It’s all connected. The desire to Whitewash – literally, American History and erase the contributions of Black Americans from the building of this country.
I have often said that the reason Black people are so hated is because our very existence undermines and undercuts the fantasy narrative that far too many White people want to engage in when they speak about America.
American exceptionalism is the FACT that this country’s economy and the economic advantage that this country has had was built on over 245+ years of American Chattel Slavery.
And, another near 100 years of American Apartheid- Jim Crow.
I use to wonder why, when studying American History, the period of Reconstruction was given such a short shrift.
I used to think it was because it was such a short span of time.
As I got older, I realized it was because that was the last time that America would have lived up to its actual creed, but, didn’t.
The failure of Reconstruction was another blow to those who want to live in American Exceptionalism Delusion.
The failure of Reconstruction would point out the blatant White Supremacy that undergirds so much of this country.
To tell the truth of what freed slaves did for themselves. What they were able to build up, with barely any assistance from the country that had them in bondage. What an almost completely illiterate population was able to do in such a short amount of time.
I remember watching a program with Ta-Nehisi Coates, when he spoke of where the title of his book:
We Were Eight Years In Power: An American Tragedy
I thought it was referring to the election of Donald Trump after Barack Obama.
Mr. Coates is a student of HISTORY, and always wanted us to understand that what’s new is old…
“We were eight years in power” was the lament of Reconstruction-era Black politicians as the American experiment in multiracial democracy ended with the return of white supremacist rule in the South.
Reconstruction’s failure is America’s failure to live up to it’s creed.
To every era of Black Advancement, there has always been a White Backlash. Period.
