On the Death of Sandra Bland and Our Vulnerable Bodies
    JULY 24, 2015

I AM tired of writing about slain black people, particularly when those responsible are police officers, the very people obligated to serve and protect them. I am exhausted. I experience this specific exhaustion with alarming frequency. I am all too aware that I have the luxury of such exhaustion.

One of the greatest lies perpetrated on our culture today is the notion that dash cameras on police cruisers and body cameras on police officers are tools of justice. Video evidence, no matter the source, can document injustice, but rarely does this incontrovertible evidence keep black people safe or prevent future injustices.

Sandra Bland, 28 years old, was pulled over earlier this month in Waller County, Tex., by a state trooper, Brian T. Encinia. She was pulled over for a routine traffic stop. She shouldn’t have been pulled over but she was driving while black, and the reality is that black women and men are pulled over every day for this infraction brought about by the color of their skin.

      from the story:

As a black woman, I feel this tragedy through the marrow of my bones. We all should, regardless of the identities we inhabit.

this is why I have been unable to watch the video of the traffic stop.

    • Liza says:

The worst of what happened to Sandra Bland was not on the dash cam video, but what was captured and shown to the public is really incriminating against the cop. It absolutely defies reason how anyone could watch this and not be able to imagine the terror of being in the front seat of your car after just being assaulted by a cop and watching him completely lose control of himself while he points his taser at you and tells you he’ll light you up. And his crazy screaming and use of excessive force and the false arrest and her hands cuffed behind the back and then the take down and the beating?

This is law enforcement? I think not. This is a predator, this is a disturbed man who went into a near homicidal rage because a black woman did not cower in his presence. This is the kind of “man” who beats girlfriends and/or wives and even children and dogs if he has any. He’s a swinging dick with a badge and he is a very dangerous man. He reminds me of George Zimmerman, this is the kind of cop George Zimmerman would have been if he had succeeded in becoming a cop.

We haven’t heard much about his background. But we will, eventually.

    • Liza says:

What I really think is that a bad cop should be an aberration, certainly not as common as Brian Encinia and Dan Pantaleo and Johannes Mehserle and it goes on forever. Every time a PD hires a person who should not be a cop, someone out there is going to get maimed or killed. The videos just mean that now people in Alaska can see what is happening in Florida that the cops never wanted them to see.

Amazingly, there is still so much denial that these cops are bad, and until that is rectified, the citizens are not going to be able to take back the police departments that they pay for with their taxes.

Black folks have always gotten the worst of this, that has been true for hundreds of years. Somehow, this has to end. No one has the right to destroy your body or take your life when you are not a threat and that includes cops.

This traffic stop that ended in the death of an innocent woman should have the entire nation outraged, but apparently it doesn’t. If I were trapped in my car and that cop was at my open door with his taser pointed at me and wearing a gun and having totally lost control of himself, it would have scared the living hell out of me. I would have feared for my life and I’m not even sure what I would have done. I do not understand how anyone could watch this cop video and see it any differently.

Larry Wilmore on Sandra Bland: Black people have to act like the Dowager Countess to avoid police brutality
    Travis Gettys
    24 Jul 2015 at 07:46 ET

Larry Wilmore tackled the baffling death of Sandra Bland — who Texas police say hung herself in jail three days after she was arrested during a traffic stop for a minor violation.

The host of Comedy Central’s “Nightly Show” said the state trooper continually escalated the situation, first by sarcastically asking if she was finished complaining after he asked whether she was irritated, and then asking her to put out the cigarette she was lawfully smoking in her car.

‘Are you done’ isn’t how you finish something — ‘are you done’ is how you start something,” Wilmore said.

He then played a lengthy portion of the dashcam video, which shows the state trooper become increasingly aggressive after Bland refuses to put out thee cigarette and then asks why she is being ordered out of her vehicle.

“Here’s what I saw: I saw a woman who was very irritated and probably having a bad day, most likely because she was pulled over, smoking a cigarette to calm down, complying with everything the officer asked for,” Wilmore said. “Then it got confusing because he told her to put out her cigarette but then offered to light her up by pointing a Taser at her head. To me and most reasonable people, it’s clear that this officer was wrong.”

The cops are killing us and getting away with it. All under the cover of the shield in the bright light of day. How the fukk???!!!!!

I heard that there were four women in the cell across from Sandra’s. I hope the attorney for Sandra’s family gets their names and interviews them.

Were Sandra’s jail phone calls recorded?

Where is the EMS report from the scene of the traffic stop?

Was there a recording of the cruiser where Sandra was placed of her conversation with the EMS people at the traffic stop scene?

Where are the police reports of the other officers on the scene?

Saw one one of them interviewed on t.v earlier today..

      Wasn’t completely feeling her story..

The problem with such witnesses is that they are easily compromised…They are easy targets that can be controlled by the police and D.A – to either serve as alibis in exchange for *their* freedom, or persecuted further if they choose not to play along..

    https://youtu.be/CaW09Ymr2BA&rel=0

    Starting at timestamp 8:51

Trooper ENCINIA: You seem very irritated.

SANDRA (calmly) : I am…I was getting out of your way…so I move over…So yeah, I am a little irritated, but that doesn’t stop you from giving me a ticket though.

Trooper ENCINIA : Are you done?

SANDRA(again calmly): You asked me what was wrong, and I told you. So now I’m ( ?)

Trooper ENCINIA: Do you mind putting out your cigarette, please? (note tone of the word “please.”

SANDRA: I’m in my car (I don’t have to put out my cigarette)

Trooper ENCINIA: You can step on out now.

SANDRA (still in a regular calm, but assertive voice) I don’t have to step out of my car.

Timestamp 9:23 -Trooper ENCINIA: Step out of the car. (puts his clipboard on her hood and opens the door.)

This traffic stop video clearly shows that Sandra knew her rights and that Trooper Encinia escalated the encounter because he had NO self-controlled professionalism and was upset by Sandra’s response to his comment: “You seem very irritated.”

He basically invited Sandra to tell him why she was irritated. He did NOT like her answer of “I am…I was getting out of your way…so I move over…So yeah, I am a little irritated, but that doesn’t stop you from giving me a ticket though.”

Instead of discussing with Sandra her reason for feeling irritated, he responded only with Are you done?”

Now let me tell you what I think his intention was at this VERY point of the exchange:

Based on the fact later in the traffic stop video where Trooper Encinia told Sandra to take off her glasses just before he slammed her head to the ground, I think that his asking her to put out her cigarette signals that he intended to get her out of her car right after he said “Are you done?” simply because she explained why she was irritated after as she said “You asked me what was wrong, and I told you.”

    • yahtzeebutterfly says:

When Trooper Encinia was speeding up behind her car, I thought it was polite of Sandra to move into the right lane to give him an opportunity to speed on by.

You know, I think Trooper Encinia’s speeding up and getting on her tail might have been a ploy. Perhaps, he hoped she would either speed up to his speed (and he could ticket her for that) or he hoped that she would quickly move to the right lane forgetting to signal “right.”

      Tweets from Lisa Bloom:

Cop who arrested #SandraBland seemed to revel in sadism. “I will light you up” while pointing taser, “good” when she said she had epilepsy.

It is not a crime to be annoyed when a police officer pulls you over. #SandraBland

What is the law requiring a motorist to put out a cigarette when stopped for failing to signal? #SandraBland

Black people like #SandraBland hassled, falsely arrested and killed by police all over the U.S. Not isolated incidents but systemic racism.

And if Sandra Bland had a cell phone and left a message for her mom, Ms. Geneva Read-Veal, WHERE IS THER CELL PHONE?

    • yahtzeebutterfly says:

I hope her cellphone video of the traffic stop still exists because it would have recorded Trooper Encinia’s facial expressions.

Sandra knew the Encinia was in the wrong, and she was looking forward to taking him to court.

  14. Ametia says:

    I HAVE QUESTIONS:

How the HELL was Sandra Bland ALLOWED POT in her jail cell?

Did they DRUG HER, before they faked her suicide?

    • sunshine616 says:

If they expect us to believe everything they are saying, they are at least admitting the fact that their PD, Sheriff’s office, jails are incompetent as fuck and at the very least are responsible for her death because they are all shitty at their jobs and allowed a “suicidal” “agitated” isolated inmate to ingest a drug and commit suicide in their jail. Not that i believe that at all.No matter what, the LE in this country is irreparably effed and our lives are the cost.
