Open Thread | When the Red Meat for MAGA Smacks Up Against the FINANCIAL REALITIES of What Immigration Means To This Country

It was obvious that the entire ‘ go after the criminals’ was a bullshyt line from the get go.

No phucking way that MILLIONS OF ACTUAL CRIMINALS would go under the radar in the country WHO LOCKS UP MORE PEOPLE THAN ANYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD.

BY VIRTUE OF BEING UNDOCUMENTED, YOU WERE A CRIMINAL.

PERIOD.

AND THIS…

is what so many Black people understood without hesitation.

and, it honestly did confuse us as to why so many Latinos didn’t see this clear as day.

Chasing that White Adjancency, I guess.

So, this week, a big declaration that ICE shouldn’t be going after the farm workers, and service industry, and plant folks…

….why the turnaround to stop going after the service industry undocumented?

There are two groups in the GOP. And,the money men have spoken. They want their tax cuts…but, if they have no employees, they can make no money that won’t get taxed.

1) What happened here is some very politically powerful people made some phone calls. And they said something like this: “The 2026 midterms will be here soon. Stop raiding our farms and packing plants or we will wreck the GOP. And you know we can, too.”

2) “Hurting key industries”, yes. And pissing off people who have made a lot of political power dating back long before Trump was a spoiled child. Ronald Reagan knew it; he’d been governor of California. We’ll get to that. But let’s see more from the article next⬇️

3) So Trump does incompetent things without being aware of the consequences and is therefore stupid. Once his own stupidity became apparent (because powerful people made it perfectly clear to him) he had to flip flop. This proves his policies are incompetent and stupid. And⬇️

4) See that circled statement? So Trump’s officials have no common sense. Yes, well, we knew that. That’s why he chose them. They’re ignorant enough to carry out his ridiculous agenda, no matter how stupid that agenda obviously is. Because, you see, what others knew is⬇️

5) The great hero of the GOP, Ronald Reagan, did not support mass deportations. Quite the opposite. As I said, as governor of California, Reagan knew more about this than the up-and-coming knee-jerk imbeciles in the GOP. Let’s see more⬇️

6) Reagan also didn’t want a heavily militarized border and border wall like Trump has done. It WAS more politically advantageous for GOP to advocate for mass deportations in 2024 and 2025. But it isn’t anymore. It has created a massive public backlash. And also⬇️

7) You see, as governor of California, Reagan knew this. When one state controls most of the fruits and vegetables of the entire US, yes, that gives them a lot of political power as a state. But it gives the growers a lot of political power as well. Let’s see more⬇️

8) For a president to get into a political war with California is clearly insane and highlights Trump’s stupidity. You’ve got a state and its huge growers with a lot of economic and political power. I mean, come on, they control FOOD! And grocery prices. Let’s continue⬇️

9) Trump’s campaign platform promised to lower grocery prices. Obviously, you can’t do things to increase grocery prices without pissing off the people that voted for Trump. But, more importantly, you can’t piss off the growers of those groceries. Because⬇️

10) The growers and their cooperatives are very skilled at building coalitions and finding common ground with other groups. And they will certainly wreck the GOP in the 2026 midterms. Angry California govt, angry growers, and an angry public are a powerful coalition. And⬇️

11) Everyone except Trump, his cabinet, GOP Congress, and MAGA knows this. Well, Trump fucked around. And now he is finding out. The midterms are going to be a nightmare for GOP, because California agriculture knows they can’t trust Trump at his fickle, flip flop word. And⬇️

12) So, yes, the growers are going to fight these deportations using every political weapon they can muster. With that, and the widespread No Kings protests we saw yesterday, Trump is in very deep political trouble. And so is GOP Congress. 2026 is coming. https://t.co/Zghcg4vaYe

Remarkable: Vulnerable House Republicans are quietly urging Trump to refocus deportations away from noncriminal migrants and only target criminals.

With Trump admitted deportations hurt farmers, Rs know this is becoming a big problem for them. 1/

Six House Rs, many from vulnerable districts, sent a letter to ICE explicitly saying deporting non-criminals makes us less safe.

Strikingly, it undercuts Trump’s rationale for mass deportations and reveals deep political vulnerability on the issue. 2/

House Rs are urging a focus only on criminals AT THE EXACT MOMENT that Stephen Miller is ordering ICE to scour Home Depot parking lots for noncriminals to pad the numbers. Miller is *choosing* to divert resources away from dangerous criminals. 3/

Vulnerable House Republicans would not need to distance themselves from Trump’s mass deportations unless they were becoming a political problem. With this letter, House Rs revealed that MAGA propaganda smearing all deportees as criminals is failing. 4/

In MAGA worldview, elites deliberately use immigrants to keep wages low/deprive Americans of jobs, consigning them to idleness/social stagnation. (See JD Vance to @DouthatNYT.)

Trump’s admission undercuts MAGA at a deep level, giving Dems an opening. 5/

Trump has handed Dems a big weapon against his deportations. House Republicans in swing territory have openly demonstrated their vulnerability on this point. So what’s the hold-up here, Dems? Time for a reset.
