From President Biden:
Tonight, Americans once again voted to protect their fundamental freedoms – and democracy won.
In Ohio, voters protected access to reproductive health in their state constitution. Ohioans and voters across the country rejected attempts by MAGA Republican elected officials to impose extreme abortion bans that put the health and lives of women in jeopardy, force women to travel hundreds of miles for care, and threaten to criminalize doctors and nurses for providing the health care that their patients need and that they are trained to provide. This extreme and dangerous agenda is out-of-step with the vast majority of Americans.
My Administration will continue to protect access to reproductive health care and call on Congress to restore the protections of Roe v. Wade in federal law once and for all.

Republicans keep saying they don’t want a shutdown, and it would indeed be a terrible move for new Speaker Mike Johnson. But there’s a growing likelihood of a Republican shutdown anyway — because Johnson and his brain trust lack the legislative and political acumen to prevent it.

It’s good to see some of these Democratic governors doing so well. I was listening to Beshear’s victory speech and thinking, “Move over Gavin Newsome.”
Katie Hobbs is doing a great job here in Arizona, she’s very well liked and getting stuff done.
Most Californians don’t hold Newsom in high regard.. he’s the pits..
Just another lucky beneficiary of party Poobahs clearing the field ..stifling & preemptively strong-arming out all competition.. and again and again, leaving voters no choice..
In the end, frustrated voters are stuck with either the party Poobahs’ horrid handpicked candidate.. or (most often) the even worse republican option..
Case in point: the recent recall special election..
It all came down to Gavin – and the even more loathsome Larry Elder..
In an entire state with some of the best universities, the beating heart of tech and innovation hubs, and filled with supposedly ‘conscious’, educated – and endlessly raucous and ‘righteous’ self-styled ‘activists’ …those were the ‘top’ options.. LOL..
And, of course, given the nightmare alternative, Newsom once again, sailed through..
Price tag to California taxpayers by the way, for said recall election: $200 million..
P.S:
For those who keep pointing to previous, continuous elective gigs ‘won’ and held, as somehow ‘proof’ that a politician is ‘great’, deserving, ‘qualified/experienced’ – or somehow not subpar – or actually earned the spot – or accomplished anything substantial in previous positions – beyond waiting around, scheming, schmoozing party Poobahs and mega donors, cultivating target demographics entirely for the purpose of exploiting them to self-boost/self-advance.. endlessly preening and self-promoting – with the assist of expensive PR consultants, staged photo-ops and contrived ‘news making theater’ – all amplified by hired influencers …and all while doing precious little in any of the positions – and nothing that’ll hamper plans for next leap up the elective political ladder..
Nope.. Entirely unearned..and undeserved..
This is how they snag and keep those political gigs.. they fail up.. field cleared for them by party Poobahs each time.. with far better candidates shut down.. kept out.. warned that they’ll be blacklisted if they don’t go along..
And so, situations like what’s now playing out re: Diane Feinstein’s seat replacement, happens..
Adam Schiff – who’d worked his b*tt off for 16 years in congress as he waited patiently for the rare opening for a senate seat ..and a natural fit actually for Barbara Boxer’s Senate seat when she retired (same Southern California constituency – as opposed to Diane Feinstein’s Northern California) was elbowed out when state party Poobahs immediately forcibly cleared the field for the undeserving Harris.. threatening anyone who dared entertain any thoughts of entering the race.. and blacklisting/damaging the few that tried..
Barbara Lee, who won a special election in 1998 to succeed her then-boss, Ron Dellums – who retired after 27 years in congress.. played along.. obsequiously endorsing Harris – hoping that when Diane Feinstein’s (Northern California) senate seat came open, would be a shoo-in for it after all her years in congress..
And now that Diane Feinstein’s seat finally came open.. after Newsom appointed Alex Padilla (first Hispanic) to Barbara Boxer’s old seat vacated by Harris.. there’s an ongoing tug of war.. with Schiff, Lee and newbie, Katie Porter, all fighting for it..
In the end, one will win, but they’ll all be damaged ..the two losers, all the more..
The party will also lose 2 of its reliable representatives..
Worse, the long-term damage beyond the 2 casualties, that’ll be left in its wake after votes are counted..
Damage to reputation, credibility, etc..
And the long memories, hostilities, resentment, outright hate between supporters, ‘adjacents’ and their various intra party factions – and hired/pay-to-play ‘influencers’.. will not be quickly papered over, and will continue to rear its ugly head in perpetuity, in party dynamics..
In the end, voters’ noses hurt from holding them over and over again, to vote the resultant clear-the-field party poobahs’ crappy pick ..over the horrendous republican alternative..
And at some point, folks will simply tire of playing this game..
