Washington (CNN)—The leading Muslim civil liberties group in America called Monday for Republican Ben Carson to drop out of the presidential race after the retired neurosurgeon said this weekend that he doesn’t believe any Muslim should be president of the United States.
Nihad Awad, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said the group is calling on Carson to “withdraw from the presidential race because he is unfit to lead, because his views are inconsistent with the United States Constitution.”
Carson said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that he “would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation. I absolutely would not agree with that.” He said he believed that Islam was “inconsistent with the values and principles of America” and inconsistent with the U.S. Constitution.
Carson is currently a top contender for the GOP presidential nomination, taking third place with 14% of support in the latest CNN/ORC poll, released Sunday.
His comments came as he responded to another controversy involving a GOP presidential candidate and Muslims in America when a questioner told Donald Trump at a campaign event in New Hampshire that “we have a problem in this country … called Muslims” and said that President Barack Obama is a Muslim.
Awad insisted that it was Carson’s, not Muslim Americans’, views that are inconsistent with the Constitution, as the document states that there shall be “no religious test” for candidates seeking public office.

Saying that his church is his first priority, the Rev. Jamal H. Bryant said Tuesday that he is bowing out of a campaign for Congress he launched just eight days ago..
Bryant, the 44-year-old pastor of the Empowerment Temple in Northwest Baltimore, surprised many by announcing Sept. 14 that he would seek the Democratic nomination for the 7th Congressional District. That seat is currently held by Rep. Elijah E. Cummings.
Cummings, an 11-term Democrat, has flirted with running for the U.S. Senate seat that will be left vacant by retiring Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski. But in recent weeks Cummings has sent signals he would forgo that race — despite high favorable ratings in statewide polls — and seek re-election to the House instead.
Many observers of state politics were taken aback by Bryant’s decision to announce his candidacy for the 7th District, which covers portions of Baltimore City and Baltimore and Howard counties. Days after launching his bid at an event in Bolton Hill, Bryant said he heard from parishioners who did not want him to run.
“After we announced our campaign last week it quickly became clear that I had not heard from all the voices I needed to listen to — particularly the members of my church,” Bryant said in a statement to The Baltimore Sun.

In the trailer for the documentary Rosenwald, civil rights activist and U.S. Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) describes the type of school he went to as a child.
“It was a little school a short distance from my home—walking distance. Beautiful little building. It was a Rosenwald school. It was the only school we had,” Lewis said.
A Rosenwald school—named after Julius Rosenwald, a 20th-century Jewish philanthropist who made his fortune by co-founding the department store we refer to today as Sears.
The trailer, released exclusively by The Root, describes how Rosenwald was a relentless businessman but was also deeply inspired by the works and racial-equality teachings of Booker T. Washington. Or, more specifically, Washington’s emphasis on what a solid education could do for the racially disadvantaged in America. So much so that Rosenwald teamed up with Washington, and together they hatched a plan to build over 5,000 schools for black students in the Jim Crow South.

The shocking racial epithet hurled at USC’s student body president
When Rini Sampath decided to run for student body president at the University of Southern California, she said some students told her she would never win. She was a young woman and a minority, and she was running on a ticket with another woman, who was also a minority.
Their advice? Choose a white, male student as your running mate.
Sampath, 21, is no stranger to discrimination. She was born in Theni, a district in Tamil Nadu state in India, and she moved to America when she was 6. Classmates in Arizona asked whether her mom was from Mars, she said. Others told her she couldn’t play with them.
Why? Because she had brown skin.
“I had self-esteem issues because I was an immigrant,” she told The Washington Post. “I was struggling to learn English and I was struggling with what I looked like, in a sea of kids who didn’t look like me.”
Sampath and her female running mate, Jordan Fowler, won the election and now serve as president and vice president, respectively, of USC’s Undergraduate Student Government. Still, Sampath said, she doesn’t believe many USC students see her first as a student leader. Instead, she said, she thinks they see her — and judge her — based on where she is from.
Sampath’s struggle — no doubt the same for many minority students, she said — came into focus Saturday night when she was walking back from a friend’s apartment.
Someone leaned out of a fraternity house window, she said, and shouted: “You Indian piece of s—!” Then he hurled a drink at her.
“Once his fraternity brothers realized it was me, they began to apologize,” she wrote in a Facebook post. “This stung even more.
“I couldn’t quite figure out why their after-the-fact apologies deepened the wound. But one of my friends explained it to me the best this morning: ‘Because now you know, the first thing they see you as is subhuman.’

This statement was released by Pittsburgh Post-Gazette editorial page editor Tom Waseleski last week as a response to the negative feedback generated by “Remnants of Slavery“ — a shockingly and unapologetically racist column penned by the Post-Gazette’s Jack Kelly. Waseleski’s statement is concise, clear, sober, and objective. It is the very definition of editorspeak.
It is also bullshit.
As I read it, I wondered if Waseleski — a man I’ve exchanged professional emails with several times — believes what he’s saying, or if he’s attempting to protect an employee and the P-G‘s brand. I do not know. I do know, however, that the optimist in me wants to believe it’s the latter. That he knows it’s bullshit, but he’s obligated to stand up for his writers. He would not be the first and will not be last editor to do that.
But just in case Waseleski and anyone else on the Post-Gazette’s editorial team believes Kelly’s impressively terrible piece had any shred of historical merit or journalistic integrity, I want to play a little game. Let’s read Kelly’s piece again — word for word — but this time let’s replace every reference to slavery with a reference to the Holocaust. And then, after every 100 words or so, let’s check back and see exactly how fired Kelly and Waseleski and anyone else on the Post-Gazette’s editorial staff would have been if they dared publish something that trivialized and minimized the pain and the suffering of tens of millions of Jewish people the same way they trivialized and minimized the pain and suffering of tens of millions of Black Americans.

Vikings Installing ‘Portable Lactation Pods’ For Nursing Moms

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Nursing mothers are about to become more comfortable at Minnesota Vikings games.
The team announced Tuesday it will be installing “portable lactation pods” at TCF Bank Stadium, at US Bank Stadium and at the Vikings’ two corporate headquarters and its Winter Park training facility.
The 32 square-foot pods, made by Mamava, are equipped with benches, an electrical outlet for plugging in a breast pump and a lockable door.
Two pods are expected to be installed at TCF Bank Stadium in time for the Oct. 18 Vikings-Chiefs game.
“While we certainly encourage breastfeeding mothers to nurse where they feel comfortable, we have become increasingly aware of the need many moms have for the privacy and comfort that these Mamava lactation suites provide,” the Vikings’ COO Kevin Warren said.
The Vikings are the first NFL franchise to install Mamava pods in an NFL stadium,

Ben Carson says comments on Muslims were misinterpreted
In an effort to stop a growing controversy, Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson said his comment that he would not support a Muslim for president was taken out of context.
Carson, who fell to number three in the polls after the second Republican primary debate, addressed the remark during a news conference in Sharonville, Ohio.
“I don’t care what a person’s religious beliefs are or what their religious heritage is. If they embrace American culture, if they embrace our constitution and are willing to place that above their religious beliefs, I have no problem with it,” he said.

Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson, the stars of TV’s biggest new hit in years, are standing under the Chicago L tracks, filming a scene as trains rumble by above. He’s in a suit; she’s sporting a yellow skirt and blouse with leopards.
Their characters, once-married Lucious and Cookie Lyon, are still business rivals as “Empire” begins its second season Wednesday (8 p.m., WFLD-Channel 32), but the family comes first, and they’re trying to resolve an ordeal involving their youngest son, Hakeem (Bryshere Y. Gray). Howard chain-smokes between takes, while Henson squeals repeatedly when a bee circles her as she taps on an iPad.
That’s not the only thing buzzing around the hip-hop soap, which last spring became the first show, at least since 1991, to build its audience every single week. The series, centered on a family and its record label, averaged 17.3 million viewers (26 million across all platforms), had the youngest audience of any big-network drama and marked the top-rated freshman series among young adults in 10 years.
Just 12 episodes aired last spring, but 18 are planned for this season, split between a 10-episode arc this fall and, after a few months off, eight more next spring.

As GOP field shrinks, Marco Rubio gets the spotlight

Over the weekend, MSNBC’s Steve Kornacki, whose political perspective I nearly always agree with, said if he had to put money on the race for the Republican nomination, he’d bet on Marco Rubio. Literally one minute later, MSNBC’s Chris Hayes, whose views are also usually in line with mine, endorsed Kornacki’s argument.
Vox, which has been singing Rubio’s praises for quite a while, added yesterday that the Florida senator is the biggest beneficiary of Scott Walker’s withdrawal.
To be sure, yesterday was clearly a good day for the far-right senator. From the outset, the political establishment viewed a triumvirate of candidates as the GOP’s likely nominee – Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, and Scott Walker – and now that trio stands as a duo. What’s more, the latest CNN poll found only four Republicans reaching double digits: Rubio and the three outsiders who’ve never served a day in public office.
Is it any wonder Rubio is suddenly the “it” candidate? TPM’s Josh Marshall did a nice job summarizing the senator’s standing.
…I’ve never seen Rubio as a very strong candidate. He seems to lack the skills to make it in a national campaign. And his failure with immigration reform – both in choosing it as his signature issue and in fumbling it after he did – is telling on a number of levels. But he’s made few mistakes in this campaign and he seems to be slowing edging up in the polls…. Put simply, he remains viable and undamaged, even though his campaign to date has been undistinguished.
I have no doubt that the folks who are running Rubio’s campaign would use different adjectives. They’d have a more positive gloss. But I strongly suspect they see it in the same basic terms. He’s far from on fire. But he’s undamaged while his real opponents are either imploding or fizzling. The visuals and numbers show little reason for optimism. But I suspect they believe the structural logic of the contest is encouraging for Rubio and that time is on his side.
They’re right.

Obama has vastly changed the face of the federal bureaucracy

…Obama has presided over the most demographically diverse administration in history, according to a new analysis of his top appointments. The majority of top policy appointments within the executive branch are held by women and minorities for the first time in history.
…University of California at Berkeley law school professor Anne Joseph O’Connell has compiled a database of all government appointees confirmed by the Senate to more than 80 important policy positions between January 1977 and August 2015. O’Connell said that her research reveals that Obama has placed women and minorities in 53.5 percent of those posts. His predecessor, President George W. Bush, by contrast, installed women and minorities in 25.6 percent, while President Clinton’s number was 37.5 percent.
And Fanning’s nomination punctuates the fact that members of the LGBT community have also made similar advances under Obama:
There are now hundreds of openly gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender appointees in the executive branch, compared with a handful in past administrations.
…Despite the gains that these groups have made under Obama, none of them — except African Americans — are at parity with their numbers in overall American society. Women’s share of the top policy jobs rose from 23.3 percent to 35.3 percent from Clinton’s tenure to Obama’s, while the percentage of Latinos and Asian Americans roughly doubled over that same period, to 8.5 and 4.6 percent, respectively.
The percentage of African Americans in these posts under Obama is 14.4 percent, according to O’Connell’s analysis, just over one percentage point higher than under Clinton.
O’Connell and others said a combination of factors have contributed to why African Americans have not expanded their share of senior policy jobs under this administration. Clinton, the last Democrat in the White House before Obama, made a concerted push to recruit black appointees. And over time, government service has become less attractive to many talented candidates of color, who chose more lucrative opportunities in the private sector.
Donna Brazile, a Democratic consultant who has recommended candidates to the White House, said of the administration: “They’re constantly looking for new people to go in. And not everyone is willing to make that sacrifice.”

Independence hospital’s closing not enough to change Medicaid stance for Kansas conservatives
Speaker Ray Merrick: Problem is Obamacare

A southern Kansas hospital’s pending closure, which administrators blame on the state’s reluctance to expand Medicaid, hasn’t been enough to persuade Gov. Sam Brownback to soften his stance on the matter.
Mercy Hospital System plans to close its hospital in Independence, near the Oklahoma border, next month. Mercy spokeswoman Joanne Smith said expanding the program that provides health coverage to poor and disabled Kansans would have brought the hospital about $1.6 million in additional revenue.
“And that’s very significant for a small hospital like ours,” she told The Wichita Eagle

Brownback said the hospital closure isn’t because the state won’t expand Medicaid. “They should blame it on Obamacare,” he said.
With a population of more than 9,000, Independence will be the largest community in the state without a hospital. The closest alternatives are in Neodesha, about 16 miles away, and Coffeyville, 20 miles away.
Rep. Sue Concannon, a Beloit Republican who is an outspoken supporter of expansion, said she worries that the Independence hospital’s closing is “just the tip of the iceberg.”

In the process, she meets Eli Gold (Alan Cumming), sparking a mutual attraction.

As I’m sure you’ve all heard by now (even if you didn’t watch last night’s live broadcast), Viola Davis made history, becoming the first black woman to win the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Incredible when you consider that this was the 67th edition of the aging institution. Some would say, better late than never; for others, it’s about damn time!
This comes after just 5 previous nominations for black actresses in that specific category – Debbie Allen, Alfre Woodard, Regina Taylor, Cicely Tyson, and Kerry Washington for “Fame,” “St. Elsewhere,” “I’ll Fly Away,” “Sweet Justice,” and “Scandal” respectively, between 1982 and 2014 – a long 32-year span, which works out to about 1 black actress nominee every 6.5 years since the first.

SHANGHAI—On his first visit to China as U.S. Treasury secretary almost a decade ago, Hank Paulson made a point of flying first to Hangzhou to seek out Xi Jinping, then a provincial leader and an ardent champion of private enterprise.
Their meeting in a city that has minted tycoons like Alibaba founder Jack Ma conveyed Mr. Paulson’s hope to improve overall ties by focusing on business, the traditional pillar of the relationship.
That support is now crumbling. As president, Mr. Xi isn’t nearly so wedded to the private sector. His nationalist agenda alarms companies from Silicon Valley to Wall Street. Increasingly, Chinese state banks and telecommunications companies are buying technology made locally for national-security reasons, bypassing American tech giants. And although U.S.-China trade reached almost $600 billion last year, business has turned into an arena of strategic rivalry; White House threats to retaliate over alleged Chinese hacking of U.S. company servers almost spoiled Mr. Xi’s state visit to the U.S. this week. Only last-minute diplomacy rescued the trip.

Carson campaign welcomes anti-Muslim controversy

Republican presidential hopeful Ben Carson crossed an important line on Sunday when he said on “Meet the Press” that Muslim Americans, regardless of any other consideration, should be disqualified from the presidency. The comments drew swift rebukes yesterday from the White House, each of the leading Democratic candidates, and even many Republicans.
The retired right-wing neurosurgeon, however, doesn’t seem to care. Carson stood by the comment on Sunday night, and reiterated his message last night on his official Facebook page, declaring he “meant exactly what I said.” The GOP contender added, “Those Republicans that take issue with my position are amazing.”
The Council on American-Islamic Relations characterized the controversy as significant enough to warrant Carson’s withdrawal from the presidential race.
That’s obviously not going to happen. On the contrary, the Associated Press reported overnight that Team Carson seems delighted by the uproar.
Carson’s campaign reported strong fundraising and more than 100,000 new Facebook friends in the 24 hours after he told NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday: “I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation.”
His campaign manager Barry Bennett told The Associated Press on Monday: “While the left wing is huffing and puffing over it, Republican primary voters are with us at least 80-20.”
“People in Iowa particularly, are like, ‘Yeah! We’re not going to vote for a Muslim either,’” Bennett said. “I don’t mind the hubbub. It’s not hurting us, that’s for sure.”
And that’s arguably every bit as striking as Carson’s original sentiment.
