The Media’s Exploitation of the Police Killings of Black Americans| Wake up Black folks!

Alton Sterling’ son was on CBS this morning and was asked how he felt about police?   Now they are going after our children to help shoulder the burden of  their fears and bigotry.  And the parents of these children need to take notice.

WHAT THE FUCK?!!!And the 15 year old is asked to deliver a message to protesters. See where I’m going with this?

Watch the CBS interview here

And CNN can’t be OUTDONE!

I’ve been thinking about this lately. Hear me out. You don’t have to agree with it, but it’ where I am right now.

The death of black men & women and children are been televised like a reality show. These families of the victims go before the media cameras and spill their heart & Soul. They are being asked to forgive the killer of their family members within hours of their death. These folks are vulnerable, and they think going on TV will help them. While it gives voice to their grief and pain, in the long run, it has not always worked out in their favor.

I don’t believe this serves them well. The perpetrators of these killings stays silent on the sidelines, while they build up their defenses, gathering information and building up their counter-defenses using the very words the victim families are issuing.

The media DOES NOT care! It’ only goal is to get a story for ratings AND profit$.

I also don’t think thee attorneys representing the victim’s families always have their back. If they did, they would not sanction all these TV interviews, before any charges are brought against these killer cops.

Philando Castille’s family has a TV judge as their attorney. I’m sorry, but NO. HELL NO. I would not want someone defending my family who makes a living trying cases on TV. I’m not saying she’ isn’t competent. Just hire someone who IS NOT in the spotlight and has no agendas and no secondary gains by parading in front of the cameras. These families need better council, and they need it NOW.

Because after that POS George Zimmermans’ TV trial, we have seen time and again the grandstanding and dismal outcomes. Thee TV trials have become common place and used, I believe to appear that justice is coming, when in reality, It has become a sideshow that serves to insult our emotions and our intelligence, when our eyes and ears have seen the truth.

Look at the trials of those cops that killed Freddie Gray. It’ absolutely despicable to utter from their dirty, filthy mouths that Freddie killed himself, when we saw him being dragged into the van with his legs flailing in the wind like clothes on a clothesline.

Take note, white families of those slain cops in Dallas are not parading in front of the cameras being asked to forgive Micha Johnson or  offer words of wisdom to the protesters, or “what is your opinion of police, in general?” Not one of those slain police family members would sit their child in front of a media reporter and camera and allow them to be asked those FUCKED UP QUESTIONS.

Yet, Gayle King and Norah O’Donnell are just in awe of Cameron’s composure, his open heart, etc. GTFOH

But isn’t that what’s expected of the NEGRO?

I’ll stop here for now, but more to come. I’d appreciate your insights, comments, opinions, links, videos, photos to add to this discussion.

I don’t need to sit up in a town hall and listen to the same folks who for decades refuse to make any effort to correct their bigoted, racist, white privilege ways. I have nothing to contribute yo fixing racism. I’m not racist.

President Obama cannot and will not ever end racism. He doesn’t have a racist problem, RACIST DO.

RACIST WHITE AMERICA, OWN YOUR SHIT.

The danger with these sort of dubious town halls is that they more or less set us back…where some folks were just starting to see and get what black folks have been subjected to for all these years…with this town hall tonight and all the over-praising and talking up the ‘greatness’ and stressing the infallibility of police – and playing down and practically dismissing their victims and reducing victims and their murders to nothing much more than the inevitable lot and fateful end of folks caught up in unfortunate and dire economic and social situations that was bound to aid the unceremonious and untimely end of their worthless lives anyway…

Sham town halls like this one tonight, have the potential to validate police in their wrongdoing…gloss over police culpability and their consistent and ridiculous murderous records – and shut down attempts to force them to take stock …become accountable …to acknowledge their wrong-doing…to do better..

In praising police and forcing their victims to suppress their pain and their constant dehumanization, and just show up and play along…the brazen murders will only continue and some police will continue to feel and act as if they are invincible and not subject to any oversight, accountability and laws themselves…and the danger is that as in the case of Micah Johnson, the suppressed pain, demeaning and dehumanization may ultimately boil over when least expected – and could once again be taken out on random innocent folks…

      Not good..

America should have passed on this town hall tonight…not helpful in the least…At least not for black folks…

      • Liza says:

I’m definitely not going to watch the town hall, especially after reading all of these comments. Honestly, I wasn’t that interested to begin with. This whole idea that the oppressed and the oppressor (and/or their representatives) can be brought together and end up with newfound understanding of one another is just this side of offensive, as far as I’m concerned. And it doesn’t work.

I have not watched the Town hall yet and will withhold my judgement of it until I watch it myself in a little while..

But still, POTUS is a grown man…

He can choose whatever path he wants to chart…

He does not have to subject himself to anything..and especially not a farce of a Town hall…if indeed as so many are saying it was..

White House staff who negotiated and arranged this town hall should have done better…unless of course, this was exactly the way and outcome they planned and wanted…

I have little faith in or confidence left though in the ‘goodness’ or ‘honorable intentions’ of many of these same White House staff who brazenly and unimpeded, discount and dismiss and treat the historic black First Lady with as much disrespect, condescension and contempt as they do black folks generally…and quite frankly, inhabit the same mindset that instructs and drives the blind support of murderous police officers…

At some point this has to transcend political calculation for some, and be so much more than trying to lionize and build a legacy for the President for others…it has to be more about the immediacy of protecting black children, and black lives in general…

It has to be about stopping the madness…

And as long as folks are afraid and unwilling to hear or speak the truth for fear of rocking the boat, losing favor…we need to dispense with the sham gatherings, audiences and faux-concern that is carefully calibrated to score shallow brownie points for politicians and public figures…many of whom have spent years hiding and dodging and mealy-mouthing – even as a brave young Marilyn Mosby boldy spoke up and took a stand when it was not popular, but right …and nobody else would…

Politicians and celebrities have all now suddenly so much to say now that it’s ‘convenient’ to exploit this same thing they previously had nothing much to say about – except dodge and post praying hands on twitter…

But only now, it’s become the hot trend du jour…because now it’s cool to be seen on this side suddenly…but not too much before it causes you to lose your cush spot as nice person beloved of all white folk…they are all now exploiting it – and only care and are concerned only as long as they do just enough to come out at the end of this smelling of roses…

Meanwhile, folks are dying on the streets every day…and are told that their lives aren’t worth nearly the same as that of others..

In short, this has nothing to do with PBO, and everything with police killings & racist AMERICA.

He is doing whats expected to help cover & maintain the status quo, by appearing to not take sides. It really is politics

All we really have to do is look at all the rats who are coming out of the traps to put in their appearance and get their slice of cheese.

        • eliihass says:

Watching the town hall now Ametia…and Lord, was I so miffed at that bloviating, disrespectful, arrogant, idiotic twerp from Texas – The idea that ABC colluded with these racist folks to more or less, ambush POTUS…and nobody in the White House was savvy enough to anticipate and at the minimum contain this, is incredible…

So far, only black folks – the victims – are the ones who are speaking with forgiveness and open to forgive…The young and impressive and smart and polite kid from Ferguson who is now a student at Howard, asked an excellent question..I was very proud of him..

My entire point is that if these town halls only serve to validate and congratulate and talk up the same police officers who are the ones killing us…and if the point is to lecture black folks – and in some instances, the President…to stress how much more important and valuable police and their lives are and how much more superior the pain and loss their families feel – …and black folks who are their victims are made to apologize for even daring to complain…WTF…It seems to be all about assuaging police…the black victims are being forced to suppress their hurt and pain and continued dehumanization…while also being asked to talk up the police who target and kill them..

Everyone is tip-toeing around police even as they continue to murder black folks…

The truth is that POTUS being able to invoke his white grandparents automatically makes his experience as a black person entirely different – even from his wife’s…FLOTUS’…and I bet that FLOTUS – just as she will never run for office, will not entertain a sham gathering of this sort, because she will have a few self-experienced truths to share…and perspectives too that will not go down well with folks…This FLOTUS after all was the same one whose life was threatened by a random white police officer in Maryland who was periodically assigned as part of the advance police motorcycle dispatch for the President and First Lady’s motorcades…

The police guy didn’t threaten the life of the elected POTUS but that of the FLOTUS – the President’s unelected black wife…

And the guy remains on the Maryland police force to this day…

I repeat as I’ve done again and again, that until some of these folks who work for the White House and POTUS show me differently, I have no more use for them than I do for many of these police-defending folks who deny black folks the right to respond to being murdered like worthless animals – for no other reason other than their black skin..

      • yahtzeebutterfly says:

I hurt so much for the Black victims’ loved ones who were not given a chance to ask President Obama a question. It was cruel for ABC to make them sit there and have it look, as eliihass wrote, like the network had

BUT BUT BUT,,,according to that ABC town hall, white folks got to voice their grief about us calling out the killer cops. Thez good cops, after all.

  6. Micah Xavier Johnson: Made in America, a Failed Human Rights State

    http://www.blackagendareport.com/us_failed_human_rights_state

“Johnson’s violent actions articulated the rage of millions of oppressed people wholly who are tired of being killed, jailed, poisoned and blamed for their plight created by an indifferent elite.”

As America and the World sit aghast at the orgy of violence in Dallas, Baton Rouge, and Falcon Heights, the most troubling subject is how to understand veteran soldier Micah Xavier Johnson, who shot 11 policemen, killing five of them. Law enforcement dealt with him much like America deals with any problem: with a bomb. As a society, America can embrace Black men as the perennial victims of fascist white police, because only powerless African Americans feel the losses. However, when a Black man violates the taboo of using violence against whites to express rage or hatred, he pushes a psychic panic button where white fear and (often feigned) Black empathy conflate. Many clamor to denounce Johnson as a crazed lone gunman, but others, holding a minority opinion, view his acts as a necessary evil to shake-up and sober-up White America and their compromised, quisling Black leaders. Johnson’s violent actions articulated the rage of millions of oppressed people wholly who are tired of being killed, jailed, poisoned and blamed for their plight created by an indifferent elite.

Exactly 50 years ago the cries for Black Power shook the middle class Black reformist leadership and frightened a hostile and callous white America. A young generation hardened by two years of riots and tired of oppression demanded that Black people to control their fate. The following year urban rebellions set Detroit and Newark to the torch and scores were killed and thousands were arrested. A shocked and angered President Lyndon Johnson commissioned the Kerner Report to study the causes of large-scale urban rebellions that had rocked hundreds of America’s inner cities. Johnson, disgusted by what he had been told about the report’s findings, never read the document. The Kerner Report’s most famous quote stated, “Our nation is moving toward two societies, one black, one white – separate and unequal.” Decades later there are at least two Americas, still unequal, and the problems are more acute than ever. This is in large part because Johnson and all his presidential successors have treated Black people as a crime problem instead of citizens, heaping new and more repressive laws and policies to enforce America’s version of Apartheid.

“Perhaps the war that impacted him most is White America’s War against Black people.”

Micah Johnson was only 25 years old, and few media pundits or commentators on the nightly news are going to consider that he grew up in a society obsessed with war and killing. He was born the year the Desert Storm war against Iraq started, and he died amid the era of the War on Terror in which he served in Afghanistan. Perhaps the war that impacted him most is White America’s War against Black people, a conflicted manifested in the FBI’s Cointel-Pro, Johnson’s Safe Streets Act 1968, Nixon’s War on Drugs 1969, Reagan’s “Three Strikes Laws,” Bush’s “Weed and Seed,” and the Clinton’s infamous Omnibus Crime Act of 1994. These policies have resulted in the wholesale destruction of millions of lives, and those Blacks lucky enough to escape the talons of white man’s justice experience little solace. Many suffer hypertension and mental anxiety, hoping their diction, good manners, dress, and faith will protect them and their loved ones from arbitrary arrest or execution. Micah Johnson refused to live like a hunted animal. Unlike the majority of Blacks who complain amongst themselves, Johnson went postal – like white folks do all the time, for far less serious reasons. For one riveting moment last weak, white America felt fear of an overdue payback for centuries of crimes against the world. Tragically, the heroic real-time video shot by Diamond Reynolds and her daughter and the old speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., appealing to the delinquent humanity of white folks, does not reach the cold-hearted racists like a dose of violence directed at them.

If one took the time to consider that a trained veteran of the United States military turned his weapons on his own society, the question would by: Why? How many Blacks have to have their homes, children, neighborhood, or lives stolen without recourse before someone acts out his rage? How much Israeli-styled occupation policing and graphic videos of police murders is enough for a person to feel hatred for those that do these things? How many unfair tickets and fines and funeral tee shirts before someone losses his ability to accept subhuman treatment? And, why should anyone be forced to live this way? How does one escape police that kill law-abiding citizens?

“How many unfair tickets and fines and funeral tee shirts before someone losses his ability to accept subhuman treatment?”

Contrary to those who dislike this truth, Micah Johnson is a hero to grieving Black mothers, families and friends who had children slain by racist killer cops. Anyone, including myself, who has been humiliated and unfairly treated by a racist Black or White policeman feels that some of these bullies and killer cops warrant a comeuppance. As for the reactionary Greek chorus that sheds one-sided tears for police but scorns their victims, they are a lost cause. Their moment of revelation will come when this empire collapses and they become the new niggers for whatever power replaces this one.

Finally, the same militaristic USA that taught Johnson and millions of others to kill in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and the world over has long covered up the relationship between discharged servicemen and violence throughout the society. Why should Micah Johnson be portrayed as an anomaly? Neglected, sin-sick, mentally challenged, and guilty conscience-afflicted ex-killers for Uncle Sam—often homeless and disabled—are time bombs and a pathological inheritance to a society addicted to war. Furthermore, Micah is just a raindrop in the storm cloud of a new generation that came of age during the Great Recession with no prospects for the future. This cohort fears nothing and has little to live for, and their anger at being targeted for prison, addiction, senseless wars and early death represents a clear and present danger to the bigoted oligarchs in power.

Micah Johnson did us all a favor by showing us that America is a time bomb with bloody and dark days ahead.

Meanwhile, 20 year old Adam Lanza who murdered 20 children and 7 adults including his mother, is to this day treated like he was just some misguided child…a victim himself…

And 22 year old cold-blooded racist murderer Dylann Roof, is treated like a kid and no newspaper to this day has ever described him as ‘Mr’ Roof…

The preemptive and deliberate aging of black kids to justify murdering and dehumanizing them …

  8. Liza says:

I read your earlier post on this, Ametia. I have some thoughts, but the weather is changing and I had my weather changing headache all afternoon. So, I’m having difficulty organizing my thoughts.

You make excellent points. It is painful to watch media exploitation of these people who are suffering, especially children. Their business model is to sensationalize the news, present it as entertainment, get the ratings and get the money. I just ask, what happens to the families of the victims when the cameras and mics are turned off? Furthermore, justice will continue to elude us for as long as these stories are being presented in this manner by biased and willfully ignorant people pretending to be reporters. And it seems to be getting worse.

But we are faced with a dilemma. How do we use the imagery and stories to build consensus and develop supporters without those same images and stories being distorted and revised and sensationalized by wealthy, uncaring, irresponsible, and profit driven media?

We know that images and stories have changed the course of history. We know how powerful they are. We have witnessed the birth and growth of social media and we know that the dissemination of images and truth is having a profound effect on public opinion.

I don’t know the answers. The only thing that comes to mind is strong support for strong allies like Amy Goodman of Democracy Now. Other than that, I’m mostly at a loss.

A Propagator of Race Hatred and Violence
    By JOSH MARSHALL
    Published JULY 13, 2016, 2:26 PM EDT

This isn’t getting a lot of attention. But it should. Everybody took note when Donald Trump repeatedly claimed that American Muslims across the river in New Jersey celebrated and cheered as the Twin Towers fell on 9/11 – an entirely fabricated claim. Last night on Bill O’Reilly’s show and then separately at a rally in Westfield, Indiana he did something very similar and in so doing cemented his status an impulsive propagator of race-hatred and violence.

The details of the rapid-fire fulmination are important. So let’s look at them closely.

    …………
Trump claimed that people – “somebody” – called for a moment of silence for mass killer Micah Johnson, the now deceased mass shooter who killed five police officers in Dallas on Thursday night. There is no evidence this ever happened. Searches of the web and social media showed no evidence. Even Trump’s campaign co-chair said today that he can’t come up with any evidence that it happened. As in the case of the celebrations over the fall of the twin towers, even to say there’s ‘no evidence’ understates the matter. This didn’t happen. Trump made it up.

The language is important: “When somebody called for a moment of silence to this maniac that shot the five police, you just see what’s going on. It’s a very, very sad situation.”

Then later at the Indiana rally: “The other night you had 11 cities potentially in a blow-up stage. Marches all over the United States—and tough marches. Anger. Hatred. Hatred! Started by a maniac! And some people ask for a moment of silence for him. For the killer!”

A would-be strong man, an authoritarian personality, isn’t just against disorder and violence. They need disorder and violence. That is their raison d’etre, it is the problem that they are purportedly there to solve. The point bears repeating: authoritarian figures require violence and disorder. Look at the language. “11 cities potentially in a blow up stage” .. “Anger. Hatred. Hatred! Started by a maniac!” … “And some people ask for a moment of silence for him. For the killer…”

We’re used to so much nonsense and so many combustible tirades from Trump that we become partly inured to them. We also don’t slow down and look at precisely what he’s saying. What he’s saying here is that millions of African-Americans are on the streets inspired by and protesting on behalf of a mass murderer of white cops… This is not simply false. It is the kind of wild racist incitement that puts whole societies in danger…

ATLANTA – CBS46 producer fired over racist rants about Black Lives Matter on Facebook
    July 13, 2016

FTVLive earlier today posted three Facebook rants by an Emmy-winning CBS46 photographer/producer Charles Beau Menefee in which he insulted the Black Lives Matter movement, calling them “unevolved, uncivilized turds” and wondering if the protesters could be boxed in and bombed.

In fact, he wished death upon members of the group at least twice.

Mark Pimental, general manager at CBS46, said Menefee has been fired, sending me a note informing the staff of his departure with his employee photo included.

NYPD cop secretly records supervisor pressuring him to racially profile black men

Here’s Audio of What Sounds Like an NYPD Captain Pressuring an Officer to Target Black Men
    13 JUL 2016 AT 14:19 ET

Gawker has posted an audio recording provided to them by an NYPD officer that seems to be an exchange in which the officer is being pressured to profile black men.

The recording was made in August 2012 during a performance evaluation of New York transit officer Michael Birch. He was expecting a routine evaluation, but instead he told Gawker, “the conversation just turned completely weird to me. Because he’s basically telling me it’s OK to racially profile.”

In the recording, his supervising captain can be heard criticizing him for only stopping two black men out of 54 people.

“Two male blacks,” the man’s voice can be heard saying. “So you’re telling me you only saw two male blacks jump the turnstile?”

Birch is currently suing the department, claiming he has been retaliated against for being a whistleblower on an illegal quota system. While his original case was dismissed, he’s filed an appeal with a higher court, Gawker reports. The New York Daily News reported on the tape but didn’t publish it at the time. The Daily News says the supervisor in the tape is NYPD Capt. Constantin Tsachas.

        She’s so full of sh*t…

        A mediocre, 3rd rate, self-serving, political ladder climber…

This is a woman who before today, any time a black person is murdered by police in California or elsewhere, would completely disappear and remain MIA until such a time as she felt the coast was clear again…

This is a woman who got annoyed and would not respond to questions when asked her thoughts during the Mike Brown incident…

This is a woman who has had the opportunity to do something as Attorney General of California, but has done absolutely nothing except campaign for the next political position that will take her to D.C…

Under her, minorities and black people have suffered even worse at the hands of the justice system…it’s so normal now that folks just accept their fate and don’t even bother complaining any longer…Because there’s no recourse…and nobody to complain to…

A cowardly, self-serving Attorney General of California who has done squat – and whose department and prosecutors have again and again colluded with police to oppress and dubiously over-charge minorities and others generally…

An Attorney General so cowardly and so self-serving…and whose only concern is herself and herself alone – and of course, her political ambitions and climbing into the next higher political position even after having done squat in the last one or the one she currently occupies..

Please…folks should really stop and think and stop falling for these obvious okey-dokes…

Stop being useful idiots for undeserving political opportunists…

BLACK LIVES MATTER, EXPLAINED, FOR PEOPLE WHO STILL SOMEHOW DON’T FREAKIN GET IT
    Damon Young, 7/13/16

    What is Black Lives Matter?

Black Lives Matter is a social justice and activism movement founded by Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi. It derives from the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter, created in 2013 in response to George Zimmerman’s acquittal in the death of Trayvon Martin.

It uses non-violent means — hashtag activism, protests, marches, die-ins, and intentional social disruptions — to both mobilize people interested in spreading their message and, most notably, to force people who are either apathetic about or antagonistic to it to pay attention.

And while the media has appointed several prominent people — the founding women, Deray McKesson, Johnetta Elzie, and Shaun King, to name a few — as “leaders,” there’s no concretized hierarchy or organizational structure.

Also, while the Black Lives Matter movement is relatively new, it has actually existed for decades. Centuries, even.

I can’t cheer hard enough for this.

  15. I knew Baton Rouge Mayor was full of SHIT on the first day of their press conference. He seem to be scolding people calling for justice.

Tell Media Outlets: Stop victim-blaming Alton Sterling and Philando Castile

Neither Alton Sterling nor Philando Castile did anything to justify being killed by the police. But that hasn’t stopped national news outlets from criminalizing and dehumanizing these two fathers – explicitly diverting attention away from the actions of the police officers.

We’ve seen this with Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, Sandra Bland, Michael Brown, Freddie Gray and so many others before. National media outlets victim-blaming Black folks for their own deaths and perpetuating a narrative that they had it coming, that because they “were no angels” that they deserved to die.

Enough is enough. It’s time for our community to pressure national news outlets to reassess their

  17. Reporters that ask grieving black families, who police have killed, to comment on the #DallasShootings have no regard for their pain or grief. They do not and will not exploit white victims pain. Leave black families the fuck alone.

  18. Notice how the media keeps parading black faces out to say how good the police have been to them? @CNN is leading the charges. I’m waiting for CNN to parade out the black faces that have suffered police brutality. Let them tell their story. Tell the public truth, dammit.

  19. The media saw a 15 yr old child publicly grieving for his dad. And here they come to exploit his pain. Asking him to address protesters. Leave the child the fuck alone & let him grieve.

    • Ametia says:

The child is not allowed to be a child, SG2. His relatives need to look out for him, because the media doesn’t give a good fuck about his grief nor his family’s.

They’re all vulnerable for any and all attention they can get to work through the pain and grieving of a family member being brutally KILLED by cops. Can’t anyone, especially attorneys GET THIS? Advise them to lay low and sort out their grief and let the lawyers work on their defense outside of the media.

  20. Ametia says:

Nope! not buying the hogwash about media wanting to praise Cameron Sterling’s grief.

    NEXT!

  21. Ametia says:

Notice the questions have been scripted and given before these interviews.

They are framed to elicit sympathy for the PERPS, THE KILLERS, asking this child to tell RACIST AMERICA that he is asking protesters, the very people who are helping him and his family to get justice to CHILL, the same old stereotypes of “no drug, no alcohol, no violence during protests”

It’s to ensure the safety of WHITE AMERICA, not your own communities.

It’s chilling to think that we have come this far, when our children are expected to defend & comfort RACIST AMERICA! And the families are engaging in this foolishness as well.
