Especially in a time when we poo-poo commitment – and not only glibly excuse ‘powerful’ men as ‘flawed’, and effusively validating and even encouraging decisions to stray and indulge themselves, and hurt their families;
Overlooking the importance of that assumed strength of character that should also automatically apply to, and is requisite in ones commitment to ones partner; or the presumed decency, integrity and honor integral to being seen as ‘hero’ and ‘great’ in the public sphere, that should also be indisputably intrinsic in fully living out ones marriage vows –

Today The Verge put together a nice little graph that shows the racial diversity breakdown at some of the biggest online and social companies (Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Twitter, etc). The lack of diversity within this particular industry isn’t surprising or new. But the handy graph showing how scant racial diversity is within the field is morbidly thrilling.
The most shocking statistic is that when looking at the numbers for black women in these companies, Amazon is the most at 7% and Twitter is the least with 0%. Not that there are no black women that work at Twitter, but with the number sitting at 14 out of nearly 3000 employees — that isn’t even half of a tenth of a percent. Though once you factor black men into the number, Twitter skyrockets to 2%, with the total number of people remaining at 49.
Yet, with so much chatter around hashtags like #blacklivesmatter and the general concept of Black Twitter, it’s shocking to see the number of black employees at Twitter fall well short of the century mark.

I can’t believe I’m going to interrupt my Friday morning to waste bits and bytes on the half-term governor’s daughter, but since she can’t keep her mouth shut, neither can I.
Bristol Palin, she of the abstinence only sex education who can’t keep her legs closed, lashed out at President Obama over the Ahmed Mohammed case. Let’s go to the tape.
This is the kind of stuff Obama needs to STAY out of. This encourages more racial strife that is already going on with the “Black Lives Matter” crowd and encourages victimhood.
The police made a mistake, clearly.
But why put more people against them? Why egg it on? Childish games like this from our president have divided our country… even more today than when he was elected.
How dare that Obama reach out to a CHILD who was unjustly suspended and arrested for making a clock while Muslim? (And, yes, unjustly arrested, as the Irving police chief admits they knew the clock wasn’t a bomb.) He’s stoking the fires of racial resentment because his father was a secret Mau Mau warrior and it’s his life’s mission to bring down the White Man! If people would stop talking about racism it would just go away! Dubya was a uniter; Obama’s a divider!
This, dear friends, is what happens in a country degenerating into banana republic status. Nonentities like Bristol and her mama and Donnie Trump are accorded the gravitas and respect once reserved to the likes of Roosevelts and Kennedys. Any half-brain-dead moron who looks good on the teevee box can parlay 15 minutes of fame into an interminable career. And the great American public laps it up, as a distraction from a world which, thanks to information overload and a lack of anyone to make sense of that information, becomes scarier and scarier. The blatherings of Miss Palin should attract no notice in a civilized, strong republic. But we’re in a state of increasing decadence, where the stupid and inane are getting a stranglehold on our discourse, aided and abetted by a media which no longer serves the function of gatekeeper, instead throwing whatever spaghetti it can on the wall and seeing what sticks long enough to entertain its patrons.
Dear Bristol: you’re an idiot. What Pres. Obama did is precisely what he should have done. Ever since Jan. 20, 2009, as the country has exploded in an animus heretofore unseen, he has been the Consoler-in-Chief. He has been to more funerals for the victims of your precious NRA than all the presidents before him combined. And if this one time he can uplift a young boy who was the victim of the evil your mother unleashed on this country, that’s what he’s going to do. That’s why we elected him.

John Kasich tries and fails to commend Latinos

Republican presidential hopeful John Kasich has been known, from time to time, to share anecdotes that get him into trouble. In 2011, for example, the Ohio governor threw a bit of a tantrum after getting a speeding ticket, lashing out at a police officer for doing his job, calling the officer “an idiot” for no apparent reason.
Keep this in mind while reading a new report from the L.A. Times about Kasich’s trip to Southern California this week, where he spoke about his party’s outreach to Latino voters.
At a luncheon hosted at a posh Orange County golf club by a local political action committee, Kasich heap praise upon Latinos – a crucial voting bloc, with 28 million expected to be eligible to vote in the 2016 election – for family values and work ethic, but then appeared to indirectly conflate Latinos and service-industry workers.
“A lot of them do jobs that they’re willing to do and, uh, that’s why in the hotel you leave a little tip,” said Kasich before a small group inside the Shady Canyon Golf Club, nestled in a gated Irvine neighborhood.
According to the Times’ report, Kasich told his audience, “This lady wrote me in my hotel there in L.A. She wrote this note. It said, ‘I really want you to know that I care about your stay.’ Is that just the greatest thing?
“So, you know, we can learn a lot and she’s Hispanic, ‘cause I didn’t know it at the time, but I met her in the hallway – asked her if I could get a little more soap,” said a chuckling Kasich.
I imagine the governor was trying to be complimentary, though it didn’t quite work.

Walker confronts questions about his faltering campaign

It’s practically impossible to put a positive spin on the state of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s (R) presidential campaign. Over the last month or so, the far-right governor, once seen as a top-tier contender and possible nominee, has seen his support simply collapse.
Walker apparently hoped to use this week’s debate to get back on track, but this didn’t work out either – over the course of three hours, Walker fielded only three questions. There were long stretches in which his presence on the stage was an afterthought.
Yesterday, the Washington Post published a report on Team Walker trying to reassure supporters, but the article included this discouraging tidbit.
Angst has built among Walker’s top fundraisers and donors in the last two weeks as his poll numbers have plummeted in Iowa and nationwide. Stanley S. Hubbard, a Minnesota media mogul and top Walker donor, said that while he is sticking with Walker for now, he is considering also giving money to Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.), former Hewlett-Packard chief executive Carly Fiorina and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. All performed well at Wednesday’s debate, he said.
“I think I might help some other candidates too,” Hubbard said. “There might be some good candidates.”
This is pretty much the opposite of what Walker needs right now. Usually, billionaire mega-donors survey a field and choose a candidate. In this case, Hubbard decided to bet on Walker – until very recently, when Hubbard started thinking (and talking publicly about) quite literally hedging his bets.

Scott Walker Nearing Life-Support Stage

This is a just brutal pre-autopsy of the Scott Walker campaign that Matea Gold and Jenna Johnson penned for the Washington Post. It’s hard to choose the choicest parts of it, but the ending is a proper summation:
[Stanley S.] Hubbard, the major donor [and media mogul] in Minnesota, said he likes what he is hearing from Walker and he doesn’t understand why his pitch “doesn’t turn people on.”
“I think Walker says all the right things,” he said, but “something’s missing in the demeanor.”
His folks are currently bucking up the sagging morale of his corp of “major” donors by pointing out that he has really strong approval numbers in Iowa that are second only to Ben Carson. So, while the base of the party isn’t offended by him and they kind of like him, there’s “something missing in his demeanor” that’s causing him to hemorrhage support.
This next bit shows that he’s really not capable of fixing this flat-lined demeanor of his:
Some backers also fear that, as a result of his drop in the polls, he has adopted a persona that doesn’t square with his low-key demeanor and personality. As one person who has known him for some years put it, the tough-guy approach — including his recent promises to “wreak havoc” on Washington — is not a good fit.
You’d think that his supporters would be happy to see a little spunk. But, no, they cringe at its inauthenticity and ask him to stop.
And, yet, they bitch that he doesn’t assert himself more in the debates. I mean, it’s not his fault that CNN only saw fit to ask him three questions in the three-freaking-hour debate, but couldn’t he have interjected or something?

ONE HOT MORNING in May, Kiana Hernandez came to class early. She stood still outside the door, intensely scanning each face in the morning rush of shoulders, hats, and backpacks. She felt anxious. For more than eight months she had been thinking about what she was about to do, but she didn’t want it to be a big scene.
As her English teacher approached the door, she blocked him with her petite, slender frame. Then, in a soft voice, she said, “I’m sorry. I’m not going to take the test today.” The multiple-choice test that morning was one of 15 that year alone, and she’d found out it would be used primarily as part of her teacher’s job evaluation. She’d come into class, she said, but would spend the hour quietly studying.
The teacher stared at her dark-brown eyes in silence while students shuffled past. “That’s a mistake,” he said with a deep sigh.
By her own estimate, Kiana had spent about three months during each of her four years at University High in Orlando preparing for and taking standardized tests that determined everything from her GPA to her school’s fate. “These tests were cutting out class time,” she says. “We would stop whatever we were learning to prepare.” The spring of her senior year, she says, there were three whole months when she couldn’t get access to computers at school (she didn’t have one at home) to do homework or fill out college applications. They were always being used for testing.
Kiana had a 2.99 GPA and is heading to Otterbein University in Ohio this fall. She says she did well in regular classroom assignments and quizzes, but struggled with the standardized tests the district and state demanded. “Once you throw out the word ‘test,’ I freeze,” she tells me. “I get anxiety knowing that the tests count more than classwork or schoolwork. It’s a make or break kind of thing.”

Suit Alleges ‘Scheme’ in Criminal Costs Borne by New Orleans’s Poor

NEW ORLEANS — Late at night, after the lawyers had gone home, Alana Cain washed the floors at a downtown firm. One morning, a ring disappeared; Ms. Cain, 26, was charged and eventually pleaded guilty. The judge ordered her to pay $1,800 in restitution. He also imposed roughly $950 on top of that in court fines and fees.
She paid in installments, coming to the collections office with $50 every two weeks for more than a year. Once, after too long a jobless spell, she was late with her payment. She phoned the court collections officer and told him she was getting the money. It was in her pocket when the police pulled over the car in which she was riding, citing a broken taillight. There was already a warrant; she spent a week in jail before she could see a judge.
On Thursday, Ms. Cain joined five other plaintiffs in a class-action lawsuit against the criminal district court here, among others, alleging that judges and court officials have been running an “illegal scheme” in which poor people are indefinitely jailed if they fall behind on payments of court fines, fees and assessments. The suit describes how fees are imposed with no hearing about a person’s ability to pay, and how nearly all components of the local criminal justice system — the judges, the prosecutors, the public defenders — benefit financially to some degree.
“The extent to which every actor in the local New Orleans legal system depends on this money for their own survival is shocking,” said Alec Karakatsanis, a founder of Equal Justice Under Law, a civil rights group, and one of the lawyers who filed the suit. The funding arrangements at the court have been particularly controversial here in recent years, in the wake of allegations of abuses in the way money raised from defendants has been spent.

The right end of the cops baton hit the kid on the left side of his head. The kid is obviously hurt, then the rest of the sociopaths arrive to take the kid down as though he were a criminal or a prison escapee. Cop number one who started this clusterf**k needs to be fired, and the rest of them probably need it too.
One thing that needs to change is this widespread acceptance that cops shouldn’t lose their jobs but should be treated differently than other civil servants. They’ve got their cop unions and their own internal systems for discipline, so they have become untouchable and that just isn’t right. We are left with no way to rid ourselves of bad cops, and the problem escalates as the cops become more violent because they never face any significant consequences for their behavior. They are paid by the citizens and they should be accountable to the citizens.
The piece of sh!t that went after this kid needs to be put on the street looking for a job at the VERY LEAST. You can’t “train” this ignorant hulk to be anything other than what he is, an ignorant hulk who wants to hurt people.
So where’s the outcry and rallying for this kid who was brutalized by 9 grown men – and for no reason..?
Good question. I hope the kid is okay, physically at least. We know that the emotional damage is permanent. I also hope that lawyers in Stockton have been ringing his mother’s phone off the hook because this PD needs to be sued. That is the only recourse available right now, I guess, folks need to use it.

Fiorina doubles down on Planned Parenthood falsehood

One of the amazing things about Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign was its indifference towards the truth. Plenty of politicians lie, but Romney had a unique ability to adopt a post-truth posture.
In the traditional model, a politician would make a claim, wait for it to be discredited, and then move on to the next falsehood. Romney preferred to skip the third part – he’d lie, wait for news organizations to catch the lie, and then effectively declare, “I like the lie, so I’m just going to keep repeating it anyway.”
Yesterday, GOP presidential hopeful Carly Fiorina decided to take the Romney model out for a spin. MSNBC’s Irin Carmon explained:
At Wednesday’s second Republican debate, Carly Fiorina described a secretly recorded video from an anti-abortion group, part of a series that includes Planned Parenthood executives, as showing “a fully formed fetus on the table, its heart beating, its legs kicking, while someone says, ‘We have to keep it alive to harvest its brain.’” She challenged Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama to watch the tapes for themselves.
One problem: No such video exists.
Under the traditional rules, candidates caught telling a falsehood during a nationally televised debate would try to finesse a subtle walk-back. In a case like this, maybe Fiorina would say she was exaggerating for effect, or perhaps speaking metaphorically. Maybe she’d argue that such a scenario could happen, even if she hasn’t seen proof.
But yesterday, Fiorina instead stuck to the Romney method of campaigning.
