Trump removes nearly 30 career diplomats from ambassadorial positions

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is recalling nearly 30 career diplomats from ambassadorial and other senior embassy posts as it moves to reshape the U.S. diplomatic posture abroad with personnel deemed fully supportive of President Donald Trump’s “America First” priorities.

The chiefs of mission in at least 29 countries were informed last week that their tenures would end in January, according to two State Department officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal personnel moves.

All of them had taken up their posts in the Biden administration but had survived an initial purge in the early months of Trump’s second term that targeted mainly political appointees. That changed on Wednesday when they began to receive notices from officials in Washington about their imminent departures.

Ambassadors serve at the pleasure of the president although they typically remain at their posts for three to four years. Those affected by the shake-up are not losing their foreign service jobs but will be returning to Washington for other assignments should they wish to take them, the officials said.

………………………..

Africa is the continent most affected by the removals, with ambassadors from 13 countries being removed: Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Madagascar, Mauritius, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Somalia and Uganda.

Second is Asia, with ambassadorial changes coming to six countries: Fiji, Laos, the Marshall Islands, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines and Vietnam affected.

Four countries in Europe (Armenia, Macedonia, Montenegro and Slovakia) are affected; as are two each in the Middle East (Algeria and Egypt); South and Central Asia (Nepal and Sri Lanka); and the Western Hemisphere (Guatemala and Suriname).

Open Thread | Think On This……

I am not surprised. Not in the least. I think nothing less of this bunch. But, it still doesn’t make it any less infuriating.

Jesus Freakin Congress
@TheJFreakinC
🚨BREAKING: ICE accidentally published a government watch list of immigration lawyers… because nothing says “healthy democracy” like federal agencies quietly cataloging the attorneys who challenge them.

Yes, really.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement posted what appears to be a covert roster of immigration attorneys on its own website. No announcement. No explanation. Just buried there until attorney Arlene Amarante stumbled across it while using the site and realized her own name was on the list. Casual. Normal. Totally fine.

The list has since been taken down, which is usually what happens when something is completely legitimate and not deeply alarming.

Immigration advocacy group Al Otro Lado has now filed a FOIA request demanding answers. Who created this list? Why did it exist? And why was ICE cataloging lawyers at all?

Then the situation got even more disturbing.

Amarante noticed a clear pattern, telling WGNO that a large number of the attorneys on the list were people of color. At that point, this stops being bureaucratic incompetence and starts looking like targeting.

Her question cuts to the heart of it. Why does this list exist? Whether it was an “innocent incursion” or something intentional and nefarious, we need to know. Especially when this administration keeps pushing the idea that helping immigrants is itself the harm, and this list seems to reflect that mindset.

And let’s be honest, this didn’t come out of nowhere.

In March 2025, the White House issued a memo titled “Preventing Abuses of the Legal System and the Federal Court,” openly attacking immigration lawyers, accusing them of “unscrupulous” behavior, and directing the Attorney General to take action against lawyers and firms that cross the Trump administration.

So when ICE gets caught maintaining a quiet database of immigration attorneys, the context matters.

Al Otro Lado didn’t sugarcoat it, warning that the list raises “grave concerns of political targeting and professional intimidation” while the administration escalates its attacks on immigrant advocates.

Staff attorney Andrew Fels said what everyone is thinking. There is no obvious legitimate reason for ICE to be compiling a covert roster of immigration lawyers. The group is now demanding ICE publicly explain the list’s purpose and release the policies governing who was included.

Legal director Cassandra Lopez issued a warning that should make every lawyer uneasy. History may be repeating itself. Lawyers are appearing on government watch lists simply for doing their jobs, defending asylum seekers, and holding the government accountable in court.

Since the start of Trump’s second term, lawyers haven’t been treated as officers of the court. They’ve been treated as enemies. This watch list looks like the next step, where adversarial legal representation itself becomes suspicious behavior.

That’s not law enforcement. That’s authoritarianism.

And when the government starts monitoring the lawyers tasked with challenging it, the rule of law isn’t being protected… it’s being dismantled.

Weekend Open Thread

Good Morning. I hope that you are enjoying this weekend, fully vaccinated and boosted, with family and friends. That new booster shot has been approved..be sure to get it. Call and see if your pharmacy has it.

Order your free COVID Tests., if you still can.

We lost two greats in the entertainment industry this week:
Actor/Director Rob Reiner
Soap Legend Tony Geary

Back when there were only 3 main channels and most homes had one television, so you had to watch what your parents watched, I first saw Rob Reiner as ‘Meathead’ on All In The Family.

Then, he left All In The Family and transitioned into directing movies.
Some people say that he had the best five film run of any director:

Rob Reiner’s five best films

This Is Spın̈al Tap (1984)
It is extraordinarily rare for a director to change the entire direction of comedy with their first feature, but that’s exactly what Rob Reiner did with this legendary mockumentary. Following a disastrous American tour by a witless British rock group, This Is Spın̈al Tap manages to nail so many music industry cliches so perfectly that the film quickly became a mainstay of tour buses around the world. Reiner himself got in on the act, playing the blowhard documentary director Marty Di Bergi. The fact that something entirely improvised could create so many deathless lines is even more astounding. This year a sequel, The End Continues, was released. What fitting bookends to a brilliant career.

When Harry Met Sally (1989)
Reiner’s run between 1984 and 1992 is the sort of thing most directors can only dream of. He spent those years dabbling in multiple genres, and producing a classic each and every time. When Harry Met Sally is a classic example. It was just Reiner’s second romcom, but it instantly became the defining romcom of all time. Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan play characters who spend years circling one another, unsure of whether a man and a woman can ever truly be friends. The performances are tremendous, the outfits are great, Nora Ephron’s script is perfect, and the emotions never feel anything but completely real. One of the best films ever made, but maybe not even Reiner’s best film.

The Princess Bride (1987)
Here is where Reiner’s approach to film-making started to become clear. This was a man less interested in flashy visuals or personal style, and more interested in finding the best writers on Earth and wringing every last drop of potential out of them. In the case of The Princess Bride, that writer was William Goldman, who crafted a kaleidoscopic fantasy world full of heroism, revenge, romance and magic. Every character stands out. Every line sings. And Reiner gives the material exactly the treatment it deserves, knowing precisely when to hold back and when to gun for the laugh. The Princess Bride is nearly 40 years old, and it remains one of the most impressive family films of all time.

Misery (1990)
Some might have picked Stand by Me to round out a list like this, or maybe The American President. Maybe even, since his film was the thing that brought the term into common usage, The Bucket List. However, you could argue that no film captured Reiner’s absolute mastery of tone like 1990’s Misery. On the surface it’s a horror film, about a writer who finds himself trapped in the home of an obsessive fan. But it also manages to be screamingly funny, clearly the work of writers (Stephen King and William Goldman) who enjoy a complicated relationship with the consumers of their work. Tense, gruesome and containing one of Hollywood’s all-time great red herrings, this one might just be Reiner’s masterpiece.

A Few Good Men (1992)
And then Reiner left comedy altogether, to make Aaron Sorkin’s tight, muscular legal drama. Written on napkins during Sorkin’s shifts as a barman, A Few Good Men was first a play that ran for almost 500 performances. But Reiner and Sorkin (and an uncredited William Goldman) spent months reworking the script for the movie adaptation. The effort shows. The story of a callow lawyer working the case of some extrajudicial military deaths, the film quickly becomes a treatise on the battle between duty and morality. The “I want the truth” showdown between Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson remains the highest point of both actors’ careers.

cinesthetic.
@TheCinesthetic
Rob Reiner’s 80s run is absurd: 5 classics in a row—Stand By Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Misery, A Few Good Men. Arguably one of the greatest stretches in cinema history. And that’s not even counting Spinal Tap two years earlier.

Centrist Republicans revolt, signing a petition to force a vote on Obamacare funding
The enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies are still expected to expire at the end of this year, however, raising insurance premiums for millions of people.

Rebelling against their leaders, four House Republicans on Wednesday signed onto a “discharge petition,” giving Democrats the 218 signatures needed to force a vote on a three-year extension of the Obamacare subsidies that are set to expire for millions of Americans on Dec. 31.

If the enhanced premium tax credits expire, as is expected, insurance costs are projected to double, on average, for about 22 million Americans who get their coverage through Obamacare.

The discharge petition, led by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., has all 214 Democrats on board.

The four Republicans who signed on Wednesday morning and pushed it to 218 were Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., Rob Bresnahan, R-Pa., and Ryan Mackenzie, R-Pa.

All four represent competitive districts that could make or break the GOP’s narrow House majority in November. Democrats have been slamming each of them as complicit in the impending lapse of the funding, which first passed in 2021 under President Joe Biden in a bid to cap premiums for “benchmark” plans at 8.5% of income.

Fitzpatrick said his hand was forced by the refusal of Republican leadership to “compromise” after he attempted “for months” to offer ideas and amendments…

The ACA funding bill is not expected to come to the floor before the Dec. 31 deadline, meaning the subsidies will lapse for an estimated 22 million people who get their health care insurance through the Affordable Care Act marketplace.

Under House rules, seven legislative days need to lapse before a bill, discharged by such a petition, comes to the floor. The House, however, is only scheduled to be in session until Friday, before lawmakers head home for a two-week holiday recess.

The House is set to return to Washington on Jan. 6, meaning the vote on the three-year extension will likely be held in the second week of that month — unless Johnson attempts to expedite it to the floor.

And if it does pass the House, it still faces hurdles in the Senate, where Republicans rejected the three-year funding extension on the floor just last week. Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., has slammed the Covid-era ACA subsidies and said he favors a broader overhaul, not just an extension of those funds…

Wednesday’s successful discharge petition marks yet another example of Speaker Johnson — presiding over a razor-thin 220-213 majority — losing control over what happens on the House floor…

Remember…

A safe Republican District is now R+13

R+13

With that being the case, the field has widened for the Democrats, and certain Republicans understand that.

And, for those on the left, who want to disparage Jeffries for ‘giving a life preserver to the Republicans’…
Man…FOH!

If the choice is to give the GOP the chance to vote for their own self-preservation AS THEY VOTE TO PRESERVE HEALTHCARE INSURANCE ACCESS FOR 22 MILLION PEOPLE…

OR
‘stick it to the GOP’

Well, that’s why we’re Democrats.
Cause, I will go for TWENTY TWO MILLION PEOPLE KEEPING THEIR ACCESS TO THEIR HEALTH INSURANCE, EVERYDAY.
ALL DAY.

And, if my empathy for my fellow 22 million American makes me weak in your eyes..
Oh well.

Open Thread | Never Ever Forget…He Inherited THE BEST ECONOMY IN THE WORLD ON JANUARY 20, 2025 FROM PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN

Jared Ryan Sears
@JaredRyanSears
This is what experts said about the US economy in 2024:

World Bank: “U.S. growth is exceptional.” The World Bank said this as it increased its forecast for the global economy, citing the strength of the US economy.

IMF: “On the performance of the U.S. economy, it has been remarkably strong. Activity and employment have exceeded expectations, and the disinflation process has proven less costly than most feared. The U.S. is the only G-20 economy whose GDP level now exceeds the pre-Pandemic level. This is good for the U.S., and it is good for the global economy.”

The Economist: called the US economy the “envy of the world” and said, “America’s economy is bigger and better than ever.”

So when someone says the current administration inherited a bad economy, know that they ruined it.

Open Thread | Another Viewpoint of the Worst Court Since Taney

Another good one by Josh Marshall

Democratic Voters and the Corrupt Republican SCOTUS Six
12.10.25 | 12:30 pm

I’ve noted many times the central role of Supreme Court reform to any civic democratic future. If you’re a regular reader, you know my arguments. So I won’t recapitulate them here. I’ve also noted how very few Democratic officials seem at all ready for this and a huge amount of work is required to get them here. Luckily there’s time: The first chance to do anything like this is 2029. But there’s another, even more critical, underlying need. A lot of the Democratic public still sees the idea as disconcerting or extreme. And we shouldn’t run away from this perception. Because it is extreme. It is a remedy only justified and really necessitated by a basically unprecedented development in American history which is robbing the public of its right to self-government. (The question is whether there is any precedent is complicated. There are arguably two similar instances in American history. But we can return to that later.) The point is that there is a lot of work to do. Inherently resistant Democratic politicians certainly aren’t going to be brought along if a substantial number of their own voters, perhaps a majority of them, are spooked by the idea.

So this requires a substantial campaign of public education — activist/political groups dedicated specifically and focusedly to the issue, ones that are political activist in nature, ones that draw from the elite legal world. An entire language of explanation is required.

Obviously people have all sorts of ideas and it’s the ultimate hand wave to say … well, now all we need is a public education campaign to convince the public what I want is a good idea. That’s all! Simple. Just this one neat trick. But while this captures some of the challenge, there are concrete and non-aspirational reasons to believe this is different. I don’t think Democrats need any convincing that something has gone catastrophically wrong in the country. I think that perception actually goes way beyond partisan Democrats. Many people seem to now get — with the totality of the last decade and 2025 — that only extreme actions have any hope of putting the genie back in the bottle or even getting the genie bottle adjacent. The example of the Biden presidency actually adds to the weight. People get that just electing a Democratic president in itself isn’t enough. I think there are various aspects of the Biden presidency that will look better with the passage of time. But from the vantage point of 2025, it certainly has the look of a course of antibiotics you started and then stopped after just a day or two, which led to the infection coming back in a more virulent form. (I actually read about some recent studies that throws into question that old “finish the course” mantra. But again, let’s not get distracted!)

It’s been 8 years since trump said he’d replace it.

It’s been 5 years since trump told Fox News he’ll be “signing a health-care plan within two weeks”

It’s been ONE year since trump made the ridiculous statement he had “concepts of a plan.”

It’s been 11 months since trump has been in office.

ACA subsidies are about to expire, causing healthcare premiums to spike for MILLIONS of Americans.

WHY DON’T REPUBLICANS APPROVE A DAMN EXTENSION FOR ACA SUBSIDIES UNTIL THEY HAVE A LEGITIMATE PLAN FOR HEALTHCARE???

That is why we are supposed to use a clear-error standard of review—why we are supposed to uphold the District Court’s decision that race-based line-drawing occurred (even if we would have ruled differently) so long as it is plausible. Without so much as a word about that standard, this Court today announces that Texas may run next year’s elections with a map the District Court found to have violated all our oft-repeated strictures about the use of race in districting. Today’s order disrespects the work of a District Court that did everything one could ask to carry out its charge—that put aside every consideration except getting the issue before it right. And today’s order disserves the millions of Texans whom the District Court found were assigned to their new districts based on their race. Because this Court’s precedents and our Constitution demand better, I respectfully dissent.”
