USA Media: Racism & Terrorism |Open Thread

Let’s not let the flag take down as a sign of ending racism in this country. I don’t give a flying fuck about that flag. It’s not going to stop white supremacy or the systemic racism that runs rampant in health system, ECONOMIC disenfranchisement, employment, law enforcement=SYG Laws& a SCOTU that is shredding any Civil Rights gains we’ve achieved from decades ago, entertainment, education, and any other sector of life that affects PEOPLES of COLOR.

I’m ANGRY, and that’s just the way it is, right now folks.

Change, TRUE CHANGE involves a change in CONSCIOUSNESS. And this would include the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA’S MEDIA.

It’s very clear that Black people do not control the media in America. Truthfully, if it weren’t for the INTERNET, social media…Twitter, blogging, etc. We’d be up shit’s creek without a paddle, when it comes to disseminating any SEMBLANCE of TRUTH.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: It’s Media Terrorism to Deny Charleston Was About Race

The real threat here isn’t that this is an indicator of an surge in right-wing racist attacks, it’s that we allow this incident to be used as a political football by those who hope to leverage it to their gain, which is a more subtle form of terrorism: media terrorism.

First Black President of the United States should APOLOGIZE for US SLAVERY?

This is what CNN airs to let us know how the majority of white man in this country thinks & feels about nonwhite folks. We already know, and to try and even open his mouth to tell President Obama to let America off the hook by apologizing for the HATE, BIGOTRY, RACISM, RAPE, MURDERING, PILLAGING OF WHITE FOLKS, now that is TERRORISM, an insult, assault on our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual bodies, our very BEING. Day after day we are being terrorized and assaulted in this country. If the white man doesn’t shoot & massacre us in the 21st century, they will use other means to get at us, chip away at us, until we DIE.

We must not let the MONIED MEDIA continue with their war on POC & the rest of America’s citizens who bear witness and speak out against this UGLINESS.

South Carolina pol says Charleston shooting victims ‘waited their turn to be shot’

State Rep. William Chumley: These people sit in there, waited their turn to be shot… that’s sad. But somebody in there with the means of self defense could have stopped this. And we’d have had less funerals than we’re having.

CNN Interviewer Drew Griffin: You’re turning this into a gun debate? If those nine families asked you to take down that flag, would you do it?

Chumley: You said “guns,” why didn’t somebody, why didn’t somebody just do something? I mean, uh, you’ve got one skinny person shootin’ a gun, you know I mean, we need to take, and do what we can…

CNN: I want to make sure I understand what you’re telling me… are you asking that these people should have tackled him, these women should have fought him… that…

Chumley: I don’t know what, I don’t know what the answer was. But I know it’s really horrible for nine people to be shot and I understand that he reloaded his gun during the process. [smiles] That’s, that’s upsetting, very upsetting.

CNN: Those nine families, and every black person in South Carolina, and all of the people, the white people who are against that flag believe it shouldn’t be on the state grounds, you are saying it should stay because your constituents want it to?

Chumley: It stays there until the people of South Carolina say it should come down. Thank you so much. Appreciate it.

“That’s sad…that somebody in there with the means of self-defense could have stopped this. And we’d have less funerals than we’re having,” Chumley continued.

THIS RIGHT HERE:

“Why didn’t somebody just do something?” he asked. “You got one skinny person shooting a gun. We need to do what we can.”

One white male racist, murderer & terrorist. Just one shooting a gun? It’s never the White man’s fault for murdering crimes, is it William Chumley? Despicable PIECE OF SHIT.

And yes, we’re reposting this despicable segment from MSNBC’s Meet the Press, because this is another example of MEDIA TERRORSIM. This segment was aired 4 days after a white man opens fire in Mother of Emanuel AME Church and massacred 9 black church-going people. 4 fucking days. And I really do not give a DAMN about folks saying this is a game the media is playing and they are manipulative, BLAH, BLAH, FUCKING BLAH! It is a DANGEROUS GAME. We and our families live this shit every single Godamned day, at work, schools, stores, buses, trains, planes, sidewalks, every fucking where.

So ya’ll do you, and 3 Chics will do who and what we’re about.

About a month ago, Dylann Roof’s family was concerned. The once-quiet, bright boy from a middle-class South Carolina family was espousing troubling racist views.
“He apparently told people that he was involved in groups, racist groups,” said a woman who said she was the mother of Mr. Roof’s former stepmother. “He was kind and sweet and polite to my daughter. He didn’t even want her to know what kind of things he was doing. She told him she didn’t approve.”
Mr. Roof, 21 years old, was the son of a contractor, did well in school in early years and loved animals, his relative said. But he stopped going to high school and was adrift, she said

The Power of False Narratives

The absence of any determined – or well-funded – effort to counter the Right’s false narratives has allowed this fabricated history to become real for millions of Americans. And, on Wednesday, it meant that even modest attempts to impose some sanity on the national gun madness, including the slaughter of children, was stopped in the U.S. Senate.

  2. Hate Leader Who Inspired Roof Called For Race War In Runup To Church Shooting

    Earl-Holt

    http://www.vocativ.com/usa/race/hate-leader-who-inspired-roof-called-for-race-war-in-runup-to-shooting/

Comments apparently made by the president of the Council of Conservative Citizens talk about how it’s “every Patriot’s duty” to arm for the “upcoming race war”

Authorities say Dylann Roof has confessed to allegedly killing nine African-Americans in a South Carolina church last week, and law enforcement has confirmed that he was inspired by the leader of a white supremacist group called the Council of Conservative Citizens. The leader, Earl Holt III, the group’s president, has said in the past that his organization doesn’t advocate violence. Following the shooting, the Council even issued a statement saying “it’s unclear what caused Roof to go on the shooting spree.”

But there are more than 450 comments on various websites from the past month under what appear to be Holt’s handle that not only call for violence, but specifically violence against African-Americans. In a comment on the CCC’s website posted just three days before the killing spree in Charleston, a commenter with the handle “cofccprez2015″ wrote: “Old guys like me should dress in a disheveled manner, pretend to be intoxicated, hang-out in ‘the hood,’ and bring along a large-caliber handgun (with backup!) and help mitigate violent black crime at its source.”

The Southern Poverty Law Center, which has studied Holt’s online presence, says that it is certain that Holt was the author because “there are hundreds of comments” that have the “same voice, same obsessions. He also gives biographical detail at points.” There are another 4,350 comments, going back months, made under the handle “Earl P. Holt III” that bear many of the same hallmarks, the SPLC says. Our own analysis of the comments attributed to Holt leads to the same conclusion.

Ann Coulter “Accuses” Nikki Haley of Being an Ignorant Immigrant

Ann Coulter, who knows almost nothing about anything, let alone American history, and has written a new book to prove it, is greatly vexed by South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley for wanting the Confederate battle flag to come down.

Having no real argument to make, Coulter, in true conservative fashion, settles for an ad hominem attack (that is, an attack on Haley personally rather than her argument), saying Haley is an immigrant and therefore ignorant:

Last week, pure evil visited Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C. It came in the form of a deranged, racist gunman who attended Bible study among the welcoming members of the church before he pulled out a weapon and cruelly cut them down.

By the end of this week, nine innocent souls will have been laid to rest in a string of funerals celebrating the lives that they lived. But while many congregants have already forgiven the perpetrator of this carnage and prayed for him, I am just not there.

I find Jim Webb to be prototypical white guy so upset that Obama is President but tries unsucessfully numerous times to mask it. He was simmering when Obama won in 2008 and probably thought it was a fluke until 2012. And then he though if he could do it, I can do it too. But opened his mouth and everyone said nope, you are just mediocre. He is simmering mad along with the his west virginia pal and military bodies. They are like we will hold out for Hillary even if she appears to be love “those’ people, at least they get our people with our way of life and whistle. Then Hill is like but the “clinton democrats” thing did not work back in 2013. But Jim is like well you could split the white vote with the republicans and “those” people will vote for you either way. We need to feel important again in the democratic party like it used to be even though most us vote GOP. It made us feel special, you know the “white working class voters.”

Then y’all came for his flag and he done lost it. He probably got cousins and uncles in CCC or hell he got a flag in his home. He like i can’t take this, I lost it all but i want my flag.

Feingold, jim etc have the prototypical white male ego when they think they are better than black folk as a whole. These men could not run during their election year because it would mean reliancy in someway of the black man. It was too much for their ego; the way they were raised and their ideology.

All of them are all coming out of the woods to compete in a mediocre field now because their ego was bruised as well as this white inferiority that they push on everyone.

In short I equate all of them including the GOP candidate- Glen Greenwald, WHPC as inferior men with bruised ego. All their lives they were told they were better than those people BUT IT WAS ALL A LIE – AN ILLUSION.

An objective assessment results in the realization that alot of politicians in US politics for the past couple of decades have been mediocre propelled by myths created by the Press. Kudos to President Obama to accomplishing all he has despite the treason; hate; no support from his so called political party; racism; corrupt press and personal attacks

BOSTON—Dzhokhar Tsarnaev apologized to the victims of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing on Wednesday, just before he was sentenced to death for his role in the deadly attacks.

“Now I am sorry for the lives that I’ve taken and the suffering that I’ve caused, and the damage I’ve done—irreparable damage,” Mr. Tsarnaev said in a brief statement.

He apologized to his victims, saying that he had learned many of their names and faces and had prayed for them. Referring to the bombing, he said, “I’m guilty of it. If there is any lingering doubt of that, let there be no more.”

Mr. Tsarnaev asked Allah to pray for healing for those affected and to “have mercy upon me, my brother and my family.”

The 21-year-old spoke in federal court, where earlier several victims and family members spoke about the toll the attack took on their lives and loved ones.

    Does Racism Require Intent?

For months conservatives refused to accept that police officers killing unarmed Black men was a sign of the racism that still exists in our police departments and criminal justice system. Even when the Department of Justice produced it’s report finding that the Ferguson Police Department engaged in a pattern and practice of racial discrimination, the denial persisted.

But for most (certainly not all) conservatives, it became too difficult to deny that racism is what motivated Dylann Roof. Initially they tried, but the facts became overwhelming. And it has been his embrace of what the Confederate flag symbolizes that has led so many to call for its removal.

The reason so many people had to accept that Roof’s actions were racist is that he made his intentions clear. If his statement at the scene of the shooting about how his African American victims were “raping our women and taking over our country” weren’t enough, his published manifesto made it irrefutable.

But when the Ferguson Police Department records show that African Americans account for 93% of arrests but make up only 67% of the population, there is no statement of intent that officers target Black people. It is the impact of their actions that demonstrates racial discrimination.

This is actually what President Obama was referring in his conversation with Marc Maron when his use of the “n-word” evoked such a huge reaction.

    Never blame the victims
    06/24/15 12:53 PM—UPDATED 06/24/15 01:00 PM
    By Steve Benen
South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) announced on Monday that she wants to see the Confederate battle flag taken down from the state capitol grounds. But under state law, the decision isn’t entirely hers to make – the governor will need the cooperation of the Republican-run state legislature.

With this in mind, as we noted on Monday, the Post and Courier newspaper is maintaining a head-count, updated in real time, listing state lawmakers’ position on the issue. As of a few minutes ago, support for removing the flag appeared to have the necessary votes in the state Senate, and they’re nearing the threshold in the state House.

But it’s not unanimous. The Huffington Post flagged one South Carolina lawmaker who’s inclined to vote “no.”
South Carolina state Rep. Bill Chumley (R) told CNN he thinks the nine victims of a shooting in a historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina, “waited their turn to be shot.”

Chumley was defending the use of the Confederate flag at the South Carolina capitol grounds when he made the remarks, blaming “misuse and miseducation of the flag” for the debate over its use. Chumley argued access to guns, not the Confederate flag, is what South Carolina lawmakers should be focusing on in the aftermath of the massacre.
“These people sat in there and waited their turn to be shot,” Chumley said. “That’s sad. Somebody in there with a means of self-defense could’ve stopped this.”

TPM’s report added that Chumley, in the same interview, tried to explain that he’s representing his constituents who want the Confederate symbol to remain in place. “We’re focusing on the wrong thing here,” he said. “We need to be focusing on the nine families that are left and see that this doesn’t happen again.”

And if he’d just stopped there, his comments would have gone without notice. But the GOP lawmaker just kept going – suggesting the victims of a mass murder bear some responsibility for the death toll.

Haley says she won’t violate law by temporarily removing Confederate flag

    Cynthia Roldan
    Jun 24 2015 9:44 am Jun 24 12:38 pm

COLUMBIA — The Confederate battle flag will continue to fly on the
Statehouse grounds today, despite efforts to remove it temporarily.

Gov. Nikki Haley said she still wants to see the flag removed
permanently, but doesn’t want to break the law by claiming it’s down for
repairs, said Haley’s spokeswoman Chaney Adams.

“Based on the 2000 law, (Haley) does not have the authority to remove
the flag herself, today or any day, and rather than violate that law, she will continue to work to change it,” Adams said.

Haley does not have the authority to remove the flag from the grounds.
A two-thirds vote by both chambers of the General Assembly is needed to tamper with any of the monuments that are part of the Statehouse
complex. That includes the battle flag, which flies as part of the
Confederate Soldier Monument that commemorates those who died during the Civil War.

House Democrats have argued that state law allows for the replacement of flags “at appropriate intervals as many be necessary due to wear.” Tyler Jones, spokesman for state House Democrats, said Wednesday that provision would have allowed Haley to remove the flag during the viewing for Sen. Clementa Pinckney, which takes place between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Meet the anonymous online sleuths who dug up Dylann Roof’s deranged manifesto
    By Caitlin Dewey June 22

Law enforcement officials have confirmed that a racist manifesto credited to Dylann Roof did, in fact, belong to the 21-year-old accused of killing nine African Americans in a Charleston church last week.

But had it not been for two enterprising Twitter sleuths, Roof’s Web site — which could derail any future attempts to plead insanity — may never have come to light.

“I will not stand for another news cycle of ‘poor little boy gone wrong because of mental illness/dysfunctional family/drug use etc’ while victims like Trayvon Martin and Eric Garner are painted as thugs and criminals,” said Emma Quangel, one of the two pseudonymous sleuths who found Roof’s site. “The media and the police didn’t seem to find the manifesto. So when HK suggested a way, I bit.”

HK is Henry Krinkle, the other Twitter investigator, and his “way” was actually pretty rudimentary. Whenever someone registers a Web site, they’re required to fill out several fields of personal information, including their name, phone number and address. That information gets dumped into a database that, in many cases, is publicly searchable; which means — unless you pay for a service that masks your identity — anyone can see who registered a Web site, and which Web sites have been registered by a particular individual.

Krinkle clicked over to DomainTools.com, a site that lets you search this domain database. He searched sites registered under Dylann Roof’s name.

One historical record came up: i.e., a site that was registered in Roof’s name, before it was anonymized or taken down. Domain Tools charged $49 for the full record. And while Krinkle wasn’t immediately interested in paying, Quangel was.

The site that resulted, of course, has since been confirmed by law enforcement as legitimate. It contained a lengthy, racist manifesto that characterized African Americans as “violent” and impulsive, and that also characterized Hispanic and Jewish Americans as “enemies” of whites. It also contains numerous photos of Roof posing with a Confederate flag, burning the American one, and pointing a handgun at the camera.

“I have read the manifesto and understand the concerns of critics who think it should not be given a great deal of attention,” Krinkle told the Post by email. “However, I believe it is important to display the real motivations behind Roof’s act of mass murder so that white supremacy can be exposed for the toxic and dehumanizing ideology that it is.”

Meanwhile, Quangel tweeted: “I hope this ruins yr ‘not guilty by reason of insanity’ defense, Dylann!”

By all accounts, the Web site could have that effect: When Roof’s case goes to trial, said Jane Moriarty, a law professor at Duquesne University and the author of a book on the insanity defense, it’s likely that prosecutors will offer his manifesto as evidence that he was “racist and hateful, but not mentally ill.”

“These writings will likely make it difficult to prove insanity,” Moriarty added — though she cautioned that it’s difficult to draw many conclusions at this point, given how little is known about Roof and his history.

For me and many Southerners, the flag celebrates my heritage and regional pride. One of my ancestors, Benjamin Thomas, was a black Confederate cook, and I do not want to turn my back on his service to the South. So I hang the flag in honor of his hard work and dedication to South Carolina during the Civil War.

My Confederate flag isn’t racist; after all, I am black. I’m also an American who strongly believes in the constitutional right to free speech. I fought back against the university’s demand that I take my flag down simply because others view it as a symbol of racism. I fought back against the racist interpretation of the flag and I won.

So O’RiledUp says that the flag represents the “bravery” of the confederate soldiers during the civil war.

Will the son of Strom Thurmond had this to say about that:

      Sen. Paul Thurmond:

And, for the life of me, I will never understand how ANYONE could fight a civil war based in part on the desire to continue the practice of slavery.

Think about it for just a second. Our ancestors were fighting to continue to keep human beings as slaves and continue the unimaginable acts that occur when someone is held against their will.

I am not proud of this heritage. These practices were inhumane. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.

Thank you, Ametia, for creating this page to point out the inexcusable horrid responses that Rep. Chumley gave to the newsman. I am incensed that Chumley laid blame on the victims who were viciously murdered by Roof because they did not use some means to defend themselves. I am incensed that Chumley is against the removal of the confederate flag.

Well, listen at this link with video, on what the Sen. Paul Thurmond, son of Strom Thurmond had to say in SC state senate. My transcription is below the link.

    Sen. Paul Thurmond:

I think the time is right in the and the ground is fertile for us to make progress as a state and to come together and remove the confederate battle flag from prominent statue outside the statehouse and put it in the museum.

It is time to acknowledge our past, atone for our sins and work towards a better future. That future must be built on symbols of peace, love and unity. That future cannot be built on symbols of war, hate, and divisiveness.

    Commentary by Lawrence O’Donnel:

Senator Thurmond did not do the mandatory political bow to the confederate flag that other conservative politicians always do. He did not echo Gov. Nikki Haley yesterday saying that the confederate flag was a symbol of respect, integrity and duty.

Instead, Senator Thurmond used all the credibility that the Thurmond name has with Southern conservatives and all the credibility of his ancestors who served in the confederate army to discredit everything that flag stands for.

    Sen. Paul Thurmond:

Some say that the confederate battle flag represents the South’s heritage and ancestry. Let’s talk about the heritage aspect.

My family has been in South Carolina for many generations. I was told that my great grandfather was with General Lee when he surrendered at Appomattox. I am aware of my heritage, but my appreciation for the things that my heirs accomplished to make my life better doesn’t mean that I must believe that they always made the right decisions.

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.

    Commentary by Lawrence O’Donnell:

When sons follow their fathers into an occupations, sometimes they find themselves wondering why they are there. Is there any larger purpose to this other than following in a parent’s footsteps. Today, Senator Paul Thurmond of Charleston, SC found that purpose

    Sen. Paul Thurmond:

I have often wondered what is my purpose here in the Senate. I’ve asked God to guide me and strengthen me, and I have prayed that I will be able to make a difference for this state. I have prayed that I will leave this place better for the future generations.

I am proud to take a stand and no longer be silent. I am proud to be on the right side of history regarding the removal of this symbol of racism and bigotry from the Statehouse.

I do not forgive you for sweeping your history under the rug as we watch the skeletons rattle out of the closet and bring us all to our knees in prayer. I do not forgive you because Black America is not safe- even in prayer.

We are the history that we’ve read about in the history books. We are that history because America claims forgiveness without, first, offering the apology.
