbolically speaking) the absolute best show on television.
1. The very premise of the show makes little to no sense. You’d think that firing out the gate with this assertion would be my undoing. Au contraire. This is the very reason why the show is so great. The premise of the show Empire rests on the main character, Lucius Lyon (played by one of the oddest individuals in the history of anything in Terrence Howard), who has ALS – you know ALS; it’s that incurable disability that you all kept dousing yourselves with ice water out of buckets for – being given a maximum of three years to live and attempting to take his company public via an IPO and forcing his three sons – Andre, Jamal, and Hakeem – into a de facto compeition to head the company after he dies. Nothing too crazy there right? Wrong. Only one of them is even REMOTELY qualified to run the company. How is it even a competition? From the outset, any person watching was like, “oh, Andre the multi-degreed CFO of the company actually handles the fuckin’ COMPANY BUSINESS…he’s the only one that makes sense.” But nope. Jamal, the artsy recluse who seeks acceptance from his father over his gay lifestyle, seems completely unable to run a company, much less his career, and Hakeem, the “star” of the family definitely shouldn’t be running anything. He’s a superstar (on the show anyway), but he ain’t a businessman. So yep, let’s pit these two unqualified brothers + one actually legitimately qualified brother against one another and see how this shit shakes out. Shenanigans ensue. This is the premise of the show. All in, b. All in. It’s almost as if the writers knew we’d know it made no sense but had gotten too far into their story before realizing how non-sensical it is so they just said fuck it, maybe nobody will notice.
We all noticed.

I am convinced there is a writer — or, perhaps, a group of writers — on the How to Get Away with Murder staff whose sole job is to think of and craft the single Blackest scene they can possibly film that week while maintaining the show’s integrity. Perhaps their job title is ‘Blackness Grip” or “Cornel West” or something. Why do I believe that? Well, just let me say this…
Last night, I attended a screening of August Wilson: The Ground on Which I Stand, the newAmerican Masters documentary on the iconic Pittsburgh-born playwright. The doc — which was amazing — detailed Wilson’s upbringing in the predominately Black Hill District, his involvement with the Black Power movement, and his everlasting love for Blackness; Black customs, Black history, Black colloquialism, Black stories, Black everything. Many of Wilson’s friends, family, and peers — including Charles S. Dutton, Viola Davis, James Earl Jones, and Laurence Fishburne — also spoke of this love, often referencing how his words captured the rhythms and cadences and essences of Blackness in a way they’d never seen on stage or screen. This screening took place at the August Wilson Center for African American Culture. There was a panel discussion after the screening. Included on this panel were Phylicia Rashad and Ruben Santiago-Hudson; both of whom also spoke of Wilson’s visceral and bone marrow-deep love of Blackness.
This was perhaps the single Blackest event I’ve ever attended. A group of beautifully, intentionally, conspicuously, and unapologetically Black people discussing the beautifully, intentionally, conspicuously, and unapologetically Black work of a beautifully, intentionally, conspicuously, and unapologetically Black man. All taking place in a center named after him.
And it still wasn’t as beautifully, intentionally, conspicuously, and unapologetically Black asCecily Tyson combing Viola Davis’s hair last night on How to Get Away With Murder.
I watched it at my cousin’s place after the screening. It was her birthday and she’s bougie, so The Wife Person and I brought her some Thai food and a mini red velvet cake, and we all sat in awe as the sound of Davis’s hair becoming combed by the 511-year-old Tyson jumped through the screen.
I won’t even attempt to unpack that scene because, well, I don’t know if I can. At least not before watching it 17 more times and reading The Bluest Eye again. I just know that it was 8-rock Black. Vantablack. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom but only if Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom took place on an event horizon Black. “I’ve run out of ways to describe its Blackness” Black.

Queen Latifah stars as legendary blues singer Bessie Smith in the HBO Films drama “Bessie,” which is directed by Dee Rees, from a screenplay penned by Rees, Christopher Cleveland & Bettina Gilois.
With a story by Rees and Horton Foote, the film focuses on Smith’s transformation from a struggling young singer into “The Empress of the Blues,” one of the most successful recording artists of the 1920s.

It’s hard for me to believe that they don’t think they can prove beyond a reasonable doubt that this was a hate crime, that the child was racially profiled, stalked, physically assaulted, and then murdered.

Moving forward to fix our broken immigration system

Our immigration system has been broken for decades. Our country deeply values fairness, but our immigration system has become unfair to businesses, workers and families alike.
That’s something I’ve been trying to change as president. We have focused on securing our borders, and today the resources that the Department of Homeland Security dedicates to the southwest border are at an all-time high. Since I took office, apprehensions at the border — a key measure of illegal crossings — are at their lowest level since the 1970s, and the number of undocumented individuals living in the U.S. has stopped growing for the first time in decades.
We also worked with the last Congress on a comprehensive fix to our broken immigration system. Sixty-eight Republicans, Democrats and Independents passed a common-sense bill in the Senate to reform our immigration system while helping to grow our economy and shrink our deficits. Yet for more than a year and a half, Republicans in the House kept that bipartisan bill from reaching my desk.
In 2012, I took an initial step to help hundreds of thousands of “Dreamers” — young people who were brought to this country as children — live and work in the country they call home. And late last year, in the face of congressional Republicans’ continued refusal to act, I took new common-sense steps within my authority to fix as much of our broken immigration system as possible. The steps I announced will help us secure the border, prioritize scarce resources, and hold millions of undocumented immigrants accountable by requiring them to pass background checks and pay taxes in order to have a chance to temporarily remain here without fear of deportation.
These steps are good for our economy, for our families and for our country. They are also the kinds of steps taken by every Republican and Democratic president for the past half-century. They are consistent with the laws passed by Congress and with rulings of the Supreme Court.
Understandably, however, much recent attention has focused on a single court decision in Texas in response to a partisan lawsuit that delays some of these lawful, common-sense steps. To those who are affected and disturbed by this ruling, I share your concerns. To those who have questions, the Department of Homeland Security will continue to provide information.
But make no mistake, I disagree with this judge’s ruling. Just yesterday, the Department of Justice asked the court for an emergency stay of this misguided decision, and it has already filed a notice of appeal. My administration will fight this ruling with every tool at our disposal, and I have full confidence that these actions will ultimately be upheld.

Illinois’ new GOP Governor, Bruce Rauner, will personally receive a $750,000 per year tax cut as a result of his decision not to continue the state’s temporary 1.25% income tax surcharge that expired last year.
His taxes were cut by an amount equal to the annual income of 14 families of four making the median income. And remember that after adjusting for inflation, that median income number has not materially increased in about 35 years, since virtually all of the income growth resulting from the massive increase in worker productivity over that period has been siphoned off by speculators like Rauner.
Rauner, who made $61 million in 2013 – or $29,000 per hour – is one of a small group of multi-millionaire speculators who would directly benefit enormously from lower state tax rates. Among them is his friend Ken Griffin, reputedly the wealthiest man in Illinois, who contributed $2.5 million to Rauner’s campaign for Governor – and has also pitched in $10 million to a $20 million campaign war chest that Rauner plans to use to run opponents to members of the Legislature that oppose his policies.
Griffin and his soon-to-be former wife, Anne Dias Griffin, are involved in a high profile multi-million dollar divorce battle. He and Dias are fighting over the control of tens of millions of dollars.

E!’s acerbic fashion review show “Fashion Police” may have finally crossed a red line.
Host Giuliana Rancic employed not one but two racially tinged stereotypes to criticize Disney Channel star Zendaya Coleman’s red carpet look: a sleek Vivienne Westwood gown and dreadlocks.
“I feel that she smells like patchouli oil . . . or weed,” Rancic said during Monday night’s show. “Yeah, maybe weed.”
Chuckles all around.
Zendaya, whose father is black, immediately zeroed in the not-so-subtle racial subtext of Rancic’s comments.
In response, the 18-year-old star issued a rather lengthy takedown of Rancic’s comments — noting that despite the stereotype of dreadlocks being associated with weed smokers and Rastafarians, they are a symbol of “strength and beauty.”
“There’s a fine line between funny and disrespectful,” she wrote in the missive on Twitter.
Zendaya noted that Ava DuVernay, who directed the Oscar-nominated film “Selma,” Harvard professor Vincent Brown, author Terry McMillan and Grammy-nominated soul singer Ledisi all have dreadlocks.
“There is already a harsh criticism of African American hair in society without the help of ignorant people who choose to judge others based on the curl of their hair,” she added. “My wearing my hair in locs on an Oscar red carpet was to showcase them in a positive light, to remind people of color that our hair is good enough.”

Christopher Ruddy, the chief executive of the Web and cable-TV outlet Newsmax, says there’s a good reason why he pledged a seven-figure donation to the Clinton Foundation. “I really like what he does,” says Ruddy, referring to Clinton Foundation name partner and former president Bill Clinton.
Ruddy and Clinton have come a long way, as explained in this New York Times piece by Jeremy W. Peters. Back in the 1990s, Ruddy was a well-known Clinton antagonist, as he explored the death of White House aide Vince Foster in the New York Post and later at the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Deranged by Obama, Republicans are spouting nonsense

Republicans had better divert some of their campaign cash toward finding a cure for Obama Derangement Syndrome. If they don’t, their nemesis will beat them in a third consecutive presidential contest — without, of course, actually being on the ballot.
GOP power brokers and potential candidates surely realize that President Obama is ineligible to run in 2016. Yet they seem unable to get over the fact that he won in 2008 and 2012. It’s as if they are more interested in vainly trying to rewrite history than attempting to lay out a vision for the future.
Obama Derangement Syndrome is characterized by feverish delirium. The Republican Party suffered an episode last week when former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani began speaking in tongues about Obama’s patriotism.
“I do not believe, and I know this is a horrible thing to say, but I do not believe that the president loves America,” Giuliani said. “He doesn’t love you. And he doesn’t love me. He wasn’t brought up the way you were brought up and I was brought up, through love of this country.”
This is obviously a nonsensical thing to say about a man who was elected president twice and has served as commander in chief for more than six years. Pressed to explain himself, Giuliani ranted and raved for several days about Obama’s upbringing, made demonstrably false claims about the president’s supposed denial of American exceptionalism, insisted that “I said exactly what I wanted to say” — and then finally issued a non-retraction retraction in a Wall Street Journal op-ed.

LOS ANGELES — It is a testament to the dormant state of California’s once mighty Republican dynasty that the only GOP candidate either party gives a shot at capturing Barbara Boxer’s Senate seat upon her retirement next year is the one who is resolutely refusing to run: former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
Last week, Rice topped a statewide Field Poll of 18 potential candidates, drawing the support of 49 percent of likely voters, compared with 46 percent for state Attorney General Kamala Harris, the only declared Democratic candidate so far. What does it take for Senate Republicans to decide not to confirm Loretta Lynch, who is President Obama’s nominee to be attorney general? At what point is the lawlessness simply too much?
It is entirely within the power of the newly elected Republican majority in the Senate not to confirm Ms. Lynch. The only question is whether the GOP majority will exercise its constitutional authority to do so.
Personally, I wanted to support Ms. Lynch’s nomination. Six years of Eric Holder has done enormous damage, and Ms. Lynch’s service as the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York has earned her a reputation as a relatively no-nonsense prosecutor. However, the answers she gave at her confirmation hearing are, in my view, disqualifying for serving as our nation’s chief law enforcement officer.
When asked how she would be different from Eric Holder—the most partisan attorney general our nation has ever seen—she could identify no meaningful way she would differ from him.
When asked whether she would defend President Obama’s illegal executive amnesty—which Obama himself acknowledged, 22 times, he had no authority to undertake and which a federal court has just enjoined as unlawful—she responded affirmatively, saying that she thought the Administration’s contrived legal justification was “reasonable.”

Gallup poll: Democrats losing sympathy for Israel

The number of Democrats who feel more sympathetic toward Israelis than Palestinians has dropped 10 points in one year, according to a new poll.
In a Gallup poll released Monday, less than half of Democrats — 48 percent — say they sympathize more with Israelis than Palestinians when it comes to tensions in the Middle East. By contrast, 83 percent of Republicans sided with Israel. Fifty-nine percent of Independents answered similarly

Darren Hodges, a Tea Party Republican and councilman in the windy West Texas city of Fort Stockton, is a fierce defender of his town’s decision to ban plastic bags. It was a local solution to a local problem and one, he says, city officials had a “God-given right” to make.
But the power of Fort Stockton and other cities to govern themselves is under attack in the state capital, Austin. The new Republican governor, Greg Abbott, has warned that several cities are undermining the business-friendly “Texas model” with a patchwork of ill-conceived regulations. Conservative legislators, already angered by a ban on fracking that was enacted by popular vote in the town of Denton last fall, quickly followed up with a host of bills to curtail local power.
“The truth is, Texas is being California-ized, and you may not even be noticing it,” Mr. Abbott said in a speech at the Texas Public Policy Foundation, an influential conservative think tank, just before he took office last month. “Large cities that represent about 75 percent of the population in this state are doing this to us. Unchecked overregulation by cities will turn the Texas miracle into the California nightmare.”

Manchin Would Vote To Block Obama’s Immigration Actions After DHS Is Funded

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) can count on the vote of Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) on his new standalone bill to overturn President Barack Obama’s 2014 immigration actions, but only after a “clean” Homeland Security funding bill passes, according to his office.
Manchin spokesman Jonathan Kott said in an email Tuesday that the senator would want both the Senate and the House to pass DHS funding legislation first.
Manchin said recently he would refuse to link the immigration provisions to DHS funding, but said when asked that he would support standalone legislation to block the president’s executive actions on immigration.
“Sure,” he told reporters earlier this month. “Yeah.”
“I agree the president overstepped. I’m fine [with a standalone bill]. I’ll vote,” Manchin said, adding that he would refuse to support linking it to DHS funding because “the security of our nation is too important.”
On Monday, facing implacable Democratic opposition, McConnell moved to de-link DHS funding from the immigration proposals and released a separate bill that reverses Obama’s latest immigration initiatives.
If McConnell keeps the 54 Republicans in line, he’ll need 5 Democrats along with Manchin to defeat an inevitable filibuster.

WASHINGTON — Republicans just blinked on immigration.
The months-long standoff over President Barack Obama’s executive actions on immigration took a major turn late Monday when Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) proposed decoupling funding for the Department of Homeland Security from legislative action against Obama on deportations.
The threat of withholding DHS funding to block Obama’s immigration moves has been the centerpiece of the GOP’s political strategy for months. McConnell’s proposal to de-link them is a sign that he’s trying to find a way out of a battle that GOP leaders in both chambers never really wanted, but which has been pushed by hard-liners within the party.
The DHS funding bill that blocks Obama’s initiatives to shield more than 4 million people from deportation has already passed the House, but McConnell has been unable to overcome a Democratic filibuster in the Senate. McConnell brought it to a vote again Monday afternoon, and for the fourth time Senate Democrats successfully filibustered it.
Moments later, McConnell put legislation on the calendar to overturn Obama’s immigration actions in a standalone manner — separate from DHS funding.
“This looks like a cover vote to eventually pass a clean DHS bill,” said a conservative Republican aide on Capitol Hill, who requested anonymity
to criticize the party leader.
The new legislation targets Obama’s immigration initiatives in November 2014 to shield mostly undocumented parents of American citizens from the threat of deportation. Unlike the House-passed bill, it does not target Obama’s 2012 program to protect young people brought to the U.S. illegally as children, the so-called DREAMers.
McConnell said the bill gives Congress “another option we can turn to” for the purpose of funding DHS if Democrats don’t let up in their filibusters.

GOP gets bad news on ObamaCare repeal plan

The Senate’s chief referee has dealt a significant setback to conservatives who want to send an ObamaCare repeal bill to the president’s desk this year.
GOP sources say Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough has raised red flags in response to queries about whether it’s possible to use a special budgetary procedure to repeal the controversial law “root and branch,” as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has said.
Senate Republican officials have pushed for an interpretation of the rules that would allow for repealing the law with a one-sentence provision on a simple-majority vote.
The special process is known as budgetary reconciliation. It can be used to circumvent the Senate’s customary 60-vote threshold to produce changes in spending and revenue.
But it’s a matter of debate about how broadly it can be interpreted.
Some conservatives argue that because ObamaCare impacts spending and revenue, 51 Senate Republicans and a majority of the House can pass a one-sentence provision. While President Obama would surely veto a repeal of the Affordable Care Act, many Republicans want to get such a measure on his desk.
And there is growing pressure on GOP leaders to make that happen. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Tea Party groups, including FreedomWorks and the Senate Conservatives Fund, have called on the Republican-led Congress to use reconciliation on ObamaCare.
“We think from what we’ve heard there’s a really credible case to be made that the one-sentence repeal instruction for reconciliation passes all the tests,” said Dan Holler, spokesman for Heritage Action for America.
“From our vantage point, we think there are credible arguments that you can get all of ObamaCare [repealed] through reconciliation and that’s where the focus of lawmakers should be as the budget comes up and as instructions are written,” he added.
But sources say MacDonough, who declined to comment for this article, doesn’t agree.

The Humbling of Rahm
All signs point to a second term for the Chicago mayor. But at what cost?

It ought to be a coronation, Rahm Emanuel must figure. But as he nears what might or might not be the end of his exhausting race for a second term as Chicago’s mayor, the former White House chief of staff and tough-guy insider on Tuesday faces a possibly humiliating setback—particularly ego-crushing because he is running against an extremely weak field of four, has vastly more money than any of them, has television ads airing 24/7 and has run the table on endorsements. He ought to be resting easy—well, Rahm seems never to rest, but at least he should be confident of a win
That’s never been the case in this contest, though, and every day that the uncertainly lingers is a day that exposes Emanuel’s weaknesses, especially in minority neighborhoods that seem sometimes to double as shooting galleries, where schools are hopelessly bad and jobs are near impossible to find. During his first run, against more seasoned competitors, it was clear early on that Emanuel would win; four years later, after Chicagoans have gotten to know the guy who spent most of his career in Washington—he was a congressman for four terms before heading to the White House—it’s not clear whether he wins outright tomorrow (he needs 50 percent plus one vote) or, according to the rules, faces a time- and money-consuming runoff on April 7 against the second-place candidate.
That will almost certainly be fellow Democrat Jesus “Chuy” Garcia, a Cook County Board member, former alderman, state senator and protégé of the beloved (by minorities and progressives) late Mayor Harold Washington. While I regularly tell friends and colleagues that I think Rahm will win outright, I’m too chicken to make that prediction here. A Tribune poll last week had Rahm at 45 percent to Chuy’s 20. Rahm’s trend is inching up slowly, but so is Chuy’s. An autodial poll of 737 people conducted Saturday by Chicago-based Ogden & Fry found Rahm at the tantalizingly close 48.3 percent; Chuy had 26.5.
I am brave enough to predict, however, that while there’s a chance Rahm might have to roam the frigid, windy wards of Chicago eating many slices of humble pie during the six weeks between Tuesday, February 24, and Tuesday, April 7, he will win in April. And when he does, I’ll also predict that Rahm, not known for introspection or self criticism, will become an even more arrogant and impatient version of the mayor who appears to think he is smarter, more energetic and more disciplined than any of the Chicagoans he governs—or certainly than any of his opponents and their supporters.
But here’s hoping that tomorrow’s election at least brings a wakeup call for the mayor and the city he is struggling to serve. The race might still be a crapshoot, but Emanuel has so many advantages, he should never have had to break a sweat.
To begin with, his opponents, all Democrats, except perhaps for Willie Wilson, who supported Republican Governor Bruce Rauner last November, are small names. Not even I, an avid follower of Chicago politics, knew who Chuy Garcia was when he announced his candidacy a few months ago. Bob Fioretti, one of 50 city aldermen—and, to his credit, one of the very few on the City Council who dares to vote against Emanuel—has little to show voters except his council dissent and an endorsement by former Bears coach Mike Ditka. (Rahm has Magic Johnson in his corner.) Fioretti and Dikta might appeal to the city’s white ethnics, but so does Emanuel’s predecessor, Richard Daley, who has endorsed Emanuel. Wilson, a multi-millionaire businessman—hospital supplies and gospel music—has a 7th-grade education. (On Sunday, speaking at a west side Baptist church, he urged young people to remain in school but also noted that, although he could afford to return to school himself, he chose not to “because our young men need to know that if they drop out of school, they can look at me and say, ‘I still can make it like he made it.’”) Finally, William “Dock” Walls might as well have the word “perennial” as his first name, because he runs regularly for mayor and loses always, usually with low single-digit totals.

As for Loehmann, whose lawyer did not return a call for this story, Loomis is livid about media coverage of the young officer’s personnel file from his time in 2012 with the police force in Independence, Ohio. The file, which Cleveland police admit they never saw before hiring Loehmann in March 2014, outlines numerous concerns about his emotional maturity that led to his forced resignation. Much of the coverage focused on a description in the file of Loehmann breaking down in tears at a firing range.

“This Timothy Loehmann thing, this is a sideshow,” he said. “Nothing in Timothy Loehmann’s history would have made him ineligible to be hired. The Select Committee recommended him unanimously. He was emotional at the firing range because his girlfriend of three years broke up with him in a text message.

Wasserman Schultz Reportedly Wanted to Paint Obama as ‘Anti-Woman,’ ‘Anti-Semitic’ If Ousted

Buried inside a Politico report about Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz‘s (D-FL) future aspirations was an interesting revelation: “When [Wasserman Schultz] sensed Obama was considering replacing her as chair in 2013, she began to line up supporters to suggest the move was both anti-woman and anti-Semitic.”
Wasserman Schultz is reportedly very much at odds with White House staffers, and rarely even speaks with President Barack Obama.
The report mainly focuses on Wasserman Schultz’s political future, and whether she should stay on as DNC chair through the 2016 campaign, co-chair a likely Hillary Clinton presidential campaign, or even run for Senate in 2016. A position in House leadership is unlikely for her, as the report notes, because Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Steny Hoyer (D-MD) are unlikely to leave any time soon. Her current term as DNC chair ends at the beginning of 2017.

We Would Miss Obamacare

WASHINGTON — Will it take the repeal of the Affordable Care Act or its evisceration by the Supreme Court for us to appreciate what it’s actually done?
Critics of the ACA are so insistent on pointing to the problems it has encountered — erroneous tax information to 800,000 taxpayers is the latest — that it was especially enlightening on Friday to talk with Sylvia Mathews Burwell, the secretary of Health and Human Services.
You might think of her as a wonk with a heart. She refers to her agency as the “Department of the Kitchen Table” because the issues it deals with, from health care to food safety to the problems facing elderly parents, are the sorts that we discuss at breakfast or dinner.
What does Obamacare mean at many of those kitchen tables? Because of the law, at least 10 million fewer Americans are uninsured — and that’s a conservative number. The drop in the nation’s uninsured rate is the largest since the early 1970s, when Medicaid was still taking hold and both Medicare and Medicaid were expanded to cover people with disabilities.
These aren’t just government numbers. Here is what Gallup said in January: “The uninsured rate has dropped 4.2 percentage points since the Affordable Care Act’s requirement for Americans to have health insurance went into effect one year ago.”
Gallup might have mentioned not just the mandate but also the financial help many Americans have received to buy coverage under the ACA. Some more numbers: 87 percent of the people who signed up on the exchanges qualified for subsidies, and the average assistance to each was $268 per month. Perhaps some out there would rather not have government help people buy health insurance, but this seems to me a good and decent use of our tax money.

Alaskans Now Allowed to Get High at Home
Alaska has beaten most of the lower 48 to getting high—legally. On Tuesday, the state law permitting residents to smoke marijuana in private went into effect. It makes Alaska the third state in the country to legalize recreational pot use. People in Alaska are also allowed to grow up to six marijuana plants and can carry as much as an ounce on them in public, though they can’t light up there. As with liquor, the law permits marijuana use only for people over the age of 21. Also, some counties have already started passing local ordinances to limit marijuana usage.
On Monday night, Wasilla banned the making of pot brownies as well as other restrictions, but those measures may stand once the state releases it guidelines for marijuana growers, clubs, and companies some time within the next nine months.
