Video | Quvenzhane Wallis, Gabby Douglas & the First Daughters: Attacks On Our Young, Gifted & Black

Quvenzhane Wallis is receiving the same treatment that Gabriele Douglas received after winning her Olympic Gold medal for the best ALL AROUND gymnast for team USA. And who can forget the NRA’s ugly Ad questioning why the First daughters deserve Secret Service protection.

Racist Attacks on the Obama Children: New Lows for the Racist Right? (UPDATED)

And how about this AWFUL joke Seth MacFarlane told last night: Quvenzhane Wallis won’t be “too old for Clooney” for another sixteen years – Seth MacFarlane #fair #Oscars2013  I don’t give a shit if MacFarlane insulted every ethnic group, gender or class. We’re not going to tolerate verbal or physical attacks on our children.

Quvenzhane to AP report:  “My name is not Annie. It’s Quvenzhane.

9-year-old Quvenzhané Wallis, correcting the AP Reporter who said she was “just going to call her Annie.  Naw, Son; you take the time to call Quvenzhane by her BIRTH name.

And then there’s this STRAIGHT UP foolishness from Chrissy Teigen, singer John Legend’s squeeze:

Teigen’s a plain old coward, who has no claim to fame, other than being on the arms of Legend, picking on a 9 year old child.

Let’s recap:

  • Quvenzhane tells AP reporter her name’s not “Annie.”
  • The Onion calls Quvenzhane a “cunt.”
  • Seth MacFarlane links  Quvenzhane to dating George Clooney
  • Chrissy Teigen, an unknown want-to-be-noticed girl friend of Singer John Legend imagines folks thinks she’s supposed to like Quvenzhane and calls her “cocky.”

WOW!  Mind-numbing to read how evolved adults have become, isn’t it?

We’re seeing a pattern developing here with our fine, smart, and talented YOUNG black girls, especially after they’ve achieved HIGH levels of success.  Folks seem to think they can behave badly, and disrepect them.

Quvenzhane Wallis on the Red Carpet

The Onion has issued the following apology:

Dear Readers,

On behalf of The Onion, I offer my personal apology to Quvenzhané Wallis and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the tweet that was circulated last night during the Oscars. It was crude and offensive—not to mention inconsistent with The Onion’s commitment to parody and satire, however biting.

No person should be subjected to such a senseless, humorless comment masquerading as satire.

The tweet was taken down within an hour of publication. We have instituted new and tighter Twitter procedures to ensure that this kind of mistake does not occur again.

In addition, we are taking immediate steps to discipline those individuals responsible.

Miss Wallis, you are young and talented and deserve better. All of us at The Onion are deeply sorry.

Steve Hannah

This is what you do, folks; you take RESPONSIBILITY for behaving badly.

Onion commenter: “I’m pretty sure the joke was supposed to be making fun of the way people talk about celebrities, not Quvenzhane Wallis, so this apology just makes me depressed. The smartest writers in america were forced to apologize to the idiots of america who didn’t even get it. A huge chunk of the people reacting on Twitter were black people imagining a racist attack on themselves. The whole reaction was just pathetic.”

I’m sure this commenter is: 1. does not have a daughter & 2. is a white hipster racist.

Your thoughts?

So what’s the message, folks? These fools want to belittle, diminish and thwart our young Black girls’ confidence. They’re afraid of their success, because you know they can’t have any of them thinking they can be another First Lady, like Michelle Obama. Get ready to be called out and smacked down for the stupid, because Our girls will NOT be denied the respect, goodwill, and love they deserve. We love you Quvenzhané, Gabby Malia, Sasha, and ALL our black daughters, sisters, mothers, aunties, and grandmothers.

Quvenzhané may not have won an Oscar last night, but she certainly is worth her weight in goal, in 3 Chics book. And I”m sure, just like her character Hushpuppy in the movie “Beasts of the Southern Wild, we will like Quenzhane, STEP UP, STARE DOWN the BEASTS, and say; “Look, go take care of your own. I gotta take care of mine.”

  1. Donella says:

It is not imagination. Young Black Girls in North America are media targets because mainstream society are desperate for Young Black Girls to “learn their place” at an early age lest more of them become Quvenzhane Wallis, Sasha Obama, Malia Obama, Willow Smith, Gabrielle Douglas, Venus Williams, Serena Williams–or heaven forbid–First Lady Michelle Obama.

Sasha and Malia Obama USED to be criticized like grown women until the President stepped to the media and said, “Not MY children, you don’t.” You don’t hear much sniping and complaining about those two very well-behaved girls any more.

Venus and Serena Williams, if not for their father (who the media HATED for not letting them “get at” his girls), would have been chewed up in the sports media meat grinder. Some of us recall when the girls got booed and called racist names by North Americans when they played doubles or singles overseas.

Amanda Steinberg became the target of her own Twitter attack by ignorant, illiterates and racists who expressed repulsion at the thought of a Black female scifi hero.

Gabrielle Douglas heard side commentary from her own teammates about the width of her nose and got called a “flying squirrel.”

I’ve also seen nasty commentary against Willow Smith for being the privileged child of wealthy, powerful actors in Hollywood.

Little Black Girls are TARGETED. It is not your/our imagination. Mainstream society wants Little Black Girls to know their place is not first, second, third, or even fourth. They want to do enough psychological damage to convince Little Black Girls that their place is last, that they mean less, that they are worth less. That no one will defend them when White males and/or females of privilege attack.

Thank God Quvenzhane Wallis has the self-confidence, self-worth, and self-knowledge, the bravery and the class to look grown rich White male idiots of privilege with media power and dominance straight in the face and let them know that SHE KNOWS WHO SHE IS and who she is not. These patriarchal racists–writers at The Onion, writers at SNL, writers at The Academy Awards–attempted their very best to marginalize Wallis with C-Bomb, Little Q, Miss Q, “Annie” and she did not allow them to call her out of her name or maintain any social or cultural power over her. Now that’s a child well-raised.

By the way, if Hollywood can say Schwartzenegger, then they can say Quvenzhane or continue to reveal themselves as the racist illiterates and social misfits they likely are anyway.

And I did notice that none of the blue-eyed blonde female child actors–Ashely and Elizabeth Olson, Abigail Breslin, Dakota Fanning–received the level of contempt, loathing, disrespect, and “satire” thrown Quvenzhane’s way. Certainly, Jennifer Lawrence did not. Harvey Weinstein would have fallen upon The Onion like a ton of bricks if she’d been C-Bombed either before or after receiving her Oscar. Lawrence’s magic night and Lawrence herself remained apparently undisturbed by the disrespect shown her fellow nominee.

I truly wonder whether any of these women recognize their White privilege granted by their White male protectors, but I doubt it. Everyone seems color-blinded by all the “satire.”

The only two Black females at the Academy Awards with any camera time–First Lady Michelle Obama and Quvenzhane Wallis–received vituperative commentary for daring to show their brown faces and daring to breathe the rare air of that White-dominated world.

Hollywood and mainstream media have revealed themselves time and again as purveyors of racial hatred and misogyny.

I love the way not only First Lady Michelle Obama, but also Quvenzhane Wallis refuse to bow down. These two wonderful role models know and understand that their place is wherever they want it to be and the White patriarchy in North America need to get with that program.

An Open Letter to The Onion, Regarding Their C-Word Tweet About 9-Year-Old Quvenzhane Wallis

    Warning: contains strong language.

    Pia Glenn

    Dear @TheOnion:

I find it appalling to police comedy. I find it appalling to list one’s resumé credits to make a point. But I also find it appalling to hide behind the Great Wall of Satire in half-assed defense of the denigration of a child, so I say all bets are off. Let’s get appalling up in this bitch.

As Condoleezza Rice in “You’re Welcome, America: A Final Night with George W. Bush,” I simulated sex on top of a desk and rubbed my ass on Will Ferrell’s leg 8 times a week on a Broadway stage. Don’t tell me about satire. Check my YouTube channel and get back to me on rough humor and hypersensitivity. Peruse my own time in the tabloids and rethink explaining having to take some jabs being “in the public eye.” I wish you would tell me to calm down.

I love comedy and I practice satire daily and I need you to hear why that stupid fucking “joke” you tweeted about Quvenzhané Wallis last night has me and many in my community furious. Not a little pissed, not miffed, mind you, but coming for blood.

As one who chooses my battles, allow me to inform you that we are circulating your direct contact info and that of your advertisers. I know better than to whine in the wind and call that an attack. This is but a Dear John letter in case you’re wondering why I’m leaving you.

Personally, I can’t believe I’m here again. Typing out words to appear on this page to dissect humor. I’d rather yank out my own eyeball and get fucked in the eye socket by a syphilitic dick. But, as in the case of comedian Lisa Lampanelli’s tweet last week, I like to go to the source, and in this case, I don’t know who the fuck you are. Some nameless, faceless tool put some words together, I’m guessing that at least one other person had to lay eyes on it in approval (?), and with one keystroke Oscar night was shat upon.

And about that Oscar night: it was already hanging by a bloody fingertip over the precipice of tastelessness, but I’ll not hold you responsible for the sins of others, only your own egregious one.

Twitter happens in real time, yes? You and your team of Hallowed Satirists must have been too busy fine-tuning the Craft to notice that young Miss Wallis had already had to sit through vulgar “comedy” about the possibility of George Clooney screwing her soon. And yes, I know that if you break it down, that is a joke about George Clooney that mentioned her, as opposed to one where she is the only punchline and do you know how I know this? Because I know humor and I get satire. I am certainly not the arbiter of Funny, but I have been fortunate to work with and know personally some of the greats in the game and I often get personal texts and e-mails from them asking my opinion on whether something goes “too far”. Do you know why? Because it turns out there actually are limits.

I defended Daniel Tosh, for pity’s sake! Of course I say “yes” to free speech. It is what allows me to presently point out that I am so disgusted. I’m fine with coarse language and I am an adult so call me a cunt all day. Go for it. But also be prepared for the spectrum of possible responses. Freedom of speech is not freedom from consequence.

I wish Quvenzhané Wallis’ family did not have to have been even remotely concerned with metaphorically covering that child’s eyes and ears during her trip to the Academy Awards as a motherfucking nominee. Your “public figure” argument? She’s 9 years old. Her own Twitter bio says “Since she is 9, account is run by her parents.” Does that not speak to the inappropriateness of tweeting such a “joke” about her with her name when she herself can’t even respond?

That’s your cue to tell me how little it matters because, due to the very youth that I keep pointing out, the jokes probably go right over her head anyway. Because that opens the door for me to say that I bet I could string some words together in the service of my humor that might not be fully comprehended by someone with cognitive disabilities and still make fun of them and then you’d feel like a soggy, flaccid dick, because you are.

And anyone saying it “could’ve” happened to Dakota Fanning or any other child star, well isn’t that adorable and convenient! Martin Luther King, Jr. “could’ve” survived being shot. Also, there “could’ve” been more people of color and females represented at the Oscars to begin with. Perhaps then this wouldn’t have seemed like such a targeted sniper shot.

Hey, I know a hilarious game about “could’ve”! What if the tweet stayed the same but was about Suri Cruise? Her father has sued entire publishing firms for what I would call Ordinary Libel Against a Public Figure, how many ways do you think he and his team would have shut down your entire operation by now? You “could’ve” been licking toilets clean at Suri’s daycare center this morning! Isn’t it fun to hypothesize about what “could’ve” happened if a different power hierarchy were in place

      • leutisha says:

I caught her performance in “You’re Welcome, America”! She looked so much like Condi it was scary! And she was hella good with the part she played as Bush’s sidepiece (that was satire and it was hella funny!)

Safe to say, Ms. Glenn KNOWS what’s satire and what’s a phucking attack on a nine year old child. They never would have done this shyt to Dakota or Elle Fanning, and Suri Cruise? Tom would be the OWNER of the Onion by now, and as for Seth McFarlane, it’s safe to say that bastard won’t be appearing on another Academy Award unless his damned cartoon wins one. Low-life mutha.

I think YT is realizing WE know SATIRE and we KNOW when our children are being ATTACKED and WE won’t stand for it up in this BITCH. The End.

Quvenzhane Wallis and Michelle Obama the subject of cruel tweets Oscar night: Jarvis DeBerry

By Jarvis DeBerry, | The Times-Picayune
    on February 25, 2013 at 4:30 PM, updated February 25, 2013 at 4:36 PM

Dear Naomi, last week, when your mother and I left you in the care of a sweet older couple we know, the grandfatherly gentleman looked at your mother and me and decided you were too cute to have come from either of us. We both laughed, and I said, “You’re right.” You are cute, Naomi, and though I know a 5-month-old doesn’t yet understand words, when I tell you “You’re so cute” over and over again, you expose all your gums, reveal your dimples and cover your eyes with your knuckles as if to say, “Oh, Daddy, stop it!”

But I won’t stop. There are many things I’m required to do for you: clothe you, feed you, change you, provide you shelter. But it seems no less important for me as your dad to tell you you’re beautiful. It’s not hard to do. In fact, I tell you first and foremost because the truth compels me. But there’s another reason beyond the obvious reality. You have entered a world that won’t be as kind to you as the couple that sat with you last week, and though Daddy intends to shield you from as many mean people as he can, some of them will get to you. They won’t just neglect to say you’re pretty, they’ll insist that you are ugly. They’ll tell you that something on you – your lips, your hips, your thighs, your bottom – is too big and that you ought to be ashamed of yourself. It’s my job to reach you before they reach you, to help you build up a sense of worth that can’t be easily toppled.

I’ve met black women, Naomi, beautiful women, who haven’t managed to deflect those insults but have absorbed them and accepted them as true. You’ll be different, won’t you, sweetie? Tell me that when your body, your face, your hair are nitpicked and derided that you will channel Mississippi poet Sinclair O. Lewis who wrote “Anyone Who Rejects Me Gotta Be Crazy.”

There are crazy people out there, Naomi. I write this letter the day after Michelle Obama, wife of the president of the United States, made an appearance on the Oscars. In a night that features movie stars, Mrs. Obama, in a silver dress by designer Naaem Khan, was as glamorous as any of the women who walked the red carpet. Few women are as well toned and shapely as she is. Even so, you could go to Twitter and see her referred to as Moochelle. She was called fatty and likened to a gorilla. Some of the language was so offensive, so shockingly and blatantly sexist and racist, that I won’t repeat it for you. You’ll be introduced to those words soon enough, but right now you’re a little girl.

    • Ametia says:

The racists crybabies are having a fucking meltdown over FLOTUS & the Oscars. Her appearance was one of the redeeming moments from that sorry ass show last night.

  5. vitaminlover says:

Quvenzhane is a most dignified young lady. I liked what I saw in her last night at the Oscars. She was very mature when she didn’t win. Her skin is gorgeous!

  6. The Thing About Being A Little Black Girl In the World: For Quvenzhané Wallis

    Quvenzhané Wallis..

The thing about being a little black girl in the world is that even when you are the youngest person ever to be nominated for an Academy Award, many people will use the occasion not to hold you up for all of the amazing things you obviously are, but to tear you down for the ways you don’t look like them, the ways your name isn’t their kind of right, the ways you don’t remind them of themselves, the ways you are not blonde or blue-eyed, as if those things could possibly matter when set against the otherwordly talent and beauty and brilliance you possess.

The thing about being a little black girl in the world is that you come into it already expected to be less than you almost certainly are, the genius and radiant darkness you possess already set up to be overlooked, dismissed or erased by almost everyone you will ever meet.

The thing about being a little black girl in the world is that even when you are everything, some people will want you to be nothing. They will look at you through the nothing-colored glasses they will put on every time you enter a room. And the bigness of you, the outstandingness, the giftedness, will be invisible to them.

The thing about being a little black girl in the world who is already, at nine years old, confident enough to demand that lazy, disrespectful reporters call you by your name, is that most people will not understand the amount of comfort in one’s own skin it takes to do that, will not be able to grasp the sheer fierceness of it, the boldness, the certainty, the love for yourself, and will not be blown away at seeing you do it, though they should be.

  7. jamalA says:

At least it is a real apology, when you acknowledge “cruelty masquerading as satire” that’s revealing. I think there’s so many other folks who have this perverted, mythical image of our kids as less than… whatever? It fuuk’s them up when A doesn’t equal B, like you guys say so much, their heads just explode “POOF!”

Obviously, a bright child like Gabby and the Obama girls, she states in one of the interviews linked by the one above when asked if she doesn’t win a Oscar. “Well, that’s OK I’m not going to let it stop me.” As for John Legend C’mon Chrissy, Chrissy… Seriously?

    • leutisha says:

John Legend is probably worried that he’s going to lose his progressive creds by dating a snowflake who’s also a RACIST. He should be thinking: “If this chick thinks this way about a 9 year old African-American child, what the hell is she going to think about ME?”

If she’s a snowflake, y’all know the brothas CAN’T put them in CHECK – they’ll get thrown in JAIL for even thinking about it.

      • Donella says:

I hope John Legend does not plan to allow a woman like this to be the mother of his BLACK child.

      • Ametia says:

THIS. Because if Johny hasn’t figured this whole thing out yet, any child he has by another woman, black, red, white or green, the child will be VIEWED as BLACK in America.

    • Ametia says:

Seriously, I want to slap that bitch sideways to Sunday.

Folks like to scream about their frist amendment rights, blah, blah, blah, without thinking there are consequences for free speech. You noticed the pattern of attacks on this child last night, ASTOUNDING! This is a time in this child’s life where she should have been honored and praised for her accomplishments.

Sad; really when the adults are stuck on stupid. They need to grow up and get a life.

  8. gigoid says:

I would have hit a Like, but, no button here, so… good post, Ametia….. I’m always sad to see posts about things that are so obvious, yet so ignored in the mainstream that posts like this are needed… Well presented, without undue rancor, and thorough; a very telling indictment of those who hold hatred in their hearts… Well done…

  9. rikyrah says:

they think somebody’s playing with them and that we’re ok with them attacking our children.

    • Ametia says:

And where’s the link for Ben Jealous, name-dropping the first daughters. He ain’t slick.

    • leutisha says:

We have NEVER BEEN OKAY with attacks on OUR CHILDREN.

Evil Sons of Bitches ———> yeah, I said it!

As for disciplining those who tweeted – how about joining other Black people on the UNEMPLOYMENT LINE? That’s the most effective discipline there is, because if you’re forced to look for work and you put yourself in that situation, you’ll never FORGET what a douche you were.

As for the commentator trying to defend that bullshyt? Have him/her meet me in Southeast DC. There’s a couple of boys they need to meet, to teach them you do NOT attack our children.

Ben Jealous is still hiding out from the fallout over Shirley Sherrod – that should let everyonee know how much the NAACP devotes itself to protecting Black women and girls.

  10. Let this Chic be clear. There is nothing funny in a vile filthy joke envisioning a 9 year old girl’s genitalia. Get it through your fking head! Only a lowlife child abusing mentally ill deranged pedophile mofo would think otherwise.

    • leutisha says:

This Chic is also CLEAR – the moron who sent that tweet is A PEDOPHILE. No self-respecting adult sends out such tweets, but then again, just when I think YT can’t sink to NEW LOWS, they always come through with going there. They NEVER DISAPPOINT/snark

  11. Ametia says:

We’ve got your back, Quvenzhane, Gabby, Malia & Sasha, and all the little black girls!
