(CBS News) SANFORD, Fla. – George Zimmerman is set to come face to face with the parents of Trayvon Martin for the first time Friday at a court hearing that could result in his release on bond.
Zimmerman has been behind bars since his arrest nine days ago, charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of the unarmed 17-year-old. He has claimed self-defense in the deadly Feb. 26 encounter. Martin’s parents, Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton, believe their son was murdered in cold blood.
On Friday, Mark O’Mara, Zimmerman’s attorney, will ask a Florida judge to free his client on bond pending the trial, though he has expressed concerns about Zimmerman’s safety.
“I don’t think he needs to or should stay in jail while this case is pending. I want him out and safe, and I’m not sure where safe is going to be yet.”

Rodney King, whose beating by police in 1992 sparked the LA riots, criticized Friday the law at the heart of the contested Trayvon Martin shooting, as he recalled his own struggles.
Speaking a week ahead of the 20th anniversary of the Los Angeles race riots which left more than 50 people dead, King said he sympathized with Martin’s family but declined to speculate on the role of race in the case.
“I feel sorry for them, that was just a baby, it’s just a baby,” the African American told CNN, when asked about the Martin case, which has triggered protests and a national debate about racial profiling and the law.

Judge sets $150,000 bail for Zimmerman
A judge says George Zimmerman can be released on $150,000 bail as he awaits trial for the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.
Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester set several conditions Friday for Mr. Zimmerman’s release. He cannot have any firearms, drink alcohol or use drugs and must observe a curfew. The judge says details need to be worked out between Mr. Zimmerman’s attorney and law enforcement, and that Mr. Zimmerman will not be released Friday.

Zimmerman was charged with second-degree murder after the case sparked a heated, national debate over racial profiling and saw thousands of protesters demand Zimmerman’s arrest.
Martin’s family contends Zimmerman racially profiled their son, who was walking back from a convenience store in Sanford, Florida, when he was killed on February 26. Zimmerman was charged on April 11.
Zimmerman, who is Hispanic, maintains he acted in self-defense. His family says he did not profile Martin.
The case has also stirred debate over Floridas controversial Stand Your Ground law, which allows people to use deadly force when they feel a reasonable threat of death or serious injury.
