Thursday Open Thread | The Administration Continues to Attack Education

This Administration is nothing but a cesspool of corruption, and anything that has been done to protect the consumer, they are trying to get rid of it.

Trump proposal to cap student loans would deepen inequality in higher ed
No need to bribe your kid’s way into school if those pesky poors can’t even afford to apply anymore.

A week after federal prosecutors revealed just how brazenly rich families cheat to get their kids into elite colleges, the White House proposed changes to higher education laws that would further widen the college access gap between people born into money and those less fortunate.

On Monday, President Donald Trump and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos announced that they want Congress to cap the amounts that students and families can borrow for post-secondary schooling. Though the proposal markets the lending caps as a path to reducing the tuition colleges charge, higher ed experts warned it would actually just make it harder for working-class families to compete with their richer peers on schooling.

If there’s one thing that last week’s bribery scandal — which led to dozens of arrests and thousands of tweets from outraged internet rubberneckers — threw into stark relief, it was that the upper crust is willing and able to spend huge amounts of money to burnish their children’s educational credentials.

“The fact that we have a two-track system for graduate and undergraduate education shows that we treat higher education as a commodity, and the borrowers as consumers, and that’s not how we should treat them,” Student Debt Crisis executive director Natalia Abrams told ThinkProgress. “I think with this whole college bribery scandal, we’re seeing that colleges are brands in their own right. When people are paying an extra million dollars to send their kids to a college on top of the yearly costs,” she said, it’s evidence that government should step in somehow.

They aren’t doing this out of concern for the students. They are doing this because, yes, they want to attack the access to education for non-Whites and non-Rich students.

And, because they want to force students to PRIVATE Borrowers – which President Obama’s Administration had cut down on. And, if they can’t get the money from Private borrowers, then, guess what….they are SOL, and can’t go to school…which, is the entire point. There is absolutely nothing relating to education where the unqualfied Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos has done that would consider being beneficial to students. She has done everything she could to harm non-rich, non-White students.

Because…THAT is who they are.

And, stopping people from getting an education wasn’t enough for Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos.
We got this information from them on Tuesday:

Betsy DeVos defends Special Olympics budget cuts: ‘We had to make some difficult decisions’
BY OWEN DAUGHERTY – 03/26/19 04:29 PM EDT

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos defended budget cuts to programs including the Special Olympics on Tuesday.

Appearing before a House subcommittee Tuesday to review the department’s proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year, DeVos said, “We had to make some difficult decisions.”
DeVos’s remarks came in response to questions from Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Wis.), who pressed her on the amount of kids the budget cut would impact.
“I don’t know the number of kids,” DeVos said before Pocan answered that 272,000 kids would be impacted.
“I think Special Olympics is an awesome organization, one that is well supported by the philanthropic sector as well,” DeVos said.

Of course, her stupid azz didn’t even know the number of kids that would be affected by the cuts. These folks have a pattern…they don’t seem to know the number of people affected by their cruelty. They can’t be bothered to know…that’s beneath them.

The cuts were difficult decisions?
There are no difficult decisions when it comes to the evil with this group. They can find any reason in the world to blow a hole in the budget deficit to give TRILLIONS to the top 1%, but, can’t find the money for the Special Olympics and cutting $51 million from Autism research?

Just months after President Donald Trump took office, the federal government signed a contract to buy hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of jet fuel from a university run by one of the president’s top political supporters.

The Pentagon’s energy procurement arm inked the contract, worth nearly $900,000, with a company called Freedom Aviation on May 9, 2017, and has purchased more than $400,000 in turbine fuel from the company since then. Freedom Aviation is wholly owned by Liberty University, a conservative school in Lynchburg, Virginia, led by high-profile Trump supporter Jerry Falwell Jr.

This morning, the New York Times reports that the Mueller report exceeds 300 pages.

    ……………………….

Three-hundred pages. 3-0-0. And we’re to believe that William Barr digested the totality of the 300 pages and found just what he revealed in his 4 page summary.

As the truism holds, the cover-up is always worse than the crime. With this revelation, we’re back to a feedback loop, where the crime is awful, and the cover-up makes it worse.

This isn’t the 700-page report Judge Napolitano was going on about on Fox News. But it’s plenty bad, bad enough to raise serious questions about what’s contained in it. As the story says, this is no bare-bones report of just the facts, ma’am. A report of this length demands that it be released, so that Congress and the American people can judge for themselves.

One also has to wonder how long Barr had Robert Mueller’s report in hand. Again, the idea that he was able to compile that letter in 36 hours beggars belief. And if Bar did have the report for longer, did he tip off his boss?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. Energy Secretary Rick Perry has approved six secret authorizations by companies to sell nuclear power technology and assistance to Saudi Arabia, according to a copy of a document seen by Reuters on Wednesday.

The Trump administration has quietly pursued a wider deal on sharing U.S. nuclear power technology with Saudi Arabia, which aims to build at least two nuclear power plants. Several countries including the United States, South Korea and Russia are in competition for that deal, and the winners are expected to be announced later this year by Saudi Arabia.

Perry’s approvals, known as Part 810 authorizations, allow companies to do preliminary work on nuclear power ahead of any deal but not ship equipment that would go into a plant, a source with knowledge of the agreements said on condition of anonymity. The approvals were first reported by the Daily Beast.

The Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) said in the document that the companies had requested that the Trump administration keep the approvals secret.

“In this case, each of the companies which received a specific authorization for (Saudi Arabia) have provided us written request that their authorization be withheld from public release,” the NNSA said in the document. In the past, the Energy Department made previous Part 810 authorizations available for the public to read at its headquarters.

A Department of Energy official said the requests contained proprietary information and that the authorizations went through multi-agency approval process.

Clare Bronfman, Seagram’s heiress, among 6 arrested in NXIVM case
    BY ANDREA PARK

Clare Bronfman, an heiress to the Seagram beverage company fortune, was among six people arrested Tuesday in connection with the group NXIVM, an alleged sex cult. The U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York announced on Tuesday that Bronfman — along with NXIVM founder Keith Raniere, former “Smallville” actress Allison Mack, Kathy Russell, Lauren Salzman and Nancy Salzman — have been indicted on charges of “racketeering conspiracy involving an array of crimes, including identity theft, extortion, forced labor, sex trafficking, money laundering, wire fraud and obstruction of justice.”

Bronfman was scheduled to be arraigned later Tuesday afternoon in Brooklyn. Though Raniere and Mack were charged in April with sex trafficking and forced labor conspiracy, the unsealing of the indictment on Tuesday marked the first time prosecutors had charged Bronfman, a member of NXIVM’s executive board; Russell, NXIVM’s former bookkeeper; Lauren Salzman, a member of NXIVM’s executive board and Nancy Salzman, the president of NXIVM.

Bronfman is being accused of identity theft for allegedly helping Raniere monitor the electronic communications of his perceived enemies and critics, and for allegedly helping Raniere charge expenses to his sexual partner’s credit cards after she died in 2016. The U.S. attorney’s office alleges that Bronfman helped an alien enter illegally into the U.S. She has been named before in court papers, with authorities saying she gave millions of dollars to the organization to cover expenses like private air travel costing $65,000 flight.

Raniere has called NXIVM a self-help group, but investigators allege it was a multi-level marketing scheme used as a ruse to enslave and traffic women for sex. In March, federal prosecutors said they captured Raniere making some women brand themselves with his initials. He denied the allegation. Mack has been accused of recruiting women into the group and exploiting them.

  22. rikyrah says:

Confronting racism is not about the needs and feelings of white people

I was leaving a corporate office building after a full day of leading workshops on how to talk about race thoughtfully and deliberately. The audience for each session had been similar to the dozens I had faced before. There was an overrepresentation of employees of color, an underrepresentation of white employees. The participants of color tended to make eye contact with me and nod – I even heard a few “Amens” – but were never the first to raise their hands with questions or comments. Meanwhile, there was always a white man eager to share his thoughts on race. In these sessions I typically rely on silent feedback from participants of color to make sure I am on the right track, while trying to moderate the loud centering of whiteness.

In the hallway an Asian American woman locked eyes with me and mouthed: “Thank you.” A black man squeezed my shoulder and muttered: “Girl, if you only knew.” A black woman stopped me, looked around cautiously to make sure no one was within earshot, and then said: “You spoke the truth. I wish I could have shared my story so you’d know how true. But this was not the place.”

This was not the place. Despite the care I take in these sessions to center people of color, to keep them safe, this still was not the place. Once again, what might have been a discussion about the real, quantifiable harm being done to people of color had been subsumed by a discussion about the feelings of white people, the expectations of white people, the needs of white people.

As I stood there, gazing off into the memory of hundreds of stifled conversations about race, I was brought to attention by a white woman. She was not nervously looking around to see who might be listening. She didn’t ask if I had time to talk, though I was standing at the door.

“Your session was really nice,” she started. “You said a lot of good things that will be useful to a lot of people.” She paused briefly: “But the thing is, nothing you talked about today is going to help me make more black friends.”

    @rikyrah:

I agree with Harris on truancy. It’s child neglect. We try everything here. Text messages. Tens of warnings. Neighbor to neighbor. They can’t miss so much school. It’s 15 days in Ohio when truancy prevention starts. 3 weeks of school. California is more generous- I think it’s 20. For one thing, it makes kids anxious and miserable because they’re always behind and if it goes on long enough it doesn’t matter how smart they are- they won’t catch up. We get this anti-vax like sentiment “my child, I make the decisions, so fuck off”. Okay, but you’re doing permanent damage, so don’t demand the school fix it when they get to 8th grade and are at a 4th grade level. They have to be there, or no one can teach them or help them. Not knowing what’s going on in school is humiliating for kids- half of them lie and don’t ask questions because they’re ashamed they’re behind and they think it’s their fault. It harms the whole class because everyone else has to back up and review too.

There are elaborate notice requirements. This isn’t a surprise to any of these parents. They get plenty of time to remedy it. Juvenile judges probably prodded her to do something. They’re absolutely insane about school attendance. It’s the first thing they look at now. Because they know how much damage it does.
