Just absolutely racist to the core.😠
Instead of helping Jackson escape its water crisis, Mississippi House Republicans are snatching judicial power from this majority-Black city. They "passed a bill to create a separate, unelected court system in the city of Jackson."https://t.co/EqqVtDwxEM

Understand that this would not be possible before the SCOTUS gutted Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act in 2013 in Shelby v Holder. Prior to Shelby, every voting change in the state of Mississippi had to be precleared by a federal authority to ensure Black voters were protected. https://t.co/9XxPiQkMHn

One neat trick of federalism, which regards the state as sovereign over its own affairs, is that it can be both a sword and shield against Black empowerment.
A shield against a national government looking out for everyone’s civil rights, and a sword against Black-led localities. https://t.co/HhTV9RIrzm

So yes, this is a remarkable development, but not unheard-of. It’s the reality of many majority-Black cities in the South, which can’t really enact policies that run afoul of predominantly white state legislatures. https://t.co/qpF0Tp4OVm

1. A Mississippi Representative described a session of the Mississippi House this week as "a Klan rally with people with suits on"
Here's why.

3. If the bill ultimately becomes law, a handful of white state officials would assume control over a significant portion of the city.

5. State Attorney General Lynn Fitch (R) "would appoint four prosecutors, a court clerk, and four public defenders for the new district."
The state Commissioner of Public Safety, Sean Tindell, "would oversee an expanded Capitol Police force."

7. Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba, who would lose control over portions of his city under the bill, said the proposal "reminds me of apartheid." Lumumba said the legislature was attempting to "colonize Jackson"https://t.co/AAabJWgN4t

9. According to the Clarion Ledger, officers from the Capitol Police “were involved in more than a dozen shootings last year.”
The police chief attributed the surge in officer-involved student to a community "that’s just not used to being proactively policed."

A white supermajority of the Mississippi House voted…to create a separate court system and an expanded police force within the city of Jackson—the Blackest city in America—that would be appointed completely by white state officials. https://t.co/h4kZ5IVSQO

Laboratories of Autocracy….shape democracy in ways the federal government can’t, run roughshod over local control.
This story out of Jackson is classic Jim Crow governance. https://t.co/tsJ7zyPVsj
— David Pepper (@DavidPepper) February 9, 2023
Mississippi is creating a separate all-white court system in the 83% black majority city of Jackson to be selected by the all white state government rather than elected by local citizens as in every other location and jurisdiction in the state.
Welcome back to Jim Crow America.

I have decided that I want an old-fashioned soul food dinner this weekend.
Fried Chicken
Mashed Potatoes
Collard Greens
Hot water cornbread
Macaroni and cheese.
Preparing myself mentally for what I need to do. LOL
I went to Early Vote today. From check-in to when I put my ballot in the scanner, I was finished in 8 minutes.
You will never be able to convince me that long lines are nothing but deliberate voter suppression. Had 5 contests on my ballot and three were uncontested.
The lines for the Georgia Senate runoff were deliberate voter suppression.

This horrific story about what is going on in Jackson, Mississippi, is not getting media coverage.
I only heard of it because of I follow Sherrilyn Ifill on Twitter.
This is outrageous.
Excellent post, Rikyrah.
Thanks, Liza.
It’s so absolutely outrageous. It just fills me full of rage.
There’s a reason why when my last close relative passed away that I vowed not to ever step foot in the State of Mississippi again.
I’ve kept that vow.
Good Morning, Everyone😊😊😊
